XP - SP3 Partial Install "Access is Denied"

I never did install SP3 (KB936929) for my IE6 with SP2, which is running on XP-Home. I am the sole user and the Admin. Now that Microsoft is doing away with support for IE6 I thought I'd install SP3 and then upgrade to IE7. Well, I can't even install SP3.

I see that many people have had problems installing SP3. I have done everything I can think of - all the fixes and tips, but I continue to get "Access is Denied" after the Wizard installs about 50% of the SP3 files...then it has to delete the new files and re-install the old ones and restart..and I'm back to square one again. I must have tried to intstall SP3 two dozen times.

I turned off my Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes
I stopped or disabled services that aren't needed
I rebooted for a fresh start
I first used Windows Update for the KB936929 SP3 install (Access Denied)
    I downloaded KB936929 (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe) as a stand-alone (316MB) and tried installing (Access Denied)
I used Dail-a-fix to repair WU (Windows Update) permissions and tried again (Access Denied)
I used KB949377 to install the Subinacl.exe file - ran the batch to reset the registry and file permissions (Access Denied)
I checked to see if I had MS XML 6.0, or MS Shared Computer Toolkit, or Remote Desktop Connection installed (Did Not)

On Windows Update History the KB936929 SP3 file shows it failed to install (numerous times!) - Error Code: 0x80070005
When I ran the Command check to find what failed it said INF Registry Failed - Install Error 0x5

I've run out of possible fixes and tips. In searching this problem I see that some people finally were able to install SP3 while others couldn't and just give up. I guess it all depends on each individual computer and its configuration, registry changes, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas that I haven't already tried to install KB936929 SP3 for XP-Home?

I also ran these DLLs in Start/Run:

    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

    --------------

I also downloaded and installed subinacl.exe and created a file named "reset.cmd" with the following registry lines in Notepad, and ran it:

    cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f

(Note: Since I'm using XP-Home I do not have "secedit". I have run the above both with, and without, the secedit line. See below)

    -------------

I have also tried resetting the operating system back to original installation default security settings, following these steps, but I have XP-Home that doesn't have secedit:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
    Type: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose , and then press ENTER.

    I've also seen problems with computers with Norton antivirus, even if turned off. What AV are you using, has your machine ever had Norton's on it. If unsure as to the latter, run the norton removal tool;
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

You can run this as a prophylactic measure even if you think Norton was never there, won't hurt anything to run.

    You could also try downloading the SP3 package from here;
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

Then with F8 boot into safe mode, and install the program WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe:wave:wave

I do have Norton AV, but had disabled it when trying to install SP3. With your suggestion I removed Norton AV and tried installing SP3 using the WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (316MB) as a stand-alone. Once again, it only installed about 50% of the new [SP3] files and then stopped. For whatever it's worth it stops installing at "MSGSLANG.DLL". Then I must click on OK to acknowledge that SP3 failed...and the old files are replaced, etc., etc. and reboots, bringing me back to square one.

I did not try installing SP3 using F8 in safe mode. However, I wouldn't think that will make any difference.

Do you have any other possible ideas? Thanks!

After unistalling Norton, did you run the tool I linked to.

Yes, installing in safe mode MIGHT work, I found that as a work around to your problem.:wave

Yes, I did run the Norton removal tool before trying to install SP3 again. I guess I didn't make myself clear.

I'll try installing SP3 using safe mode next.

    What brand is your computer?
I seem to recall that some computers with certain CPUs needed a fix from the manufacturer before SP3 could be installed. This was several years ago and my memory is not what it used to be but once I know your brand, (model would help too) I will look around.

Well, I tried in Safe Mode and it also failed at the same point.

Strange that in Safe Mode it wasn't able to backup seven (7) of some registery keys. Here's some examples that would not backup:

Service Pack 3 Setup could not backup Registry Key:

    HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00750. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00751. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\WinHttp.WinHttpRequest.5.1
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00865. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\SoftwareDistribution.WebControl
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg01348. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\SoftwareDistribution.WebControl
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg01349. 5:
    Access is denied

    And - WUClientUIPPlugin \reg1349 & 1352 & 1353

I guess since no backup was necessary all the above registry keys are still in my registry. Dunno!

Anyway, Safe Mode failed to install SP3...

I downloaded and ran the Windows Installer Update KB942288-v3-x86.exe, but SP3 reacted the same - 50% installed and then "Access is denied".

I also ran the M$ Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool to make sure everything was okay with my XP-Home and it was registered as genuine, which it was.

I'm wondering if my original XP-Home CD may be able to help in any way to repair whatever is wrong. I assume the problem is likely with a registry, but I'm not sure about that... I don't want to use the XP-Home CD to repair anything if that may cause me to lose anything on my computer.

    Any more ideas?

g'day again koot your problem seems to be with permissions.most likely your antivirus has changed them on some of your keys in the registry.try this click start then run type in regedit and press enter.
you will now be in the registry editor, locate the folder for hkey_ classes_root,right click and select permissions from the drop down menu.check and make sure that the administrator has full access also the same with the system entry.if they are already ticked untick them and retick them and press apply and allow it to reset the sub folders.
once complete exit back to desktop and reboot the computer then try the installation again.see if that works good luck.

    Information & Question...

For my HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (the entire tree) I have only one entry for permissions - it's titled "Everyone". Both boxes are checked allowing Full Control & Read.

I could not find "system entry" (I assume you mean within HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, but I'm not sure). However, I did find "System.EntryPointNotFoundException" within the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT tree. This had three entries: "Administrator [KOOT\Administrators]", "SYSTEM" & "Users [KOOT\Users]". All three of these entries had both boxes checked allowing Full Control & Read.

Should I only have one entry under permissions ("Everyone") for the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (the entire tree)?

Did I find the correct "systems entry" ("System.EntryPointNotFoundException") you also wanted me to look at? If not, where is it?

I think you may be on to something! My sole entry (under permission) for CLASSES_ROOT is "Everyone". By doing a little research I found that others have had the same problem...and that the change was likely made by a third-party site that used Java. I also learned that just adding Admin, System & User entries can create a major problem and crash the computer. Therefore, it is extremely important that the fix be done correctly.

Here is something else that I found, which makes me concerned about fixing it correctly:

    > Should I replace all inheritable permissions on all descendants from
    this
    > obect?

I would not recommend doing that, as I am not sure how those security
    settings would be applied.

I did dig up this information from MSDN though:

"If you write keys to a key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, the system stores
the information under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes. If you write
values to a key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and the key already exists
under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes, the system will store the
information there instead of under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes."

So, creating keys always goes to HKLM. However, writing values goes to
HKCU, iff the containing key exists in HKCU; otherwise, it goes to HKLM.

It doesn't talk about security, though, so I will keep looking.

I would recommend checking the security on your
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes keys to make sure they are all right.

And making sure they are not "empty".

They need different security settings, so don't apply the same security
    settings to both of them.

Any ideas on how to correctly fix this "Everyone" permission I have in my CLASSES_ROOT? Thanks!

Well, I'm confused. Now I've learned that some people only have "Everyone" as the sole entry under permissions (like I do). I checked my wife's PC, but hers has three or four entries including Administrator. Mine only has "Everyone". I guess System and Administrator is part of "Everyone". Dunno...

I guess my question [now] is - Is it okay to only have "Everyone" under permissions?

  17. Koot

    Koot Private E-2

I think I may have found the problem. My HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT user permission only had (past tense) "Everyone" as the sole user. ("Everyone" did have full control however.) But, all my other Registry HKEY hives have "Administrator", "SYSTEM" & "my name" - with full control.

As noted in a previous post, when I tried to install SP3 in Safe Mode it would not backup seven files (e.g. backing up: "HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00750. 5:" gave the "Access is denied" message). Well, when I was in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT tree I looked at these files and saw that they had no user names (e.g. Administrator, etc.), thus that's why they couldn't be backed up. I do not know why I did not get the same messages when the system backed up in regular mode - I only got the messages when backing up [during the SP3 install] in Safe Mode.

Anyway, seeing that I only had "Everyone" as the only user for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (and seven sub-keys that didn't have any user at all) it pretty much told me I had probably found my problem (hopefully because I haven't rebooted yet after I added "Administrator", "SYSTEM" & "my name" as users - all with full control). As an aside, some of the sub-keys within the hive had "Adminstrator", "SYSTEM" and "my name" as users, while some did not...

So, what I did was add "Administrator", "SYSTEM" and "my name" as users for CLASSES_ROOT and gave all three users Full Control, including sub-keys.

I right clicked on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, then clicked on "Permissions", then clicked on "Advanced" and then clicked on "Add". I typed "Administrator" and my Admin name popped into the frame and I selected to add it. I gave Full Control for the entire hive (includes all sub-keys) to the newly added Admin name, and clicked Apply and OK. I also added "SYSTEM" and "my name" as users and gave them Full Control also. For whatever it's worth, I noticed that the user name "Everyone" went away (disappeared) after I added the Administrator. I don't know what this means, but I was expecting for "Everyone" to remain in the user list. :confused

To confirm, I looked at a few of the tree registries and they all had the three newly added users I had just added. I also looked at a few of the registry keys that could not be backed-up in Safe Mode (as noted above) and they all had the added users.

Now, I am going to reboot and try to install Service Pack 3 for the zillionth time and pray it successfully installs. (I'll let you know "if" my PC doesn't crash and burn! rolleyes

    Wish me luck!!! :)

Just fixed similar problem on a customer's computer today. Well at least this part of it...

    HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00750. 5:
    Access is denied

Try to go back into SafeMode (since you seem to get this error in Safemode and not normal) and run the SubInACL again. Customer I helped was also running XP Home edition.

This is the reset.cmd I used.

I got the error when the SP3 installer was trying to backup the registry keys, and instead of canceling the installer, just let it sit there. I ran the subinacl and when it was finished I just hit Retry on the SP3 installer. It picked right back up where it left off and went through without any problems.

I don't think you need secedit for subinacl to run it. It worked for me, and I double checked that it was indeed on an XP HOME machine.

After running the SubInACL, DO NOT RESTART THE COMPUTER! Whatever changed the permissions settings to begin with, may change it back on the restart.

Well, that was a bust! Same ol' thing.

Now, in all my wisdom (and changes) I no longer have Windows Update...and I'm unable to re-register to get updates. Nor does the Windows Update service have a record of the KB updates, fixes, etc. I have installed. I still have a healthy list of KB fixes in my CP, but I'm dead in the water with Windows Update.
