Daft Desktops, Millions of Mad Icons and superfluous software
I don’t know a lot about computers, in fact almost nothing, the little bit I do know I try to share, the one thing that bugs me is Icons duplicated all over the place, there in the sys tray on the desk top on the start menu. Apart from Mailwasher, Superantispyware, Malware bytes recycle bin and the control panel there’s hardly anything on my own. So, how do I convince people there’s no need for them?

I agree, no matter how many times I tell folk to get rid of the desktop icons they dont listen.

Lower power PCs and specs a PC could boot slower as have you ever seen a PC load and the icons all come to life one at a time! but this is only normally at boot, more geared to the older Windows versions low spec CPUs and <512mb ram pcs, once all booted there is little or no resources used by the desktop icons, just looks fugly.

Our works IT dept do advise not to save anything to desktop as for us its not secure place to save files, network drives are for that, and they will routinely do a sweep and clean PC desktops up so if you have important files then sorry they gone, but this is not same for home pcs. Although I always say clean desktop and save files not to desktop (unless its in a guide like a malware removal one, but this is a temp thing) and while you may think its a quick way to open apps in the end there will be that much on the desktop you wont find anything, so use start menu and folder managment.

Ugh...can't stand looking at other's computers, this being one of the reasons. How can people stand looking at those. I really believe they don't know that they can get rid of those. Plus, I think a lot of people's computers are set to download files onto their desktop. They also have no clue that once you install a program, you can delete the .exe file. Makes me crazy.

Yep, it's somewhat analogous to leaving something important on your tabletop at home. Works for two or three things, assuming they're not moved, anyway. But pretty soon you won't be able to find anything for all the clutter.

Better to store multiple icons in desktop folders if you really must have those icons handy. But a decent menu for them is better still, .i.mo.

I get customers/friends with Desktop junk everywhere all the time, complaining they can't find anything and the computer is sloow. I tell them it's better to get rid of unneeded clutter, and do it for them if necessary. They agree, only to have the old mess of icons and shortcuts everywhere again in a week's time rolleyes. That's when I start charging them for my time and tell them if ya don't wanna pay for it, then don't tell me about it. Stupid is, as stupid does, I guess.

Also, as Halo said, it's less secure/private.

Btw...it couldn't possibly be that any of us are OCD about our computers. :-D

I know a person who loves using firefox cause he can set it to download to his desktop. I keep telling what a bad idea that is but his opinion is that his computer is just another toy and he likes playing with it and treating that way. And if something goes wrong he'll just bring it to me to fix!!
And the heck of it is, I would fix it.:-D:-D:-D

Sooo, who's the smart one here?:confused

I have loads of stuff on my desktop because unlike many I actually use my computers to do stuff:-D:p

The only things I have in folders are multiple identical files such as video and music,I'm all about less clicks so everything I use even if I only use it once a week its on my desktop.

I have no problem finding stuff because every icon is a different colour and/or distinctive and regardless of that after using a desktop icon a few times I instinctively know where it is and if not they are arranged alphabetically.

The virtual desktop is one of the greatest inventions of the IT age and is there to be taken advantage of IMO,its like having everything in your house all on one table,I'd love to have race with some of you tidy freaks see how fast you can get stuff done.

My desktop has 2 icons. One being the Recycle Bin and the other is remote for an emergency.

The icons are all in 3 folders in 3 toolbars on the bottom. They're hidden. First one is being used for maintenance, 2nd for software I don't use weekly. The 3rd is for Media. I know exactly in what folder every icon is. These folders are actually in "My Documents". I just click on for example on App1 and get the folder as shown in pic 2. Then I just click on the software I want.

I want to see a clean desktop because I love and enjoy to see a clean pic. LOL

Wow... ermm... ummm... I'm so embarrassed I'm not even going to post a screenie.

My desktop is in serious need of cleaning up... I do tend to accumulate crap on my desktop, then every couple months, I distribute it to where I need it or bump it off to the old storage drive.... currently in need of a good cleaning.. :)

Yes, as we tell folks in malware removal, the desktop is a great place for malware to hide, having many many files here can impact on system performance, and is also an easy way to lose information....as I found out the hard way when testing out a batch file one morning :-D

my desktop is a way point to more secure areas.

I download everything to the desktop, then move it were it needs to go.

I only have 2 files on my desktop constantly, and those are just there cause I am too lazy to move them off. Icons are stored in the 2 docks I run all the time.

I don't even have a recycle bin on my desktop

Yes. Sorry, but moving applications will make the registry links to them invalid.
