Why is it whenever one decent person decides to do good in society, another takes it upon themselves to be a social pain in the arse? Getting rid of these 'citizens' should be made a priority if only to make the world a better place for those who want to make the world better. I'm with Pax. Death to the scum. Or stick them all on a little island together to fight it out among themselves. That would be poetic justice, violent crims having to be violent to each other just to survive. That would make great reality TV.
Seriously, Sarge, I want to send best wishes to your niece and husband, the kids and all your family who are being guardian angels. I really want to see a happy outcome on this one.
Here's hoping that junkie meat head gets what's due to him.
    Good luck.

An update...do you want the good news or the bad news first? rolleyes Let's go with good.

They were informed today that as of February 23, they are no longer a foster home, they are a pre-adoptive home. Which means the kids are no longer foster kids, they are almost theirs!

Sorry, this one is longer. This means that as of the end of this month, they will no longer be receiving their foster care income, the kids will lose their state-paid health insurance, and they will no longer be allowed to claim them for food stamps. Which means they will be living on my nephew's income alone, which comes to just under $200 more per month than their rent (no utilities included).

Also, the birth father's appeal has NOT yet been decided. Apparently, it can take anywhere from three months to 18 months for the three-judge panel to decide, after which he is allowed to appeal to the state supreme court if he so chooses. They met a family today who has been waiting for over a year for their decision.

When they do adopt, they will be paid their adoptive family subsidy retroactively from the time their foster care income was cut off, and the kids' insurance will be restored. But for those of us paying attention, we know that is small comfort when all money (over 50% of their income) and insurance will be cut off as of Monday morning, and they have no idea how long it might be before that happens.

So...it's a big step forward, but really, really sucks. :(

Gee, Sgt. Tibbs, they just can't win no matter which way they turn! Can they get ANY help at all? OK, so their foster-parenting income & Ins. will be gone, but what about state aid? Surely they have got to qualify for "Mi My Child" for some assistance? Yeah, that really bites... I know, even a kick in the caboose is a step in the right direction, but to strip them of everything, seems like a step backwards.., isn't much help either.:(...

good news bad news. The children should still be eligible for health care maybe under a different title. There is something called healthy children available to low income families. I'm sure it's a nation wide program. Was one of Senator Kennedy's, bless his heart.

Jeez, and here's me thinking that my country was crap at giving it's underpriveleged a bit of a leg up. That really blows, Tibbsy.
Glad to hear that your nephew and his family have been looked on favourably and the system has come to realise that Mr Jerkov is a bad dad. The right and fairest result on that part, anyway.
    Best wishes to all concerned.

The kids are eligible for WIC, as is she, so that'll help. It will keep them in doctor's visits and also buy bread, milk, juice...stuff like that for the kids.

Here's the funniest thing ever, though. She's pregnant!! roflmao roflmao LOL

It shouldn't be funny, yet it is. Apparently that's how it works...you're told you can never have children, you adopt some, and BAM! One of your own! LOL

Wow what a twist with the story. Congrats for her having her own and them being able to go with WIC.

Sounds like she is going to have a house-full this summer! :hyper:hyperLOL I think it is great, myself. To finally have one of her own.. :) I have a very good friend, who tried for 16 years, and finally was successful with IVF. Funny, she said they don't implant "litters" there like they do here in the U.S. LOL

Seriously, Sgt. Tibbs , I think things will work out for them. Even the WIC may not be a lot, but it is something, and who knows what is down the road? They do sound happy, and that is important:) Best of Luck to them;)

Yo ST... glad to hear that things are moving in the right direction... even if slowly. Was thinking that perhaps Mimsy and myself and a few other of our fellow geeks with sharp metal pointy thingys could swing out and pay a visit to the scumbag and gently 'remind' him that pursuing this would not be good for his health... *grin*

Sorry, it's the Italian in me I guess...

    Sweet gods of mercy...

What are you doing online? Go be with her. We'll be here whenever you need support or anything else we can give, but right now, this isn't where you should be.

She asked me to leave her alone with her family for a couple of days...said she'd call me when she was ready to have a conversation. I'll probably be going to stay with them for a few days soon.

Thank you to everyone. I realize this isn't really the place to deal with huge personal issues (heck, I've made fun of a couple of people for doing it in the past), but it does help to be able to talk a bit. She hadn't yet made the big family announcement about the new baby (would've been next weekend at her son's birthday party), and right now she has decided that other than with her husband, mother and sister, and me, she's going to act as if it never happened with everyone else. Which includes MY mother, with whom I live. It's been a bit tricksy coming up with reasons why I keep bursting into tears.

I take everything back. Whatever she asks you to do obviously out-ranks advice from a cynical internet stranger like me. :)

Especially with people who don't know any of the others involved. It makes it easier to keep just enough of a distance to avoid falling apart. That's why confession works... it's a stranger listening without knowing any other version than yours.

Depending on your age, you should be able to blame either PMS or menopause. ;)

Or you can do what I did to my mother once. I told her that it was not my secret to reveal, and that I would never betray a friend's trust and confidence in me just to make myself feel better or make her feel less uncomfortable, and if she had a problem with that then she should have raised me differently.

All things considered, she took it rather well. :)

Ooooooooh!!!! I LIKE IT! It's like something she would say to me, so it'll work even better. :-D

As for the first part I didn't quote...meh...you may be an internet stranger, but I've noticed we tend to think a lot alike. I would've said the same thing had the situation been reversed. :)

@ Sgt Tibbs.... so sorry to hear about that. As long as I've been in the medical field, there is nothing that breaks my heart more than the loss of a child, born or not. My sincerest condolences to you and yours. As to your mom... well.. the other best bet is that you're feeling stressed about this whole situation and it just bugs the hell outta you... women are lucky in that you can all have a good cry whenever you feel lilke it and no one really thiks anything of it.

Pardon the typos... too freaking tired to go back and correct.

The townhouse complex has a duty towards their safety. You would think that the townhouse complex would be happy to rid themselves of the liability rather than charge them $1200 to break their lease.

Your reletatives need to talk to someone other than the townhouse complex manager. They need to talk to the person highest up the chain. If that doesn't work, they need to make the townhouse complex clearly aware of their situation (written description and photo) and ask the townhouse complex how they plan provide them security while in the townhouse complex common areas. There is some property laws that give a duty to the townhouse complex to keep rift raff off its premise/to keep . (I can't think of what they are at the moment. Post at http://boston.craigslist.org/forums/?forumID=73 and ask for help). The townhouse complex should be glad of bring rid of the situation rather than charging! to rid themselves of such a liaiblity.

    From
    http://www.schultztrombly.com/CM/FS...njury/Premises-Liability.asp?focus=topic&id=1

An owner or occupier of land has a duty to warn a licensee of a dangerous condition that creates an unreasonable risk of harm if it is known to the owner or occupier and not likely to be discovered by the licensee. Thus, a homeowner would need to warn a social guest about non-obvious, hazardous conditions such as loose steps or a broken handrail that appear to be fine. Property owners have no duty to licensees to inspect for defects or to fix known defects. As such, it is not necessary for a homeowner to check for potential hazards and fix them before having a party. The owner or occupier does have a duty to exercise reasonable care in the conduct of active operations to protect a licensee he or she knows is on the property.

Blah, blah, blah. The townhouse complex does have a duty to exercise reasonable care in operating the townhouse complex to protect your relatives while they are in the common area. Also, once your relatives give written details to the townhouse complex, either the townhouse complex has to go around to all of its renters and tell them (warn them) that they are not safe beause of this guy that the police believe people need protection from or they could just let your relatives out of their lease. The townhouse complex won't want to scare all of it renters 'cause they will just leave once their lease is over. Your relatives can offer to go around on behalf of the townhouse complex and tell all the renters just at how at risk they are. Your relatives just need to push the righttownhouse complex buttons and talk to the right townhouse complex people.

The key difference between your situation and others (like domestic abuse and restraining orders) is the police presence. The police presence validate the public danger of the situation. Unless this townhouse complex routinely has the police there to protect people, I can't imagine that they wouldn't be glad to resolve this situation by allowing your relatives to break the lease.
