My girlfriend noticed that when Windows XP boots up there is no music anymore. I've checked the sound settings on the Control Panel and that's fine and all of the .WAV files are there and set up correctly too. All my music files play perfectly so I'm a bit baffled. Does anyone have any suggestions?

O.k. just to be clear. When in the control panel for sounds, you can play each sound just fine from there?

Whenever you are into windows, do the other windows sounds play fine as well? Like popup message sounds, error sounds, etc?

What sound scheme is the computer using?
What is listed to play at windows startup?
    Does it play when tested?

None of the alert sounds actually work so it's not just the startup theme. When I'm in the Control Panel I can access all the sounds from there and play them ok.

The sound scheme is Windows Default and where it says Start Windows the file selected is Windows XP Startup. When I tested the WAV file it played fine so it's not damaged.

Thanks, you answered what I was going to ask next.

I located the windows wav files in C:\WINDOWS\Media
Then I looked at my startup programs and NvMediaCenter runs at startup. I assume this might be necessary to actually hear the windows sounds.
So I suggest looking to see if the soundcard program is set to run at startup.

When I click on the wav files, they do not play from the \Media folder because apparently they want WMP to run before the sounds play from there. I did not set up WMP - I don't want to break what is currently working for me.

NvMediaCenter is nothing to do with the sound. You have an Nvidia graphics card by the look of it and thats what that is for,
