It seems to me that this once excellent and still free system info program has seen it's day due to it's not being updated since Aug. 05.:( I wonder why folks are still recommending this 2.20 free version instead of the fairly up to date 5.30.1900 trial version instead.

The old one can't compete at all anymore for current machines. A case in point is my relatively aged Intel quad machine, it doesn't identify it as a quad in the summary, tells me that I have 3 out of 4 cores pinned, WRONG, doesn't know my mobo or BIOS etc.

Let's move on to recommending the newest trial offering then, it has a one month trial period which should be good enough for anyone and you might be able to get it for free too if you sign up for the spam shown on the site, I haven't tried it.

Many folks here either don't know their exact hardware, like new folks with pre-builts or have built their own machines and can rattle off the stats by heart, like me.;):-D Everest is still the best for me though the $35 price is a tad excessive for my needs. I'll stick to the trial.

For those that want to complete their offer for a full version, let us know what happens please and please create a new e-mail address first?;) I don't want to be blamed for any spam that may ensue.:-D

Thanks for the heads-up, but SIW tells me what I need to know.(and FREE to boot).

If it's free then why doesn't it work without accepting the Uniblue registry add-on? I'll be deleting that post haste.;) Other than that, it's a nice Everest styled sys info proggy without the [trial-blocked] entries of Everest. I still don't like the Uniblue need but I'll wait on making a judgment.;)

Thanks for the input as the old 2.20 Everest isn't the only game in town but for some obscure reason is so here.:confused

Ditto. I'll check out PC Wizard also.

I did like the way the Everest GUI was set up, though . . . I'm going to miss the program.

Can we get decent TEXT logs off these alternative apps? Many maybe great for competent enduser but if troubleshooting then a log and a good one is needed and Everest does list alot of key areas, pity it was never carried on in free form as you are right augie it doesnt list new hardware very well at all.

Speccy, not as far as I know, tried it a few months ago and it only saves in its own format, PC wizard and Belarc I will bow to others saying if this is a viable solution, the trial versions of Everest IIRC dont list everything but I may need to run one again on a differnet PC as my main one as a paid for version of Everest.

PC Wizard does allow the user to create logs in a number of formats, including text. Belarc does not though as far as I can see. All you can do is save the webpage it outputs to.

    Hi

What would a sample PC Wizard attached text file log look like? please if you have time attach one so that I could for one see if its data is useful for what is the main usage of logs, driver finding? cheers loads.

You've lost me Halo. Why use these programs for finding drivers when Device Manager has it all? Having said that, PC Wizard rarely shows anything on its Driver tab, and even when it does you can't save it as text. Not the right program for you for sure ;)

sorry to drudge up a month old post, but maybe this can be discussed further? I still prefer the older/free version. it may not identify # of cores, etc, but it will still properly show the name/series/type of proc. (ex. q6600, ...) And I don't like seeing [trial version] in the newer reports.

I, too, will check out the others, and maybe come up with another suggestion.

I apologize, as this thread is getting a little old now, but the topic is still interesting to me. I haven't been trolling the forums much recently, so if there's another topic or anything like that, I apologize. enought babbling.

attached is a the text output from pcwizard. It seems to be promising. My only gripe is that you are asked to install the ask.com toolbar.

Mainly due to if you dont have a driver installed for a missing device you're not going to know what it is for when looking in Device Manager (unless you talk the user through getting the HWIDs for the device and even with those codes it can be a PITA to find the correct driver), having sad that a log from the likes of Everest is not going to help either! in some cases.

The reason I ask for an Everest/Speccy log is due to making it as simple as possible to gain all the information I need to help the user in nearly one fell swoop, while it maybe easy for us to delve into what Device Manager is telling us, its not easy to via a forum post to step by step someone through Device Manager, whereas getting them to attach a log is simple for novice users.

Basically an Everest log will cover OS, hardware specs and model versions, some data down the very end of the log can hold clues as well as the HWIDs

@thesmokingun ~ cheers for attaching a sample log from PCWizard, not a bad listing, may try it ut in a few threads and see if its info helps, but the main answers we generally need from a user are PC make and model or Motherboard make and model, in most cases as that gives you the info needed to get correct drivers, then its a case of step by step install instructions.
