Is it just me, or is anyone else having problems with email notifications of responses to threads that you are subscribed to? I've tried going to user CP and setting to instant notification, but it seems to disappear when I change pages? :)

hmmm...I haven't noticed any problems, but I haven't had any subscribed threads for a week or so.

Did it just start for you? Maybe it's a cookie setting?

Don't know about him, but I have to log in everytime I come. It doesn't matter if I check the remember box, or even use Firefox.

    Laura,

It started about two weeks ago! :)

Personally, I haven't seen any issues. And usually I stay logged on, even over the weekend on this computer which was not in use. Other times, it seems I get logged off after some hours of inactivity:confused:confused
Doesn't bother me either way though.:wave

Just went and deleted my old cookie, logged in and out, and saved new cookie. Still no email notification, as I missed brandypeppy's reply. :)

May be a stupid question, but when you edit your options for instant email notifications in your control panel, are you clicking on save changes on the bottom of the page?
And then you go back to that page and your choice has been changed?:confused

    brandypeppy,

Just went into my user CP, and checked and instant notification was on. Checked threads and instant notification was off. Went into edit options and unchecked everything and saved changes. Rechecked everything and saved changes. Shut down computer and restarted. Logged into MG's and problem was still there. No instant notification even though it is checked in edit options.
Anything else that I might try? :)

That is a stumper Novice. Is there maybe a limitation to how many threads you can subscribe to? I frequently click the list all subscriptions tab and unsuscribe to anything more than a few days old.
Is it possible there is a limitation and you have met that?
I can't find anything else in the CP that would explain this. Maybe one of the admins will see this and jump in. It's hard to believe that any settings on your computer would affect settings in the CP.:confused:confused:wave

I just subscribed to this thread and it's definitely working for me. Have you tried it in another browser?

    LOL...gee thanks. :p

    LauraR,

Just tried in IE and the problem is still there! Any ideas? Even though instant notification is checked in edit options, it isn't showing up when I pull up my list of subscribed threads ( all are unchecked ), and I'm getting no email notification of replies. :)

Back on topic...I would definitely try a few browsers and see if the problem with the settings stays.

    brandypeppy,

Just checked and my email address is correct and the same that I've had for years. Tried both IE and Fire Fox with no difference. My checked options just don't seem to be applying to my subscribed threads. If you don't mind try sending me a PM, as I'm curious to see if that is working either. :)

hello, just a quick suggestion here. When you reply, do you see the box at the very bottom, that has a drop-down menu on it?
    Be sure it says,
There are several different options there. It is working for me too. I am still getting replies to dead threads, that newbies are replying too. LOL I hope this helps. I am using IE7 too. No problem filling the inbox...

I'm seeing you as definitely having your default to set to instant thread notification by email.

So you are saying that when you go into your profile in your options, you are seeing something different than that?

Just out of curiosity: Try changing your default to No notification. Then try to subscribe by going into this thread and subscribing by using the 'thread tools' up top.

    LauraR,

Just to clarify, all my settings are correct when I open edit options in my UserCP, and instant email notification is set to on. However if I open my list of subscribed threads the instant notification box is not checked, and I'm not getting email notification of replies. :)

Going to try your suggestion now!

    LauraR,

Just tried your suggestion and I got hung on this thread without being able to exit. I then went back into UserCP and reset my option to instant notification and saved changes. Then opened my subscribed threads and the instant notification feature wasn't checked.

    @TeeCee

Checked and made sure that instant notification was checked in the reply box.

    Anymore suggestions! :)

I'm really not sure what else you can try to be honest. The system is working as I tested it.

The fact that you got hung on the page is really strange.

Did you get it back to where it's checked as default?

The test PM did show when I logged back in, just didn't get an email notification of it! The only problem that I'm having is email notification.
Thanks for all your time and effort! :)

No problem. May be an issue with your email, or your AV or firewall. Did you change anything lately as far as they go. I know mine monitors my email.

  27. Novice

    Novice MajorGeek

Nothing has been changed, email client and ISP still the same. Avast is still the antivirus and Sygate is still the firewall. :)

    LauraR,

Just wanted to clear up a misconception of mine. My thread subscription has always been set to instant. When I open the list of my threads the instant feature is set, I was getting side tracked because there weren't any checks in the boxes to the far right. Just now noticed that you select threads with this feature. My bad.:-o

So my features are set correctly, just checked the firewall and AV, and MG's isn't blocked. So for some reason, I'm off the email list/server at MG's? :)

Any chance you could access your MG account from another computer and see if that still happens?
I routinely access mine from 4 different computers, but the behavior is always the same.
If it occurs from another machine, this would at least point to something in your MG profile, I think:confused
Or maybe in your email profile/server/settings, whatever.:confused
Wow, and you've even got the heavy hitters on this.:wave:wave

    Anyone with more ideas?

    @brandypeppy,
Accessing my account from another computer has never been an issue. I do this at work from time to time, and email is sent to my ISP. :)

The only other suggest I would have would be to use a different email addy and see if that works.

    TimW,

I set up a hotmail account to see if it would work, and it did! Thanks! Now any idea of why? I'm really curious as I could find nothing blocked anywhere on my end and my ISP lets facebook replies through, so surely Major Geeks wouldn't be considered spam on their part. Just wanted to let you know that your suggestion worked, but I have no idea of why! :confused

This is clearly a problem with the mail server of your ISP. From the server log:

    Code:
Mar 9 06:37:21 beta postfix/smtp[13819]: connect to ib1.charter.net[216.33.127.20]:25: Connection refused
    Mar 9 06:37:21 beta postfix/smtp[13817]: EE941168411F: to=<x.x@charter.net>, relay=none, delay=71898, delays=71898/0.01/0.06/0, dsn=4.4.1, status=deferred (connect to ib1.charter.net[216.33.127.20]:25: Connection refused)

    Philipp,

Thank you for you response. I just got through with a chat session with one of Charter's techs ( TTD Michael ) and found out why this is happening. Major Geeks is now considered a "Mass Mailer" by them and is being blocked at the server level at the ISP. Just wanted you to know in case any more Charter users experience the same problem that I had and the reason for it.:)

Nice to hear the mystery is solved, not so nice that they have classified MG as a spammer:major:major:boxing

    brandypeppy,

Yes it was nice to have an answer as to why I wasn't receiving any email from MG, but the reason sucked. I was chatting with a first line tech and had to give him almost too much information about myself before he gave me the explanation. Major Geeks is considered a mass mailer because they send multiple emails per hour. Didn't have time to go any further with the tech as he said that he couldn't unblock himself and something about relayed email no longer supported by Charter. I was almost late for work because of it.

I do plan to carry it further up the chain of command later in the week! ;)

My $.02 .... The only way (which I'm familiar with) MG could possibly be a "mass mailer" is the birthday and thread subscription emails (and a large number members using the Charter ISP). Every MG member using Charter as their ISP would have to go into User CP and modify their profile to mark birthday as "private" (assume the email wouldn't go out with this setting), the disable the option for administrator to send you emails (?), and modifying the Default Thread Subscription mode. But all this is a function of the vBulletin software - meaning all vBulletin software "owners" would fit into the Mass Mailer category.

Or am I missing something? Looks like going up the chain would be the better approach - maybe they can chat with MA or CP to clear things up.

    HI

Guessing that the ISPs and more so ISP email addys are going to end up this way as many ISPs are trying to protect their bandwidth and email services from spamming these days (I notice you set up a Hotmail account for notifications and thats a good idea, I have had Hotmail for my alerts and not issues for years)

Philipp with MA and CP will be the ones to deal with this, no doubt as soon as Philipp reads the Charter reply of yours Novice he will contact Tim and Jim. (just in case anyone didnt know Philipp is the coder and server geek for Majorgeeks, so is up the chain a tad)

  42. Novice

For whatever reason, Charter sent my 27 email notifications today that I hadn't received, but had read while logged into the forum. Most were replies to this thread. Some were five days old and were only received today.

So whether Charter decided that MG wasn't a mass mailer by itself or with help from Tim, Jim, or Philipp, they appear to have unblocked MG. Thanks if any of the previous mentioned had a hand in it.

Think that I'll keep the hotmail address for a while to make sure this doesn't happen again, and thanks to everyone that responded and helped.

There is one thing that bothers me about this however, how can an ISP that refuses connections have emails that they refused to receive or transmit? :)

  43. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Their email software can hold emails indefinitely even if you don't receive them, they get filtered out and are in "hold" so to speak until they decide to release them, which it seems they have done.

I know my works email filtering soft does this to weed out emails that dont conform to protocols, say racist, sexual, abusive language etc

Yes I would stick to the Hotmail account for the forum and glad this has resolved itself.

What happens most times is that a spammer is on the same subnet and they block the whole thing until they figure it out. So for example: Your ip is 123.456.789.123 they block 123.456.789.xxx.

Looks like that may have been the case here, but I am not 100% sure. They gave me an email to write to as there is no phone number to that dept.. But I never heard back.
