I'm having the same problem with this "we apologize" issue and the blue screen. My problem is I don't have the original XP CDs to do a restore or recovery. Does anyone know if I can purchase new CDs and fix this or does it have to be the originals?

    Thanks!

Can you boot into safe mode? What model/make of computer? There is a good chance you have a recovery partition.:wave:wave

Can't boot at all. I have an HP Pavilion that I bought in 2006.

Try tapping F11 at boot, that should get you to recovery.

You of course can always purchase the OS much to Microsoft's delight. :-D

What are the letters and numbers after Pavilion?
HP is pretty good about selling you disks. I've purchased several from them for various pieces of hardware.
I'll search once I know your exact model Pavilion.

Does tapping F11 get you to a menu to select "recovery". I see on some it may be F10.

And then maybe F8 will get you to options including "last known good configuration" or "safe mode with command prompt". :wave:wave

One of the guys I work with suggested copying my hard drive to another computer before attempting to restore, so I'm going to have him do that tomorrow. I'll let you know how it works. I really appreciate the help you've all given me.

Since there are actually 69 pavilion dv5000 variations listed, I chose the first dv5000CTO notebook.
    Start here

and you should be able to identify the three bits of information needed. Further down the page is lists how to purchase recovery disks.

This page also explains how to restore your computer from the hidden recovery partition
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...ory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=499849&lang=en
go to the section titled: Reinstall the operating system using the advanced recovery options and start by repeatedly tapping F11 as brandypeppy mentioned above.
