I have been having some weird issues the past few days, and now, this VRDB icon has suddenly (apparently on its own) jumped-up and starting spinning (generating a back-up?).

Does this mean it "detects" an infection please?

    Thanks in advance...

It's nothing to worry about. The VRDB is automatically run approximately once every three weeks. It's just placing copies of some Windows files in the chest for safe keeping. I think the default setting is for it to run only when the system is idle. In Avast 5.0, Alwil has done away with the VRDB.

Interesting - thank you. I've had Avast for years (on two separate machines), and I don't think I've ever noticed the icon splitting (and the VRDB spinning) on the taskbar/notification area there, since I first installed it.

    Hmm...oh well...thanks again!

My short term memory is terrible but, as I recall there were a few settings for the VRDB. It could be configured to not run at all, only run when the screen saver was running(not sure on that one) or when the system was idle. And you could force it to "Run Now" from the right click context menu on the "a" globe in the SysTray. The "a" globe could be configured to, always show the VRDB globe or to hide it except when it was running.

I believe you are correct on all of that.

And I may well have inadvertently clicked on it and got it going (have some spine issues which cause my hands/fingers to be a bit erratic at times).

It ran for probably close to two hours (well over an hour, anyway), which I thought was pretty interesting. I was afraid for awhile there that it was bad news, and was never going to stop (!) - but all "seems" well this evening...so far...

    Thanks again!
