Did I do the right thing?

So earlier today I smelled smoke and I went out to the kitchen to find the toaster was on fire. So first I unplugged it but that didn't help any. I didn't think it was such a good idea to throw water on an electrical device so I took the fire extinguisher, it was the first time I ever used it. It made a mess, a lot of foam everywhere, but the fire went out.

Did I do the right thing? I never thought to call 911. (That's the emergency services for those people in countries who don't use 911. :p)

Yes, you did the right thing, Aimee.

You should only call 911 if it's an emergency. The first thing you should try is the fire extinguisher. If that doesn't work, and it spreads even a little after that...you call 911.

That right there means you were thinking. And then you put out the fire. Yeah, you might have made a mess, but that's a lot better than watching the kitchen burn down while you wait for the fire department to arrive. ;)

911 is for emergencies you need help with. You took care of this one on your own. :strong

Nice to see some people have enough sense to be able to think in an emergency.

    Well done :)

What would be advisable now is to figure out why it caught fire.
Was it just because the toast was in too long? Or the toaster faulty? or most important to rule out, was/is the socket faulty? Don't mean to make you worry but you don't want a repeat.

Not quite sure what the problem was. When the toast was pried out out there were several holes and it was all black so maybe that's it, it was in too long.

If you definitely had it unplugged, water would have worked. But the important thing is you took action and possibly saved the house, and maybe some lives.
    Good work, kudos!!:wave

Either my mom or my cat :-D put the bread in.

I did unplug it, but I didn't really want to have the small risk of electrocution.

That would be good... that's much easier to avoid in the future than a faulty wall socket or bad toaster.

Kept your head, very good. Toasters are known for catching fire even when not in use, I keep mine unplugged when not in use.

    Nope, it wasn't me.

One time my mom accidentally set our old microwave on fire by leaving a fork in it. She unplugged it and the fire went out. She took it to the repair shop and although the thing is still working we eventually got a newer model so it's in storage.

    Well done Aimee.....

I do want to make one small point though. As a 20 year veteran of the Emergency Services... even if the fire is out, call 911 and have them come check it out. Only because with electrical type fires, it *could* have caused a short that may have allowed the wires behind the outlet to heat up and smolder. The Fire Dept can check that out for you so that you don't go out for breakfast and a new toaster and com back to a burnt down home.

Wish more people thought that quickly and well though, would make my life soooo much easier. :)
