This means no more VMs needed for us folks that are on a stock Q6600 or better.:cool One does have to get a passkey from Stanford and fold for 10WUs before the bonus points kick in, GPU WUs apparently don't count.:( I'll be trying this when my current VM SMP finishes. Here's Stanford's longish blurb on it, but you guys on i7's should really check this out!;) Deadlines are short though, 2 days from what I can gather. Suited for 24/7 folders.

I know ya'll can find 'The Rest of the Story' around.;) I'll update my situation when I get somewhere.:)

Missed the deadline.rolleyes I guess I'll be studying OC'ing for dummies now. I'll give Ace some work instead.:-D

I've been meaning to read up on this subject but RL has taken precedence here lately. Appreciate the heads up on this augie.:major
    I'll keep killing -bigadv electrons.;)

Cool! Looks like I'll be folding SMP2's for you guys for a couple of weeks to check things out and see if I got it right, easy to see when nothing else is contributing to my confusion ;)

Darn easy to install for us old folders using Stanford's SMP MPICH guide plus making sure that -advmethods is enabled after saying yes to advanced options, which they managed to omit.:boxing:banghead:-D BTW, they say Vista but this works for W7 too.

I should have my first result tomorrow but it won't even be close to what I had with the GTX260.:( However, my i7 seems to be ontrack for March or April.:celebrate

That's great news on the comp. I guess I'll have to talk to ACE about my set up to generate more heat for the house.;)
Can't let you get ahead of me on that production curve now. After all, this new hardware is broken in pretty good and needs a real good work out.
(Hmm, need to study up on case air flow, fan specs, TIM, voltages, etc. :crap I got a lot of reading to do in the next 2 months.:p)

I think i will stay with my VM for the moment as i have got it running at just over 5 min per %step and it completes almost 2 full units per day, I can't tell you the PPD because i can not get Fahmon to run (must be stupid) i just can not figure out how to set it up:-o

I looked at Bigadv but the time limit is what put me off as i can not run 24/7 and i would probably miss the deadlines.

BILL use this application to monitor - http://code.google.com/p/hfm-net/

Does a much better job and provides more information.
When you set it up you have to tell it the client is on a VM and if you are running ubuntu, you have to share the folder containing the folding information.
Your basic information on connecting has to contain the correct IP address which the VM adapter is assigned.
Also in the ?preferences? you have to change your EOC number and name to collect the correct overall points and WU numbers which it pulls from their stats.

Sorry Ibmest but i have spent hours trying to get HFM and Fahmon to work and i know i am just making a basic mistake somewhere but for me nothing works so i just let it fold happily away and check the points periodically.

I love HFM but I could never get it to track my VM. Apparently, if one accesses the VM from another PC, then it works. I tried from my :confusedother PC but I just gave up.;)

BTW, if one is going to go the SMP2 route(everyone eventually will have to) add the passkey to your current folding due to bonuses not being added to production stats for the first 10 WUs and the numbers will be anemic, a guy with the same CPU as mine Q6600 only got some 700 PPD. Once this WU finishes, I'm going to kill SMP2 until I have my 10 under my belt. It shouldn't take long if my GPU's fold 353's after entering the passkey.:)

Oopsie, ignore the GPU part for passkey, they don't count. Sorry.:-o

Wow, a whopping 484 points for 17hrs of stock Q6600 SMP2 a3 crunching.:-D Definitely need those bonus points to kick in to make the quad production at least respectable but with a loss of some %30 compared to an a2 VM. I've got some 8 days or so until I have 10 passkeyed WUs under my belt so I'll spend that time learning how to OC my machine to get the most out of what I have and to learn the ins and outs of SMP2.;)

It's kind of sad really when a stock Q6600 is going to be the tipping point of CPU's for future folding!:cry

By the way, if you're trying out the a3s and using HFM without having 10 passkeyed WUs, be advised that you will see the bonus already calculated in the PPD so don't be disappointed like I was.;) HFM doesn't know if you have the 10 or not. Only Stanford knows and I doubt they'd add a column for a one time thing. As it is, they want everybody to use a passkey so are forcing us in that direction starting with the SMP2s.

I am really happy with my VM as it is now doing each % in just over 5 min,
Except at this moment where it has started a new unit and it says "writing local files" after each step and it takes 10 min per % but that's still OK but i am not sure if that will produce more points at the end??

I can't say Bill, but for me when I see 'writing local files' it means that I am folding an a1 WU, which takes almost double the time of an a2 WU. I would check your latest log as lots of folks have been getting a1's recently, including me. I'm working on one right now.

Go up to the header in the log and you'll see which WU you have running. I'm betting on an a1.;) Just for comparison's sake, my a1's are 18 minutes versus 9 for the a2.

Unfortunately, that will most likely produce less points. Check psummary(google it) and find the points you should be getting for it.

I just got a new one and this is taking 18 min per step.

Are you folding on all 8 cores? I can't tell what you have going there, you need to C&P the log header and wrap it with the Code tag, the # at top right of posting window.
