Blue Screen Of Death and then some...

So I am working on a PC let me first say looked like it was filled with enough dust and carpet fibers to build a house. (My first thought is something on the board overheated with it being so dirty, it was like hair balls falling out.)

So the computer has the blue screen of death error.. 0x0000007E on windows XP -- I then attempted to remove errors and viruses by taking out the hard drive - it works fine, I plug it back in same issue. So I decided to try to run the CD-ROM just to maybe run a repair on windows and it gives me a Diskette Drive 0 seek failure. The drive sounds like it spins and then nothing. A few clicks. I tried changing out the CD-ROM plugged in the second cd-rom it then tells me "Secondary drive 0 not found" I know the drive works I tested it just before plugging it in.

Let me know if someone has any idea what may cause this or this computer is even fixable. Thanks in advance.

So even if you leave the CD ROM out of the computer all together and just the HD is bluescreens after the XP splashscreen?

    Hi

Enter the BIOS at see if all drives optical and HDD are recognised ok, also maybe worth resting CMOS, so note down any specific settings in the BIOS and with PC off pop out the motherboard battery for 10mins then pop back in and check settings in the BIOS, if all ok and drives recognised, save and exit BIOS.

Maybe worth changing the IDE cables for known good ones.

Some options for the STOP error http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182

motc7 -- To Answer your question...

If I load up from just the HDD it doesn't even make it as far as the Windows Splash screen right after the bios loads up the Blue screen appears almost instantly.

Reseting my CMOS now lets see what happens....

Alright Changed out the IDE cables and still getting the same errors across the board. Also took care of resetting the CMOS. It runs setup and recognized the old CD-ROM but it still won't run. Still getting the Blue screen.

The only issue with Microsoft Blue Screen Troubleshooting is that it will assume you can atleast remove drivers or load into windows but without unplugging the hard drive and running it as a slave.. I can't complete most of those tasks.

    Hi,

Just a thought: When you cleaned the crude out of the box did you also scrape it out of the processor heatsink fins?

    Luck, Jim

An instant blue screen is typically not driver related. Its usually a problem with the drive itself. Like using a drive from another computer, or maybe even a ram error. I don't know how much ram you have in the system, but try halfing it. Pull out all the ram (use compressed air in the slots, and place the ram from slot two into slot one and try a boot like that. If that doesn't work try placing the original ram in the slot one back in slot one. Also in CMOS make sure all of the drives are set to AUTO and check your jumpers on the known good CD-ROM. Make sure they are the same as the one in the system.
