I love old movies and I love most old-time actors. But how did anyone ever consider Cary Grant "classy".

Granted, he's handsome, but his delivery is so rapid-fire and so cheesy, he reminds me more of Robin Williams than of the other "classy" leads of the era (Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy, etc).

Ever seen Arsenic and Old Lace? I swear he's channeling the mohel on Seinfeld!

    Just not gettin' it....

You left off Humphrey Bogart, my personal favorite. Never cared or Grant.

Yeah, me too. Always liked Bogart more than Grant. Guess Cary Grant was from the 'Tall, dark stranger = handsome' era.

Talk dark stranger would be just FINE if he acted restrained, like Gregory Peck or Clark Gable. It's his affiliation with the Shemp Howard school of acting which bothers me.

Bogart, otoh, is from the short fat & ugly school. Like Edward G Robinson.

Which is fine, I suppose, since they both usually played thugs.

Me, I'll stick with Gregory Peck.

Sorry, I was channeling an upgraded Bogart . . . :-D Out of the two, Bogie is my favorite. I don't get the Cary Grant thing either . . . but my wife is crazy about him. To be fair, she likes Bogart also . . .

I thought he did a good film in "to catch a thief" with Mrs Grimaldi.

    You forgot Clark Gable.
and "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

I actually like that about him, yes agreed he is a handsome chap, but its that quick witted humour that made his films all the more enjoyable to watch.

As you say like Robin Williams, an actor that is very popular due to his quick wit, so you could say Cary Grant was ahead of his time in this genre of film.

Comedy was his genre, plus the man was still gorgeous later in his years.
