I want to move data but the PC doesn't

    I have an external disk (K) with a lot of data on it and i want to copy it to another disk on the PC (D) so that i have access to the data but can protect it by removing the external disk.

    For some reason my PC will not allow me to do this.

    I am running Windows 7 ultimate 64bit on an i7 rig.

    Any suggestions please.

    I have had to post the pic this way because manage attachments is not working.

    I get this a lot with a WD120 Gig (portable) in my case it refers to a loss of connection. But this is weird as its actually showing in My computer. Can you access it in Disk Management ?? Will it show in RUN command ?? K: Does it happen when hitched to another com. Another thing is why is it not at the end of the HD list as normally Internal HD's list goes before external. I assume your ''M'' drive is internal along with the others.

    Hi Bill

    Try changing the driver letter of D: as that message can crop up when a USB pen or HDD is mapped to the same drive letter, at times they pick their own when plugged in if not set manually and this can conflict with the already named drive.

    I tend to name any USB pen or HDD from Z: downwards and any fixed drive from C: upwards.

    No M is a partition on the same external drive.

    That did the job David, i changer the drive K to USB Z and it is happily copying away.

    Hi Bill

    Phew, glad it was that simple thing of driver letters, they can be a pita at times, which is why I manually allocate them that way USB from <Z and Fixed from >C
