So, I usually don't buy canned meats (I don't even like tuna too much) but sometimes I get an urge for the gross chopped canned nature of corned beef in a can. It's just not the same thing as actual corned beef. I mean, I like both, but I was raised by a mother that cooked every day and wouldn't buy canned anything (that, and fresh everything was readily available) so I get the urge to eat things she didn't let me have. I only buy this stuff maybe once a year and then POOF! I get a piece of plastic right in the middle of the 'loaf' of meat product.

I remember as a child, going to the American base 5 hours away from my home and being amazed by the weird variety of junk food there was. Colored cereal? Canned EVERYTHING? So I always wanted to try all of those things when we moved back to the States. I quickly got sick of most of those things, but since I still never really got corned beef in a can, I still crave it sometimes. But now I'm a bit grossed out. I don't mind organs, and other animal parts in my chopped up meat -- it reminds me of headcheese and capocollo, but plastic? Seriously?
I mean, I cook every day, so I usually can control what goes into my food, but what about those people who rely on prepared food? How of it is plastic? Or worse?
Has anyone else found weird stuff in their food?

I have small fingers so the size of the piece of plastic unrolled is about a dime or a penny. Maybe in between.

Shirts what? All I got was a cap from Newegg, but I don't really consider eggs canned meat.
Haha. I sent out a complaint. I just wonder how much plastic they're eating in Hawaii, with the SPAM and all...

Wow you got ripped off. No free t-shirt and plastic in the canned meat... What a lousy deal. Hope you have some good luck with your complaint though. They better send you a free t-shirt.

What I find strange is the USDA's acceptable amounts of things like rat hair etc, I don't believe plastic is among the list.

It's a pretty rare occurrence as nothing can detect plastic, it obviously entered the chain after grinding all the 'other parts'.:-D. Strange corrugations on it too, maybe they can identify where it came from in the plant. Strange to have something as flimsy as that in the production process.:confused

BTW, try a vacu-packed slab of real corned beef, now that is tasty with all the fixins'!:yum Quite inexpensive up here.

Well, how would you like to find a BUG in your skimmed milk powder.

I did. Thought at first it was a raisin til I saw the little legs.:eek.
At that time I had used about one third of the package.
Wonder how many eggs I swallowed ??

I returned the product to Walmart with the bug in a cello bag and got a refund but felt I should take it further so I emailed Walmart to make them aware of the situation and that the product was probably too long on the shelf so they should remove it. I also stated that I had kept a copy of the email in the event that I should become ill.

A few years ago there was an incident in some third world country concerning baby milk powder having bugs in it and some babies became ill and some died.

About one week later I got a call from an insurance adjuster asking for more details on behalf of Walmart . Seems they opened up a claim file. I expressed my concern about becoming ill so he asked how I was feeling now and took more details of my age and present state of my health etc etc.
Then he finished by asking me....

" And now, what can we do for you".

I asked him exactly what he meant but he was very vague in his reply. I left it at that and said I would be in touch.

Now how would you have responded to that question?

My response would have been, "In terms of a cash settlement, what is your offer and what are the conditions with that offer?" You might have got a couple of hundred bucks, maybe more but not much.

I once found what I thought was a sliver of bone in a piece of lunch meat (not uncommon), but on further inspection I determined it was a small rodent tooth . . . :(

Oh, well - whatcha gonna do! :-D Most people don't realise it, but the powers that be allow a certain level of "filth" in processed foods, as it would be impossible to eliminate all traces of rodents, their hair and droppings; bugs and bug parts, such as eggs, etc.

    Just more protein, folks! :p

An oppertunity to change lax standards & add your name to Food Safty Reform

It's been one year since nine people died and hundreds more were horribly sickened by a salmonella outbreak in peanut products. Yet we still have the same, outdated federal foods safety laws on our books -- and the owners of the Georgia plant who produced the tainted peanuts still haven't been held accountable.

In my area is kinda normal to find that stuff in canned goods we buy(and I try to shop at many different places) but still happens. 90% the time I open any tuna cans I get bones or something in it and there big bones. Also peas and green beans have many big steams but thats normal but just to say I get the stuff most of the time. Also I had some weird stuff. A funny thing recently was I went to walmart and put a bought a sausage when I got up to the register I notice the whole side was horrible caked with mold.:-D

@ silas, seems to me if your shopping at Walmart and finding things in your food that should not be there, then they (Walmart) are not selling very good products. :(

I myself am boycotting them right now but that's due to to their employee termination practices. :(

Bones in tuna, stems in vegetables...all things that are not only normal, but acceptable, and will not harm you unless you for some reason don't notice them and eat them (and even then they won't harm you unless they get caught in your throat rather than being swallowed). These things also have nothing whatsoever to do with where they are purchased, unless the brand you are buying is exclusive to that store (and also not packaged at a plant with several other brands).

I once found a worm in the middle of a cashew I'd just bitten into, and immediately called the company. They told me they were sorry for my discomfort and would mail me a coupon for a free bag of cashews. I told them that wasn't good enough, because I doubted I would be eating any, especially their brand, any time soon (it took me almost five years to be able to eat a cashew again, and to this day I split them open before putting them in my mouth). They responded that there wasn't anything further they could do for me, because worms are a fact of life when dealing with cashews, but did end up refunding my purchase price.

Plastic, on the other hand...not so much. But it also falls under the packaging thing I mentioned above. Most store brands are simply national brands with different labels on them, packaged in runs at the same facility.

Mold is a whole different thing, obviously. ;)

Walmart is a joke but it is cheaper on many food things. And since the economy is bad for me and my gf we go there. But I actually call walmart wallyworld :-D May I ask what they did to fire someone wrong or in a bad way? I know few people that work in my town and also in few towns away walmart as a supervisor and they hate walmart and there people high up.

It's that kind of thinking that damages the economy and put us in this mess in the first place.
Example: Maple Leaf foods in Canada, massive recall because of contamination (rightly so as it was listeria) but as a result all their prices have gone up, meaning less sales for them, meaning eventual loss of jobs, meaning less sales for shops who carry their food, knocking onto loss of jobs in stores.

Too many people think like you and are the reason things like insurance is so high.
"Oh I tripped on your step, I'm going to sue you for 3/4 of a million"
Mousy found a piece of plastic, 1 in 10,000,000 cans I reckon, so she deserves some form of compensation like vouchers or free products. She wasn't hurt so she doesn't need to sue them for millions nor force action to harm the company.
I've been buying canned corned beef my whole life and never once had an issue, she was just unlucky.

@Silas... WalMart isn't that much cheaper than most supermarkets, but they do import most of their products, once again not helping the economy. Since the world is currently in a mess financially we should all be trying to support home companies :)
Plus, if you read some of the reports about WalMarts food quality, you probably wouldn't buy it any more lol, you think thats good chicken in those nuggets? :-D

Back to the original topic, it reminds me of a friend a few years ago who found a castration ring in a can of dog food, kind of clarified whats in the dog food :-D
