I am getting ever so slightly ticked off with this now...

Some days it only happens occasionally causing only a minor annoyance, and other days it can happen 5 or 6 times in a row (usually when trying to flip between notepad back to the forum)

I go to hit the start button or click onto another window I have open and I get the "not responding" crap happen. I have to restart the program, only to have it happen again. I have not yet checked in the event viewer, I have researched this common problem but have not come up with any solutions.

Anyone can help I'd be grateful to, and if you need any more information just yell.

    Thanks
    Kes

When was the last time you had a good clean out Kestrel, defrag and so forth !
Give it a go you can't harm anything can you !

Also just found this Kestrel, i think its been copied initially from MS because theres a link at the bottom aswell for MS Support, basically what its saying is start your PC without all your other programs, then reboot to see what happens, similar to what you do with a browser without the apps to see whats causing the problem !

There are many steps which we could try lets try the basic step, we will have to place the computer in a clean boot state, to place the computer in a clean boot state follow the steps below:

Step 1: Perform a clean boot
Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.

    b. Click Start
, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

    c. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

    d. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.

    e. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Once you restart check if the issue is resolved in clean boot state.

If the issue does not occur in a clean boot state, follow the steps below to diagnose the program or startup item which is causing the issue.

Step 2: Enable half of the service

Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.
Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.
Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.
Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

Perform a clean boot by repeating step 1.
Click the Startup tab, and then click to select half of the check boxes in the Startup Item list.
Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

    Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration Utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

Step 7: Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

Click Start , type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Hope this helps you out Kestrel

It's a fairly new laptop Rusty and it's squeaky clean LOL

I'll follow these steps as soon as I have done a decent back up. Also would be interested to see if it does it in safe mode or not. It's just getting frustrating when I am trying to get work done.

I was going to suggest safe mode but thought you might have already tried that, thats why i gave you that post with the link attatched, try safe mode then see how it goes !

    Hi Emms

At times crashes with explorer.exe can come from the right click context menus that many apps install, specially if one app while works in say Vista, its right click menu option may not, pita at times.

Try this app ShellExView and disable any that are not Microsoft based apps, then reboot and see if it happens, if not then one of them is the cause and sorry to say its a case of enabling one at a time until you find the culprit.

If you filter by type is easier route to finding them, and the ones your after are Context Menu ones and anything not Microsoft.

This app is just easier than going through the HKCR shellex context menu handlers.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

As a follow-up: I've got a new work machine (Dell Inspiron, Vista Home 64-bit) that exhibits the same 'Explorer Not Responding' symptom, except that mine occurs when trying to open the Control Panel...it takes a couple of tries to restart Explorer, then everything's fine...

Since this is a new machine, when I get a chance I'll wipe it out out and start from scratch, see if it's a Vista problem or if it's caused by some 3rd-party software...

    Thanks Dave. :)

Should I do this before the steps Rusty posted?

I'll get back to the laptop tomorrow (damn thing doesn't work here as I need a vista compat modem LOL)

    Hi Emms

Could do this after to narrow it down more as even if you disable startups, not always going to disable a context menu addition, but in that article that Rusty posted I wouldnt follow the sections where it says enable half of the startups, do one at a time, enabling 4 or 5 say will only have you disabling all 4 or 5 to find the culprit as it could be one of them, one at a time is more accurate.

Modem? though where you are was broadband? should just be a case of plugging in an ethernet cable and off you go, but then dont know the full ins and outs.

    Well.... problem is solved....

    • First of all I simply used the computer for over an hour without having a browser open. The error did not occur.
    • Then tried FF safe mode.... again... no problems....
    • So... FF in regular mode... this time disabling ALL add ons
    • Again reanabling my most prized add ons (LOL) WOT and ABP.
    • No issues as yet and surfed for hours.

Do not know yet which add on is responsible but am sure glad it isnt any of the two aforementioned ones.

Ahhh too good to be true... I formatted the damn laptop due to not having time to troubleshoot my own probs and the error still occurs, so it has to be something to do with Firefox or one of its ad ons. Trying in FF safe mode with all add ons/themes and crap disabled.

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

Well this is very frustrating. sigh. it's STILL giving the error in firefox safe mode with all add ons disabled.

    Halo:

I tried tonight, but i cannot find a download link. Clicking the link I think I want takes me to another place where I think I can hit it and download but no :(

I am going to try browsing tomorrow in safe mode with networking and see what happens that way, but something tells me I'm going to be at it for ages trying to get to the bottom of this problem. I may as well screw around with non microsoft services as rusty suggested, after all it only takes 15 mins to wipe this thing and start over :(

You formatted, and have the same issue? Presumably you've reinstalled from a recovery partition?

Oh yes, and I havent yet tried surfing with IE instead of FF, if I did it was only for a while.... was also considering just buying win7 and slapping that on it .. but that's a last resort :-D

    Hi Emms

I would also try as you like Fx over IE, to uninstall your version of Fx and install the alpha version of Minefield, its next gen Firefox and very stable (I use this version alot, no mem holes as in 3.x and downside is not many add-ons work *ABP works ok, dunno on WoT*, but to me thats a bonus, plus it updates nightly)

    Download HERE

ShellExView link should be ok, just clicked it now.

How about instead of disabling add-ons you not install those add-ons at all?

You said you did a recovery to factory settings, but were you personal files still left behind? I ask this, because HP has something like this, but when you run it, it most of the time does not delete personal files and programs. If this is the case, you did not format your harddrive and you may still have a lingering issue.

If you do a restore to factory settings, everything is wiped, dont know of any factory restore that leaves personal folders intact.

Doesn't matter I found in the end whether I disable all add on's, just some, whether I use FF in safe mode or not... it STILL gives the error when I flip to a notepad file I have open, or anything else I have going.

By using another browser I do not have the problem.

Well, since using IE for the last few days I have only had the error twice. But now I know its not something firefox related. Arghhh the mystery remains.....

I have been watching this thread hoping you find an answer. My Windows Explorer does the same thing, especially when I try to move something on my desktop (ie. I have folders for my school classes and I put the power points on my desktop, then move them to the folder after I view them). When I try to drag them to the folder, Explorer always errors out (not responding) and I have to close it out, then works again.
My daughter also has trouble with Windows Explorer freezing up, so in the back of my mind, I really wonder what is going on.
I hope you find an answer to yours.

Sorry to hear you've been having the same troubles :( I have googled the hell out of it but the trouble is, narrowing down the cause could take a long long time, is no easy task, and will take an awful lot of troubleshooting. For instance I bit the bullet and wiped the laptop thinking that may be my easy option out (Only thing i use it for is doing the logs and I had all my study notes backed up to a million locations :-D)

But alas, that didn't help either, so I am lumbered with it. Are you on Vista too by any chance? I notice lots of little bugs in this OS when working on the desktop and in windows explorer. For instance from the day I had this machine, each time I save a file to the desktop, namely notepad files, in order to actually see them I have to refresh by hitting F5. Again, for something to dissappear after I delete it, I have to hit F5.... annoying, and I am *so* tempted to sacrifice this OS for windows 7. Or even stick XP on it because my God, at least it's stable!! ha ha

I am going to follow other advice that has been suggested here, and also TimW advised me to do a SFC Scannow, so I'll do that on Thursday when I get access to my laptop again and give that a whirl. :major

Yes, I am using Vista. This computer is almost two years old, though, and just recently started doing this. I did have to download some programs for school, so I am wondering if I have some compatibility issues with that. I do have to use them for now, so I might not know for sure if that is what is going on with mine until May when I have completed this semester and can uninstall the programs.
I do use Firefox and also have WOT.
I also have googled, but doesn't seem to be any concrete reason for it happening.

Kes, any errors or warnings in Event viewer. Specially around the time explorer fails.
    http://www.computerperformance.co.u....htm#Reasons_to_Master_the_Vista_Event_Viewer

    http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6108150.html

Just two random links to help navigate, I'm certain there are better sites.
The Tech gurus on MGs will help diagnose any issues listed. Event viewer errors always gave me a headache and I had to do a lot of searching on the net. That was On XP. Apparently Vista's Event viewer gives a lot more info - might be twice the head ache LOL

    Cheers..

Same here... the actual windows explorer not responding error only just started happening in the last hmm roughly few months tops. Prior to that I had no issue, and my laptop is also almost 2 years old.

Ahhh the event viewer, yes... I shall poke my head in there at some point and see what can be gleaned. :yum

But I do not have the OS CD.... so that option's out the window..oh joy

I think due to the absolute lack of time I have on my side to diagnose the problem, I am just going to go back to my Dad's house today and bring my XP CD when I come back on Thursday. Vista' is also out the window, i'm sick of it already.

And how will you use that Xp Cd on this LT?
Might be easier to dual boot Ubuntu.
    cheers..

I opted for windows 7 and scrapped Vista. Not because of the error I kept getting but life's a hell of alot easier :-D
