Where do Microsoft Updates download to?

When I download security updates directly from Microsoft, are they stored in a file which I can access? I like to keep a copy of all updates, which I normally download from The Software Patch, but of course copying the Update site's files would save me a few KB.

Click>Start>All Programs Windows Updates in Vista
Or Run> type Windows Updates in in XP
Windows updates will open and you can view them !

Or if you mean where exactly are they stored : Usually they're stored in Temporary Internet Files directory, sometimes in \msdownload.tmp.
In Vista, Windows Updates go to \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution.
I think Xp is the same too !

    Or you can try C:WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload

but the format is not really usefull

the best solution here is to just take the KBxxxxxx number and search for it at www.microsoft.com

you will find the related security bulletin with downloads there

Or again another option is to ask NICK_ADSL_UK in these forums he's the master on MS Security updates and notifications.

    Rusty ! ;)

You could download the updates from Windows catalog site. I've done this for computers not connected to the internet. You can archive the updates.
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx
Sort by the OS you are running, then double click on the heading for date and it will sort from newest to oldest (single click sorts from oldest to newest).

This is my choice when it comes to updates, I do three folders, XP, Vista, then Other. In the "Other" folder I do all the office updates, DOT.net, directx, tweaks, etc. I then carry them on a flash drive. Make updating someone on dial up SOOOO much easier.

Good idea! I only have the comp here at home, fortunately.
That sounds like a lot of data. What size is your flash drive?

    thanks rusty :)
in vista they reside in \ Windows \ Software Distribution. if you ever have trouble with an update you can always delete the contents of the folder and start again

Note that this will delete the Update history and ALL updates will be reinstalled on your computer. Note that this will not harm your computer in any way.

If you are running Windows Vista, type in Windows Update in the search box and press Enter.

Windows Updates should show you that you’ve never checked for updates before, so go ahead and click “Check for Updates” to begin re-installing all updates.
