Are you saying that several different computers do not detect your external hard drive when it is plugged in?
If so, it sounds like the external has died.
What brand of external and how large? Seagate had a string of 1TB drives dying.

What plodr is asking is if the hard drive has been tested in OTHER computers? Is it ONE computer that the drive does not work in, or is it ANY computer that it will not work in?

Now I'm confused. You deleted files from RECYCLER, so that means the drive DID work on other machines?
