This is a little silly but it's something I've thought about several times.

I've asked many people this question and the reply is usually the same until I explain my thoughts.

Anyway, the question in...question is this.

Given the scientific research into many types of living things from horses to bacteria and given that we know very little about "How things work" on the grand scale of things.... Do you think Apples have feelings? Can they feel stuff?

Think about it for a moment.

    Interesting eh?

    I don't think I know apples don't have feelings,they don't have a central nervous system,brain tissue,pain receptors ect ect.

We don't know much in the scheme of things but know this much.

lol And my normal answer to that response is...

How do you know they have no feelings? because they havn't been discovered yet?
Actually Rikky this comes down to what I said the other day about possibilities beyond the knowledge of science.
Maybe in 50 years we will discover a different type of nervous system in fruit... you can't say 100% I'm wrong lol
Same as time travel, we don't know anything "real" about it but it can't be completely dissmissed, surely that goes against the possibilities of discovery?

I'm telling you, Apples have feelings, you can hear them scream in every bite.

I agree! Heard 'em scream a few times when I was peeling them last November for my pie. Really let loose when I cut them up! :-D

I agree with Rikky and Nedlamar . . . I don't think plants can feel pain, but you never know what will be discovered in years to come. I think it interesting that plants will "react" to music, either in a positive or negative fashion, as evidenced by their health and rate of growth.

    I also agree with TimW ref Rikky's post . . . :-D

I know what your saying and aiming for,I knew you were going to post this next, its the same argument posted many times over with regard to the existence of god but its littered with false assumptions and vague definitions.

What are feelings? - The question has to be defined before if can be proposed, if it isn't the answer can become so abstract it bares no resemblance to the question i.e means anything and you will always be right! For example 'a warning light on a car proves a car has feelings!' Are all electrical signals feelings?

If feelings are defined as emotions- In evolution theory feelings are required to enable us to thrive in social situations, you steal my apple and chemicals are released in my brain so I feel bad I stay away from you or I die of starvation and don't pass on my DNA so are all chemicals released as consequence feelings? If so an electronic fuel system increases the ratio of fuel to air in an engine in the event of poor combustion, the engines become reliable efficient and they pass on the blueprints and make another engine so again does this mean a car has feelings or emotions?

So the answer to the questions depends GREATLY on what you qualify as feelings.

It also depends on what you qualify as an apple, when does an apple stop being an apple and become something else?

Science at our current level doesn't rule anything out,in fact at our our current understanding of physics all eventualities are possible but they are infinitely "I'm using the big number infinity not the actual infinity." improbable in our physical universe.

So what would be an acceptable answer to you? Like I said define the parameters for your question, anyone who proposes question in academic circles has to do this or the answer is always, yes,no,we can never know.

"We can never know." doesn't bare any resemblance to the physical world we call reality and that's the only world I care about, the only one that matters IMO.

Where are you getting the information that time travel is impossible? Time travel isn't ruled out by science its been proven to be fact :-D As you travel faster time relative to the space around you slows down by a factor of gamma, there's even a world record in the Guinness book of records for the most time travelled by an astronaut,I can't find a link ATM.

Try using this as evidence that you've paid taxes...You'll learn quit a bit about the physical science of a 6X8 cell. :-D

I had a pretty deep conversation with an apple named Bill once, and i can tell you all right now they do have feelings. We spoke about the meaning of life and when an apple speaks about lifes meaning, it can get depressing real quick. Imagine if you were raised from a seed only to be made into pie or sauce later on. And when most of that sauce ends up on a floor because baby threw the cup at your face, you really put the life of an apple into perspective. That apple gave its life to be thrown into someones face.

Considering the DNA of fruit is about 60% identical to humans it's a 100% certainty that given enough time someone will give birth to a talking apple. :-D

"Doctor is it a boy or a girl?"

    "An apple!"

@Rikky.... Firstly, nice self portrait :p
Secondly, I define feelings in this question as Joy, sadness, anger etc AND pain, pleasure etc.
MY way of thinking is along the lines of the thinking of Aliens, people speculate on what aliens look like, who's to say we could see them? They might have the form of gas.
We can't find anything resembling a brain or nervous system in Apples, but is that just because we can't see it?
Like Spad said, it's been proven plants react to music, if there is no form of "Feeling" in any way, why do they react?
You can't see the back of your head can you? But it's there isn't it ...... well for your sake I hope it is lol
As for the existance of god, I don't think it's the same argument, we don't know if God exists, what we do know is Religion is man made. But enough of that :p

And saying outright Apples don't have feelings is just being Applist :-D

    @Tux..... Me too :-D

@King Steve, I don't think I'll ever eat an apple again now lol

Right human emotions are human,we can only relate them to humans,an apple isn't human therefore an apple doesn't have human emotions, nothing apart from a human can have human emotions so the answer to your question in that sense is,No apples don't have human emotions.

Plants only respond to vibrations, they react because vibrations stimulate growth, this has been proven in countless scientific studies,it doesn't matter what the music is.

The existence of god is exactly the same argument as the one your proposing for apples, your trying to prove a negative in absence of evidence.

    Some reading for you

Congratulations Rikky!! You are the first person who has ever come up with a solid argument against my question.
    That makes perfect sense.
So now the question is "What kind of feelings do apples have?" :-D

Now you've said that I realized I already knew that lol, DoH!

    .

But are we talking of the existence of some form of super being? Or are we talking the truth of religious writings?

    Reading? No videos? :-D

You know you work your a$$ off typing answers to posts and threads, arguing point and counter point without ever expecting a reward then along comes the Nedlamar prize,I just wasn't expecting this,I'm filling up,so many people to thank.

It all started back in the late seventies when a ugly drunken man spewed into the lap of of an innocent young girl,if only she'd have walked away,me here today accepting this award, none of this would ever have happened...

Yeah Ned i do the same, think a lot that about things i don't understand, like who named certain things and why?
Like why do they call a banana a banana why gidn't they call it an apple and a apple a banana ! So how do you know ? when you're asking for a banana you might really be asking for an apple !
Me and my kids have a laugh about it and say things like, " Pass me the lighter because the cigarettes gone out " but my kids know that what i'm really saying is " Pass me the remote for the TV as the channel needs changing " LOL
Mental thought but, ( I Mean ), who did name these things, who named a sofa a sofa why didn't they name it a carpet and name the carpet a sofa ??????

Well look at this copied from google :
Sofa is a Turkish word, derived from the Arabic Suffa, which means carpet or divan (backless day-bed.) Suffa itself probably comes from the older Aramaic word Sippa.

The piece of furniture we call the sofa seems to have developed in Europe in the 17th or 18th century (there are sofas still existing from the Queen Anne era in the early 18th century.) It came from the French day-bed, and began to be made with springs (instead of being fully upholstered) around the 1800s.

In 18th century English, the word was often spelled SOPHA.

    Oh I have been lol
I do actually know what you mean though, it's like when you say a word over and over and it starts feeling odd when you say it.
My missus was talking on the phone earlier and was talking about a chemical burn on her hand, she kept saying "Raw" and after a few times I started to hear her doing a "Roar" instead of the word, all in my head I know lol

My mind fascinates me, I know that sounds funny but it does. I often find myself thinking of something and realize I was thinking about something completely different only a minute ago. So I try to retrace my thoughts to figure out the connection.

I often do what you do, wonder why things are called that, things that have been called that for hundreds if not thousands of years.

One of the reasons I loved the Hitchickers guide, the reasoning behind some stuff was awesome.
The Whale and bowel of petunias suddenly thrown into existence hurtling towards the earth from a great hight.
The Whale falling trying to think of what to call stuff.

"And what's this thing coming toward me very fast? So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like 'Ow', 'Ownge', 'Round', 'Ground'! That's it! Ground! Ha! I wonder if it'll be friends with me? Hello Ground! "

    And the follow up:

"Curiously the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias, as it fell, was, 'Oh no, not again.' Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly *why* the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now."
