Greetings esteemed Major Geeks personnel and screaming geekomania fans. I was using cam unzip to password protect bank and credit card statements but its not working with vista and the new version is shareware. I is thinkin' about using tugzip but wondering if the newest version is fully compatible with vista since it was released in april '08. What say you all?

There is few programs that you can download and use for free.

    Izarc
    7Zip

These programs are free for so long and then you need to pay for the software.

    Winrar
    Winzip

A safer way of storing passwords etc is to use an encrypted container, rather than a password protected zipfile. I use Cryptainer LE and recommend it.

Maybe its time I started working with encryption. Awhile back I researched truecrypt but it seemed a bit excessive just to lockdown some small files. The cryptainer le utility seems simple and easy to use according to the website.Has anyone else used cryptainer le? I'd feel better running this program if it could be downloaded from the MG website but I don't see it anywhere.

    Hi

Yes I have used Cryptainer in Vista and Windows 7, both 64bit versions, but should have no issues if you are using 32bit Windows, it works well.

Yeah noticed we dont have this for download, must ping Tim (aka Major Attitude a co-owner of the site) and see about this.

Another option is TrueCrypt (free) and works well, its the option I use now to create a small encrypted partition for data like yours. The documentation for this app is superb and covers all you need to know HERE

Thanks for the great advice everyone. I'm gonna give cryptainer a try. If Halo uses it its gotta be good.
