I don't know all the laws that the USA has and I know I don't know much about what they ask the people to do for everything. But I was reading about the new health care plan that passed? People said that all americans in the USA have to have health care insurance(is this true)? Iam unemployed and so no job for insurance.. and I claim no unemployment. Right now I am mowing yards to try to pay what I can until I get a job. I read that this new law is says that if you do not get that (health) insurance or whatever it is they want you to get then you can be thrown in jail and pay a fine? SO basic questions without turning into war is.. is there a new law or something that was passed saying all americans have to get some new kind of insurance(iam guessing healthcare insurance)? Also will does it say you'll pay a fine or something or go to jail if you dont? What do I do? Sick of things now. Also another question if I get a job somewhere and get no medical plan while working there is that part of breaking this new law? Also I live in Illinois

That is the biggest reason I am against it. Last I heard, it was based on your gross income tax amount. 2.5% or so is what I read:

as they are getting legislation on a state level to make it your choice to have it or not:

First of all I believe all these horror stories you've mentioned are simply scare tactics trying to keep it from passing.
It still has some refining also it will take a few years to become fully implemented. There will be provisions for people who need immediate care and if a person can not afford it it will be waved.
Having everyone buy insurance is no different then what we already have with auto insurance. They're not going to send people to jail for being poor.

I don't understand why the US government can't join the rest of the civilised world and supply health care for it's people without financially crippling them.
I feel sorry for Americans in this respect, you guys are hammered with this health care stuff.

Both Canada and Britain have simple health care systems, Britains being the best financially speaking, both simply require you to pay a small % of your wages to go towards healthcare, both are around 5% I believe.... unless N.I. has gone up drastically in the last 5 years.

I'm going in for a hernia op next month, all the tests and exams and physicals I have had/having have not cost me a penny, nor have I had to fill out reems of insurance forms, actually I simply filled out forms asking my state of health , it's built into my income tax. I estimate my healthcare costs me approx $30-$50 per month. This does not include eye and dental care though.

Yeah, This could turn into a hot topic real fast, then it'll get locked down.

Regardless of what just passed, this is only the first step of many to provide socialized medical care, like most of the rest of the world. No matter what you think of it or the exact legislation, this was coming, inevitable, in one form or another.

I think the fight that will ensue will be over what form the socialized medicine will be in this country. Every country that has this has some problems with it, just like every country that doesn't have socialized medicine also has problems in delivering health care.

I don't particularly like this legislation, but, and I consider myself one of them, the conservatives had plenty of time and opportunity to fix our system, esp. when GW was riding high in his early years.

The US spends about 18% of its GDP on health care, countries with socialized programs are about 9%. And the increases have been out pacing inflation for decades. I remember saying 20 years ago that this was unsubstainable, but I didn't think it would take 20 years to address.

If your income puts you below the poverty level, you'll pay little or nothing for this. :wave:wave:wave

As it should be, I've just learnt that this new bill will supposedly cost around the same, maybe a little more than we pay here in Canada and in the UK.
Finally! not that it affects me in the slightest but it would be nice to see you guys getting good health care without having to sell your home to get it :)

Wouldn't be so bad if something small. I can see why they maybe want everyone with cheaper"affordable" insurance. But bills from a crappy small house will be more then my GF and I paychecks. And our paychecks ain't crappy for this area where she is working/I can be working. It is a higher up pay and good for around here... But in reality that pay isn't crap. I think USA should make a really good thing with healthcare for poor people (hell if they claim i am poor enough I shall say). And we can get it whenever.. but telling all americans to be forced or fine.. can be dumb... I mean the world does stuff to poor people who also have "issues" and if those people want they can blow up any moment and explode with anger.... and do harmful things to them or someone else...

That's not going to happen. That's what "The Public Option" was all about for people who couldn't afford (anything ) but that caused such a stir they had to put it aside. No one is going to be charged more then they can afford.
That's what this whole election, law is all about, Helping People!!!! They will have some sort of plan.

Bills for cheap crappy house here is 200 a month for house payment, 200+ for power, water is min. even if you don't use water its 60 bucks.. but anyways it will be around 150-200 water, cheap food a month 300 bucks, car insurance a month 120 bucks, gas for car to get to work 50 bucks, I won't include TV internet or anything.. what are we at? 1130.00 on my last job at 8 bucks an hour some weeks Id get 450 dollars every 2 weeks if blessed (my area this is good but not good for bills) most weeks they cut your hours because slow seasons for them.. so I can make as little as 150 every 2 weeks... but lets still say I still make even 450 for fun. so 900 dollars a month and I still can't afford it.. even if I didn't have tv and internet which those two are 75 bucks cable and 80 bucks internet.. here so.. I really don't see the dream they say in america.. where you should be having that nice house with white fence... Everything is raising in the world and paychecks are the same... I pretty much believe you have to live in a budget living apt in my area just because its pay.. where you get something free like here.. water...is with rent.

I know what your saying silas. It's always been hard enough starting out but these pass years has really put this country into a black hole. I have been through bad times in my life and it always turns around.
For every dollar you make there's someone trying to figure how to get two from you.
Education is so important. Learn as much as you can for as cheap as you can. Community collages although a lot are closing, offer classes for the price of books at times.
It will get better, honest :)

Yeah I think college people should be able to get into some sort of better job for obviously going to school. Personally my family never went to a college never could afford it and basically I am a factory man/warehouse type guy. Anyways I know many people including my relatives that has paid for 6 yrs got masters and 2 other degrees in college and owe over 80grand in loans and the sad thing is there just isn't nothing in my state or Iowa near by. My relatives(really smart) all A's even in college and they got many different kinds of degrees and they have moved to over 10 towns in the last 10 yrs when they graduated in 2000 to find job and they still can't find anything/get anything. The only job they had was a bank teller job.. which doesn't require a college degree. So basically they get education and never get to use it or get that job they think they are going to get around here. And I swear this large area around me and iowa is horrible for jobs. Like I said in my town either fast food or few factorys but the factorys I have worked at are 8 bucks an hour and during the year its dead season half the time so lack of money half of the year. Ive tried CAT and they they let most people go from there. I didn't get anything from them. But like I said my GF wants to go to school and for what she seen was cheaper and it came to an amount of 60grand and for 60 grand screw that you can put that towards a house instead.

I always been into houses and painting and decorating them. But the two reality places around here are"family" based and they hire family/family friends rarely. I thought about going into reality even with market sucking around here. But the times I went and spoke to them they told me not to count on it. Also I am in Illinois living for now. Also just thought Id add in amount fixing and working on cars for a job. we had about 4 or 5 big car dealerships here. And they are all gone cept 1 that cut there car lot over 3/4 of them are now gone. And the "little" car places that fixes/works on cars there are many and there family owned and not hiring for people. If I remember the only thing I ever seen in paper about them was a tire man.. putting on tires on rims. Economy took this town and anything around it down big time. Now nutrition.. I know nothing about what I could do with it.. maybe work at the gym as a instructor but like I said many people in this town are looking for jobs just like me and are suffering just like me. Most the time when I turned in apps or even went to temp places they said your on the list but over 600 people ahead of me for jobs.. and in this town that kinda like saying your screwed and on your own. Over yrs now and still no call saying they got something for me.

well thats the subsidy part of the bill, the public option would be run like a private company. This turned into medicare buy-in because we already have the infrastructure for medicare in place so we dont have to spend lots of $$ to start it up.

the idea is, this provides competition, the market forces competitors to become more efficient, something thats been lacking with all the monopolies.

I tried to stay as neutral as possible

10 THINGS EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HEALTH CARE REFORM

    1. Once reform is fully implemented, over 95% of Americans will have health insurance coverage, including 32 million who are currently uninsured.2

    2. Health insurance companies will no longer be allowed to deny people coverage because of preexisting conditions—or to drop coverage when people become sick.3

    3. Just like members of Congress, individuals and small businesses who can't afford to purchase insurance on their own will be able to pool together and choose from a variety of competing plans with lower premiums.4

    4. Reform will cut the federal budget deficit by $138 billion over the next ten years, and a whopping $1.2 trillion in the following ten years.5

    5. Health care will be more affordable for families and small businesses thanks to new tax credits, subsidies, and other assistance—paid for largely by taxing insurance companies, drug companies, and the very wealthiest Americans.6

    6. Seniors on Medicare will pay less for their prescription drugs because the legislation closes the "donut hole" gap in existing coverage.7

    7. By reducing health care costs for employers, reform will create or save more than 2.5 million jobs over the next decade.8

    8. Medicaid will be expanded to offer health insurance coverage to an additional 16 million low-income people.9

    9. Instead of losing coverage after they leave home or graduate from college, young adults will be able to remain on their families' insurance plans until age 26.10

    10. Community health centers would receive an additional $11 billion, doubling the number of patients who can be treated regardless of their insurance or ability to pay.11

It does indeed rely on your income, but for most people who work, it is required. For instance, if your single and make in more than $9,350 a year, you will be required to buy insurance of face a penalty of:
You can see here how the bill will affect people:
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/what-health-bill-means-for-you/

The auto insurance anaolgy just isn't quite fitting as if I don't buy car insurance nobody is going to send me a bill at the end of the year saying that I didn't buy it so pay this penalty, whereas this health care bill they will.

Of course, it will be at least three years (for some things, longer) before anything other than prohibiting children from being denied for pre-existing conditions actually takes effect...and everyone from the top down has said there will be changes to the bill before it actually goes into effect. Who knows what it will end up being by 2013.

So the health care bill ain't "actually going into" law or whatever it is till that late? I thought it was going to be quick of them to force everyone into health insurance.

This is why misinformation and publicity is not your friend, and neither are knee-jerk reactions to what you hear on TV without researching the facts. Obama hasn't even signed it into law yet, and it will probably have to go back to the House because the Senate made changes to the bill the House passed before it passed there. The bill itself is right around 500 pages, and those who are screaming about the sky falling (from either side) have obviously not read the whole thing.

Most of the changes in the existing bill won't take place until 2013-2014, with a (very) few exceptions. And even the things that will change immediately won't go into effect until this fall at the earliest.

I don't have time to look up the links on my ohmygod slow computer before I've got to run, but rather than looking at various news organizations' takes on it, try going directly to the federal government's site to see what it actually says. Anything else is going to be someone's interpretation, and it's been proven time and again that interpretation isn't fair or unbiased, nor often even based on facts. Just look at how many ways the exact same Bible is interpreted, for instance. ;)

I'm not claiming the new bill is good or bad, as I've not read it myself. I just know that when politicians and pundits get their panties in a twist over something, every single one of them is exaggerating (or flat-out lying) about whatever it is.

I've read part of it. Not all of it . . . but the 300 or so pages I waded through are a nightmare. It's ridiculously pedantic, and unnecessarily arcane in it's wordage.

You are right - I'm assuming the rest of this bill is as shot through with arcane legalize as what I tried to choke down. Odds are, it is . . . perhaps you can enlighten me if I am wrong. How much have you read? :)

I don't have to know how to sing to know when someone is doing it badly - nor do I have to read what amounts to War and Peace to take an educated guess that if a good percentage of a bill is written badly, then the rest probably is also . . .

Good article - the states have a good case . . . except it seems congress is not bound by any law or regulations anymore . . .

If ANY American isn't terrified by statements like this . . .

“We make up the rules as we go along." (Rep (D-FL) Alcee Hastings).

    . . . then I have little hope for them . . .

So, congress gets to make up the rules as they go along? Nancy Pelosi, when asked by a reporter what part of the United States Constitution gives congress the authority to pass such legislation, responded with, "Are you kidding me?"

Anybody else find this increasingly creepy?

  27. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

I haven't read any of it, but then I haven't expressed an opinion of it, either. ;) I was just wondering if you had, since by far the vast majority of those ranting about how awful it is as well as those trumpeting its salvation for us all have not.

As a rule, every single thing to come from Congress, regardless of which party submitted it or the subject it concerns, is "ridiculously pedantic, and unnecessarily arcane in it's wordage", as well as "shot through with arcane legalize". It's how government works. You should try having to proofread labour contracts...I've gotten so good at legalese it scares me sometimes. :)

And I find our government as a whole increasingly creepy. Both parties, both houses of Congress, the White House, and all the Washington attendants. If it was up to me, we'd sweep the lot of the into the gutter and start over with people who have never even visited there on a school field trip.

At this point, I really hope it is the salvation they promise. I just lost my workers comp appeal from an injury last November and have no insurance, which means I now get to enter the exciting world of applying for Social Security disability. I couldn't be more excited.

I for one do not understand all the fuss. We finally will be like a lot of other countries that have a similar form of universal health care. I have watched as my health insurance went from $285 PER YEAR to a level that I can no longer afford. I have watched our savings dwindled because of out of pocket medical costs. I have real worries about my childs' health. I am about to be on medicare, another federal program that I am grateful for. Yes, I paid money into the system all during my working years. The cost that is being bantered around, or rather the "threat" of having to purchase insurance, hasn't been disclosed as of yet. I am assuming that will be known once there are competitive "pools" that may compete with and drive down the big insurance companies prices. But a family of 4, with an income less than $88,000 ( !!! ) will be subsidized. In other words, the promise is that it will be "affordable". I have no idea what will be asked of my daughter who is a full time student and makes squat. She may be fully covered and completely subsidized. I will have to wait and see. But I don't for one see this as being anything other than a bold attempt to give everyone access to decent medical help without ruining their lives by the enormous current costs.

I thought that was what Clinton was trying to do and Obama promised he would do.

LOL I can relate. I've had occasion to study in depth some bills that have gone before the Indiana senate . . . and admittedly just a few Federal ones - but I've seen enough government legalese to form a firm opinion that the bill in question is worse then any I've ever waded through. I may be cynical, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional.

How many pages is the US Constitution? The guiding principles of our national government for the past 200+ years will fit in your pocket. There is no reason for this bill to be so huge and so ridiculously written except to obfuscate the issue.

Can I get an amen, brothers! I couldn't agree more. :)

Tim, the problem with rising healthcare in this country is due to torts. I.E. lawsuits where doctors are sued for millions. Tort reform needs to happen in this country now, but we aren't seeing it.

Having said that, if you think you cannot afford healthcare now, wait until you are forced to buy it, and let me tell you this. when insurance companies cannot deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions, their costs will skyrocket and that gets passed onto you.

  36. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

I am aware that we need tort reform. But to visit a doctor for a "consultation" that lasted less than 20 minutes and costs me $229!! How many auto mechanics get away with telling you they don;t know what is wrong with your car and then give you a bill for a few hundred dollars?
That is the idea of setting up all the uninsured into a "pool" which makes a very large "group insured" populace that will bring costs down, on top of the other reforms within this law. The insurance big wigs think it is their turn to receive huge salaries and benefits. They saw the big banks do it, so it's their turn. NOT.

The main point I want to restate, is that this is at last a step in the right direction. Just like Soc. Sec was. It's not going to be perfect right out of the gate. But it is a beginning. Something to help keep the millions of uninsured from financial ruin. After all, medical bills are the biggest reason people lose their homes or have to file bankruptcy.

No one said there wouldn't be a cost. There is a cost in all the countries that are already doing this. So what? The watch word is "affordable". Somehow, people seem to think they already know exactly how much it will cost them. I don't think they have a clue.....yet.

I guess I am just more mad about it cause I am freakin poor as dirt. And no jobs and bills are higher then paychecks. So adding this insurance that you have to pay for sure in heck ain't going to do me good. Also the Gov screws my family. You tell me how a family that has a huge house and takes crap loads of meds that if she had to pay for them they would cost over 3grand a month for. But Gov gives her 800 bucks a month to live off of. The Gov said shes not (poor enough) to get help or assitance. We have tried so many things and went so many places.. she cant get no food stamp, no help on bills, no heating or cooling help, no budge billing.. nothing! So house payment 200 bucks heating a month/cooling is 200..power is 180 bucks.. food.. cable...gas...insurance... water bill 150 bucks.. how does the Gov not say shes poor? Anyways to her Meds Medicare and medicade only cover certain things for her.. monthly shes always fighting to get her details about meds and fighting just to get help on meds monthly.. but infact shes been on they should have her info correct by now (been years). Many times medicare and medicade had refuse her due to there errors which is bs.. she had to pay cash which sure in hell cant happen.. so she only could take 3 meds (depression and etc.. main ones) but after 3 months medicare and medicade finally got her back up and running.. wtf is this Gov and medical places doing? I mean my family is in crisis and needs help and assistance and with this new healthcare plan they say it lower the bills for those things.. (believe it when I see it).. they say that and prices raised before!

sorry for rant just sucks being dirt poor and Gov and Medical places no care.. to help. I know many people claim they need help when not. But hell try living in a house and getting 800 bucks for disability.

just my .02, but, if it saves the government hundreds of billions of dollars, and employers money, and lead to lower insurance premiums, who will pay for it ? your head is in the sand if you think its all going to be peachy keen! several leading businesses including fedex , att have said it will cost them more than a 100 million per year,at a time when the country needs to create jobs, not destroy them. the congressional budget office said it will actually cost the federal government 239 million a year for the next 10 years.. its not wanted by the majority of American people, but, luckily for those in the minority , we live in a republic, not a democracy.
