Looks like HW Cannuks is getting hammered at present, site down for me, but besides that as its not important is that I have read the story elsewhere, and WOW..... and they shipped alledged "demo" models! mmmmmm coverup excuse prehaps, but as Augie says guess their QA dept is sleeping on the job.

Ya, as if Intel would have typos on the box and 'forget' to change the bar code. At least newegg will replace/refund the chip.

I guess that is a plus to newegg and their customer service.

I have always found their customer service to be above average for an industry where the majority of vendors won't let you return a product once you've opened the package... never mind that you have to do that in order to find out the product is faulty!

In fact, I'd have been more surprised if they were not going to cover all expenses and replace or refund the CPUs for their customers. :)

Absolutely Mims! Even if this was a scam, Newegg has to make good. What, some 50K US out of their pockets, not a big deal for them considering the alternative.

I really feel sorry for the guy who posted on overclockers, this was going to be his first build in 8 years! Imagine the roller coaster ride he had! I hope NewEgg will make another 'mistake' and ship him an i7 Extreme 965!;):drool

It is actually possible that it was a mistake. All it takes is for someone to fat-finger a SKU when entering an order for processing. Seven steps down the line, Finished Goods has no idea what was requested, all they have is the documentation that they were provided, and what it tells them to package. So they package it and ship it, since it's not their place to question what they are asked to ship out.

For example, at my company when we place orders, we don't use the part numbers that are printed on the product. We use internal item numbers that are way shorter and easier to type in. Why use the 235-character code when you can use a 6-digit number instead? So number 123856 would be a 2GB DDR3-1066 desktop memory module. Number 123456 is a 2GB DDR2-1066 desktop memory module, and that's how mistakes happen. We actually once did ship one of our biggest resellers (not Newegg, but I can't say who) 50+ DDR2 kits when they had requested DDR3, because of a typo like that.

Since all documentation they had access to clearly stated "DDR3", the reseller discovered the mistake when confused and understandably upset customers contacted them and demanded to know why they'd been shipped incompatible memory for their new builds. The reseller took care of their customers and covered all their expenses, including giving the affected customers the much more expensive DDR3 parts for the cost of the DDR2 as a gesture and courtesy, all in an effort to restore the lost good-will.

My company lost a large amount of money on what we had to do to compensate the reseller and make things right by them, since they are our customer, and since they're a reseller we want them to continue to carry our brand.

So yeah, mistakes like these can happen. The reason they don't happen very often is because they end up being very expensive mistakes when all is said and done. If Intel operates like my employer does, there are a few people working for them who are neck-deep in smelly brown matter right now...

You are correct Mimsy, crap happens all the time. I used to work in inventory control, stockroom to planner to scheduler in an OEM computer fabricator so I know what can happen but in these days of bar codes and all...

What really bugs me is not the contents per se but the obvious typos on the box which even if they were a demo, I don't think Intel would let that kind of embarrassingly shoddy workmanship be approved by their QC department.

I can sympathize with your dilemma in SKU numbering, though I think there's more to the Intel story than that. We shall see.:)

All numeric SKU's should include a check digit to slow down on typos or better still use prime numbers to obviate them.
Or OEM barcodes or your own Barcodes.

Primes can be used with type of equipment to quickly value, or list, stock holdings of each piece of equipment, etc., when setup properly.

Sorry mate, you're way over my head on that one.;) I thought you meant using prime #'s as SKUs as a joke.:-o My apologies sir.

Even when just using straight prime numbers can reduce (but not eliminate) the chances of typos.

"The controversy surrounding Newegg's shipment of counterfeit Intel Core i7 920 processors to some customers has finally met its logical conclusion, with Newegg disposing facts and making great headway in resolving the issue with affected customers. In a statement to HardOCP.com, Newegg said that it is conducting a thorough investigation in collaboration with Intel and law-enforcement agencies, to get to the bottom of how counterfeit merchandise could get into its supply chain.

Another major revelation here is that Newegg named IPEX as the supplier behind the merchandise, and not another supplier called D&H Distributing, which the media was fairly confident in alleging for this controversy. The said company earlier issued cease and desist orders to those media sources for misinformation and wrongfully dragging it into the issue.

The supplier, IPEX, had initially told Newegg that it had accidentally shipped "demo boxes", a keyword Newegg adopted in its initial press statement and communications to affected customers. In course of time, it was found out that these so-called demo boxes indeed were counterfeits. Newegg has terminated its business relations with IPEX. Sections of the media which named D&H Distributing in the controversy tendered their apologies."

I think newegg handled it quite well. :)
