    Hi
I have 'REDTEN' pc system - p4 foxconn 945gz motherboard. The mobo has only one ide connector with a hard drive and dvd ram writer attached. There are 'sata' connectors available. Please advise how I attach a second hard drive making it the 'master' and the original the 'slave'
regards and many thanx in anticipation

You will have to set the IDE jumpers to slave, there will be a picture on the drive itself showing where the jumper settings are.
The SATA should then simply boot as Master, this doesn't always work depending on compatability but I have my sons PC set up like this.

    Sata Master slot 1
    Sata Slave slot 2
    IDE slave
    DVD drive IDE

You may have to set it in BIOS also, like I said it depends, your MOBO manual would be more helpful to you, if you don't have it you should be able to download it from the Manufacturer's website.

Not true. As I said in the other thread, the IDE setup does not need to be touched as a native SATA drive can be purchased and just go straight to a SATA connector without interfering with the IDE at all.

Really? To be honest I always done it automatically, I don't think I've ever tried just leaving it alone.

What about when you have a compatability issue between SATA and IDE?
I've seen some people go for Cable select and others go for slave and some go for Master, I assume there is no hard and fast rule to this since it's motherboard dependant?

I certainly know I had some issues with my DVD SATA drive with IDE HDD.

SATA ports can only accept one device at a time. All the SATA ports will be routed to a dedicated SATA chip on the motherboard that will then go to the southbridge chip.

The IDE devices go directly to the southbridge chip. (I think) Thus there should be no compatability issues between IDE and SATA as they are routed independently of one another on the motherboard.

With the IDE, as long as both devices connected to the IDE cable are IDE devices, either one must be a master for that cable and one must be a slave, or a cable select cable can be used with both devices on that cable can be set to cable select. Thus if you have 2 IDE cables on a system you could easily have 2 master and 2 slave devices.

Yes Ned, I'm wondering if you actually have both IDE devices on the same cable jumpered as slave? I don't think that is possible. Or do you have two IDE cables?

Actually Sach thats a good point, I didn't mention what the DVD drive is and to be perfectly honest I'm not sure, I set the optical drive up nearly 2 years ago and HDD's have been swapped around a few times. Although I've always set them to slave unless I changed it at some point.
I would go and look but as I said, it's my sons PC and if I venture into his room I may never be found again lol
