Ok i bought a seagate 1 and 1/2 terrabyte hard drive and it failed after 7 months. So i am going to have to try and rma it. But in the mean time i will be with out a computer. So i want to buy a new one. But i went to newegg to see what was for sale and did some research on them it seems like most of the good hard drives that are more then 1 terrabyte are failing. I looked at some western digital models and the only one i saw that might be reliable was priced at $289 and i was looking to buy for around $100. I googled the models that were around this price range and with a 1tb capacity and the only one that i found was a hitachi model that would work but the customer feedback said it was noisy. Does anyone have any suggestions on where i can find a good one at a good price.

In thoery that HD is a much better deal, but i have heard much more horror stories from users who have used over 1TB Hard drives. Do some research and read plenty of reviews before you buy any PC Hardware.

Western Digital Caviar Black 1Tb are around $100 at Newegg.com. Retail I think Best Buy gets $120 for one.
Caviar Black models have a 5 year warranty, have a very good reputation for being reliable. Have 2 myself, no problems.

    EDIT- link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284 $100 & free shipping thru 3/31

I've heard too much about Seagate's firmware issues, but not major WD issues.

Ok ty for the replies but there is one thing i need to make clear and maybe i did not state it but both western digtial and seagate are having problems with drives over 1 tb. Thats what i was able to find when i googled them.

I was implying that all HDD's over 1TB generally have more issues than those that aren't.

Just to clarify, I did not say Seagate's were more reliable, and WD's were not.

I'm sorry if I suggested otherwise. I was just explaining why I suggested this one over Seagates. I bought one because the price was in my range and they didn't have a bad track record. The Seagate drive was cheaper but I passed on it as it's too early to tell if they got a handle on their problems. The others were a bit more than I wanted to spend and didn't seem to offer vastly superior quality.

I was reading on newegg on this one so far as far as i can see from the feed back it seems to have the best track record of the 1 tb or more drives. I guess i will try this one.

WARNING TO THOSE WHO PURCHASE A HARD DRIVE OVER 1 TB! do your research or you will be replacing your hard drive prematurely like i am after only 7 months of use :(

Did you get any warranty on the dead drive?

And that WD drive looks ok, as you said the reviews are mainly good ones.

Avoid Seagate 1TB and 1.5TB drives and avoid WD Green drives (stick to the Black WD). Those are the drives with the higher failure rates.

I have not tried yet. Cause i really want to get this comp up and running again before my vacation. After i do that then i will deal with it.

Ok, fair enough, does the old drive work at all? I doubt it does work, but If it does, try backing your important data up.

I am babying it atm but i can get it to work a bit and i don't have any important data just stuff i want to keep if i can. What i really wish i could do is reformat it before i send it out so that it does not have any trace of me on it. For privacy sake.
