Problems after installing AVG 9

I installed AVG 9 a few months ago and like many other folks, I immediately had issues.

The initial optimizer scan seemed to make my hard drive go berserk. It sounded like my hard drive was spinning very fast non-stop and wouldn't stop. And the computer ran like molasses. I could see that the avgschx.exe or whatever it was was using 99% of processor so...

I uninstalled AVG 9 and reinstalled AVG 8.5 but now it still sounds like my hard drive starts spinning non-stop shortly after boot up and won't stop. Processor says normal 0% but I can hear something is spinning fast and computer is very slow. Unless there is a second fan in the middle of my laptop, it seems it could only be the hard drive.

I can't be certain it is related to AVG but that is precisely when the problem started. About the same time I upgraded to IE7 and I now have two iexplore.exe processes running when I open IE7. So, I don't know if it is a software issue or malware but I am attaching the logs you request.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

I'm sorry but problems with AVG software are not malware problems. AVG is a resource hog we don't really recommend it. Especially for people like you who are running Windows XP on a PC that cannot properly support Windows XP. Your PC is too old, too slow, and does not have enough memory. The below is from your logs.

    Code:
    Processor x86 Family 6 Model 9 Stepping 5 GenuineIntel ~599 Mhz

    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 123.17 MB
Old model computers/processors even when 4 times faster than yours, wiill still be slow with modern day protection software and with updated Windows XP SP3.

Recommendation: Get a new PC if you wish to run Windows XP SP3 and have any other software on it to keep you protected. Get a dual core processor of at least 2.2 GHz and 2 GB of RAM for Win XP and 3 GB of RAM for Vista or Win 7.

Thank you for that info, chaslang. With all due respect, please tell me something I don't already know.

Like I said, I don't know for certain what the problem is, I only know that it began at that time. Prior to installing AVG 9, everything was fine and dandy, lickety split. For all I know AVG had nothing to do with it and it was something I downloaded. Perhaps you could at least take a look at the logs?

    Thanks again.

Here are the the malware scan logs which were clean.

Just to be clear, this laptop is about three years old, Pentium M 1.8 ghz. I know there isn't much RAM. I borrowed this when my own laptop went south. If I had $700 to buy a new one, I wouldn't be here. If it isn't too much trouble, perhaps you could at least look at the scans I ran and see if maybe something funky stands out?

I am a full time student, working part-time just to pay the rent. I don't have money to buy a new computer. This is it.

    Thank you.

    OK, I'm a little confused.

You tell me in this thread that "AGV is not a malware problem", eg. I am in the wrong thread subject. THEN you close my thread under the software heading.

What heading should I be posting under?

If I knew what the issue was I wouldn't be coming to you in the first place. I realize you are probably very busy with easier problems, but, can't you offer me something more than "buy a new computer"?

I am told that this computer was purchased new less than four years ago. I realize it isn't cutting edge, but, not everyone is so well off in this economy to be able to buy the latest thing. If I could afford to purchase a new one or take it to a real computer repair place, I wouldn't be HERE.

I already did. Your PC is the problem and also what you are running. AVG is a resource hog and your PC is too old and does not have the abiltity run run WIndows XP. Not sure why you don't understand this. It is just a plain fact.

I already did which is why I said you are not having malware problems.

According to your logs it was reported as
which means something is wrong (not malware) if being reported this way. Perhaps defective memory.

If the PC really is running at 1.8 GHz, the processor type is still old and slow by todays dual and quad core standards which are really better suited for updated versions of Windows XP thru Win 7. But either way, you need more RAM. 1GB is the minimum but you really need 2 GB.

As stated below, I did already and your problem is with the PC specs.

Yes because I already told you what the problem is and it is not necessary to have another thread in the Software Forum where someone would have to get all the same info I already have here to tell you the same thing.

As stated if your PC was really a 600 MHz PC, you would need to buy a new PC. If it is really running at 1.8 GHz ( and it is possible that MSINFO32 which is used by MGtools is reporting it wrong. MSINFO32 is a Microsoft program ) then your best bet is to install 2 GB of RAM ( or 1 GB minimum if you cannot afford 2 GB). Also don't use AVG. Try Avira or Avast.

Ok, I looked at the MGTools log sysinfo.txt and I see what you are talking about. I don't know why MSINFO is reporting that way. My Computer/Sytem Information says Intel(R) Pentium(R) M, 1700Mhz, 512 RAM.

If someone had swapped out the processor, I think it would show up in the System Information under My Computer. I don't really know what to do. I discovered by accident that if I boot up under battery power and let it run down to standby without doing anything, I can bring it back up on AC power and things seem to work OK... sort of. At least the HD doesn't spin constantly. Can't imagine why that works.

I will try rerunning the scans and logs and see if something different happens as I simply don't have funds for a new computer right now.

    Thank you for your time.

PS FWIW, this is a Dell Latitude D800 purchased new with XP installed in late 2006

Sometime MSINFO32 does report things incorrectly, but possibly it is due to a problem causing your system to look like it is running at that speed (maybe a reason for it seeming slow) which could be a hardware problem.

Either way, you are not having malware problems and my only suggestions for you still stand,
    • install at least 1 GB of memory ( better to get 2 GB)
    • and uninstall AVG
