Some people wake up to the sunshine. Some people wake up to birds singing. What do I wake up to?? the sound of water POURING into my living room from the ceiling.. and to make matters worse, it's BROWN WATER!!!! :puke

More than HALF my carpet is soaked, I had to cover my couch with plastic trash bags so it wouldn't get any MORE wet. I've been emptying trash cans left and right and just been a nightmare.. I'm ready to go postal if this water doesn't stop soon!:boxing

Oh, and I can't go to work while its like this, waiting for the landlord to fix it and I need him to hurry because I can't afford a day off, especially with the snow that supposed to come tomorrow and I probably won't make it to work then! :crybaby

Ah that sucks. My parents house is pretty beat up and we are pretty poor. And so things(gotta go how they go) cant pay to fix it. But yeah the roof feel in and after years of no roof fix. The rain just feel from top floor down the door entrances like a rain fall.. Then finally made it down to main floor and made water bumbles on the newly painted walls we just did. And so now we got her fix.. but hey it sucks and ruins your day/week.

That sucks, dyamond. :( Your landlord should have to fix the problem and pay for the damage to your furniture and other property. A decent person would toss in some cash for your trouble.

He is currently fixing it, I'm not sure what's going to happen but I think they might need to rip the carpet up because its soaked with dirty, nasty water and that will really start to smell. I don't know what happened but if it's my neighbors fault I'm sure he will make them pay for the damages but seriously I WILL have a mental breakdown in 5 minutes if the water doesn't stop. I cant stand listening to it anymore!!!!! http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy290/lotzasmilies/gnome.gif

Just remember it is not your problem financially, and as a renter you have rights that are rock solid. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this.

    Awww dude thats harsh.

And yes, ANYTHING that got water damage should be replaced, mould will start to grow and come summer with some humidity it will be hazzardous to your health.

The landlord should be covered under insurance but if for some reason he's not and it was in no way your fault then you make damn sure he pays for it.

I know some landlords don't care. all they want is rent and some people are afraid to take up issues incase they get evicted. Don't be one of those people.

I am really sorry to hear about the water Dyamond :eek

Before we moved to our new apartment the house we lived in was 60 years old and had a few bits built on and some bits knocked off.

When the wind and rain came from the north water would come in between the garage and the kitchen, no matter what i did i could not find where it came from.
I re-sealed all the garage roof but it still came in and the strange thing when the wind was in any other direction not one drip???

    @ Bill.. That's reallly weird!

My landlord is a pretty good guy. He always comes immediately when I call him about locking myself out (LOL) and one time I lost my keys and he came and replaced the locks for me. I asked him how much I owed him for the new locks and he said don't worry about it. I hear him upstairs doing some work, now I just have to wait until he comes down so I can know what he is going to do about the damage. I took pictures just incase though. Never know when you will need pictures.

    Holy Christ!
You wer'nt kidding when you said "Pouring"

Lucky you were home really, if left to it's own devices that could have done some serious damage, I'm sure it has but would have been much worse.

Oh Dya, just because the water is brown doesn't mean it's from the toilet.;) Clean water picks up all the dust and stuff between the floor and your ceiling and becomes brown that way.:) Yes, get rid of the carpet as the others have said, too bad.:(

Whoa, that is terrible, Dy! I am sure your landlord will take care of it, and I agree, you will need new carpet. No doubt about that, or it is going to smell the high heavens this summer.. Also, check your furniture that did get wet. This time of year, I doubt if you can dry it out. I am sure your landlord will want to know, what all got wet and ruined. He should make sure your roof gets fixed, and your wet/ruined should be replaced, at no cost to you, as you didn't do it..

Best of luck to you, and yes, those pix are something..

I have that same ceiling light in my kitchen!

Seriously, that's horrible. At least you're renting, if that happened in my house, I don't know what I'd do. I hope it gets straightened out for you. eww. Good luck.

I'm a carpet and furniture cleaner by trade.

You need to have everything that has been contaminated cleaned or at least treated within 3 days, if not by then, it will need to be replaced. Especially the couch, try to get your hands on some disinfectant, the more powerful, the better. Look in Hope Depot --- they have a good line of commercial grade products called Zep. Use the product as directed on the couch and press it into the padding with plastic. If the carpet is padded, the padding may not be salvageable but the carpet can be saved. Unfortunately, professional carpet cleaning equipment and chemicals are needed to save the carpet even if it's not padded. The fibers are too course to be effectively cleaned with a Rug Doctor because you need the backing and base of the carpet cleaned, not just the surface.

In the meantime, run some fans and open (crack) the windows to promote drying.

EDIT:Looking at your pics, it looks like you have commercial grade carpeting. There may be no padding or the padding is built into the carpet. If padding is built in, it's probably best to replace. Pull up the carpet in a corner (pinch the carpet near the corner with pliers) and see if the carpet is glued down, or if it has the built-in padding.

Thanks for the tips!! :) I will look into the disinfectant for the couch.

As for the carpet, the claims adjuster was just here and he said all the carpet in the living room needs to be ripped up and replaced because of how water damaged it is. I was speaking to my landlord's son and he told me that there was so much water that it flooded the upstairs neighbors kitchen and dining room and came down into my apt. (thank God I woke up and grabbed all those buckets, it could have been much worse!) and then soaked through my floor and left about a inch of water in the basement... yikes! There are also about 12-16 ceiling tiles that need to be replaced along with the light fixture.

So, some guys from service magic (I think) are coming to rip up the carpet today. I'm not happy about missing work today because I'm not getting paid but at least I get to go in tomorrow...yay rolleyes

    So the good news are:

    1. You were home, so the computers in the corner were kept safe. That's good. :)

    2. If a claims adjuster shows up, that means insurance is going to pay to repair the damages. That's VERY good.

Also, the water on those pictures looks YUCK!!! :puke

I agree with those saying it's unlikely it's anything other than just water that picked things up on the way, but that doesn't mean it's pleasant or sanitary either. The fact your landlord has people there to rip up and replace the carpet already seems like a good sign. It implies he's not nearly as much of a bastard weasel as some landlords I've had. :) In all, this could have been worse. By being home and ready to put all those buckets and things down, you probably prevented it from getting a lot, lot worse than it is right now. Your landlord should thank you. ;)

Oh, and I didn't notice it before, but I love that signature. :)

Hey just look at it as your getting new carpet for your apt. even tho it sucks the way it happen. My 1st apt I didn't know unitl I signed the papers but my 1st Apt building caught fire in my Apt. and they replaced windows, walls, carpet and ceiling. After I moved in I seen other Apt and they were all 80 colors orange and brown and people actually didn't like me due to me having a nice apt. :-D But thats a whole another story about my drug dealing neighbors.
