    Greetings,

I was screwing around on my g-friends computer and turned off her firewall (for just a minute), and guess what? I forgot to turn it back on. Now her system has some problems.

The majority of desktop icons have been replaced with some sort of placeholder icons (they are all the same). Each icon has the same extension (.lnk) and they do not launch programs. This replacement(with the same failure to launch) has been made as well in the start menu/all programs/<program name>.

I *can* launch the programs (firefox for example) by navigating through the harddrive using windows explorer (C:/program files/mozilla firefox/ for example).

I have run the suggested programs and will post the log files. I can't seem to find the logfile that mgtools is supposed to generate??

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I found the mglog.zip file. Right where it was supposed to be, somehow I missed it.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

You have leftovers from Symantec to remove. Please run the below then reboot. After reboot run it one more time.

    Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
Ad-Aware SE Personal <-- Way out of date and ineffective.
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 5 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZKfox000

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run MSconfig and put your PC into Normal Startup mode as was requested in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Chaslang,

I thank you for your help. I grew impatient, and simply went ahead and reinstalled the OS. So things are working now. Next time, I will be more patient and follow instructions more carefully(I bumper my own thread).

Does this site have a way of making a donation?

Failing that, I will make a $10 donation to Spybot (or wherever else you prefer), in appreciation for your assistance. I am certain that I will benefit from this site in many ways, and wish to show my appreciation.

Thanks! Make a donation to your favorite charity. :) If you have no favorite, how about Make A Wish or something to do with cancer research (two of my favorites).
