I have never been diagnosed with insomnia, nor have I ever experienced a problem with not being able to sleep more than just one night. however, this week, I have maybe a total of 15 hours of sleep for the week. This of course is not enough.

I cannot imagine what is keeping me up. I fall asleep only to wake up 1-2 hours later. Then throughout the day, I'm sleepy, drifting off, and exhausted.

    Ideas?

Do you leave your PC on overnight?

If so, is it loud enough to wake you?

Do you go to sleep with music on, as this can cause problems relating to "Junk" sleep. (basically, you sleep, but VERY VERY lightly, and the slightest noise can wake you).

    ;)

Temporary insomnia can be caused from anything like a change of diet to a sudden increase in work stress of other conditions. If you're used to sharing your bed with someone (partner, spouse, dog, whoever), and that someone leaves town for a week, that can be all it takes.

So what's changed in your life this week? Whatever it is, it's probably what is causing the lack of sleep now. :)

    Ditto on that thought.

If you are like most of us, you are probably on your computer at night also. Try doing something such as reading and make sure you don't have any caffeine after about 5pm or so.

But as Mimsy said, the cause is probably stress related or some change. Thinking about it can also make it worse.

I ve always been worried to get tested to see if I had that sleeping problem. Pretty sure I got something. Some basics to remember is (for some like myself I go to sleep with tv on just to hear noise I like it, also I love having a fan on my face while sleeping)comforts me. But anyways some basics are no soda or food before bed an hour or so before stop doing so. I have problem my whole life since I can remember.. Id can stay up like right now its only my 2cd day but I can stay up for 3-4 days with no sleep at all. And I can lay in bed for hours and never go to sleep or get tired. People say turn tv off and etc.. I turn TV off at 10pm laid in the dark till 6am and just got up and watched the news.. Useless for me to show them more time. But when I do sleep I sleep heaviest Ive seen/nor my family/parents/friends. I actually hate sleeping in and being a heavy sleeper because it scares me when I get a family(kids) and I wont be able to wake up and stuff..I rely on people to wake me up(no alarms work) as a kid in school I had 4 alarms all kinds full blast next to my ears and even installed speaker system next to my bed and still not a budge.. Most of my time in school my mother would wake up at 6am at latest and start waking me up (school 830) and Id barely make it up in time to get a shower and get there in time(school close by house). So bout 2 hours each day waking me up tactics.. She use to spray me with water (water gun or whatever) she blow whistles she pull sheets off and blow fan on me if cold outside.. Basically she had to shake me until I got up. And I also got a problem where I wake up(but I dont remember) I dont remember convos I had with my mom as kid and my gf at this time. And people I know. I actually fell bad because they said I hit them with remote and throw things at them. And call them fat bitches and etc.. which I would never say to someone. GF thought she could handle me and didnt take it serious later on in relationship she said she cant do it.. And my whole life I had to settle for second shift jobs... I could never do a 1st shift even if I had a million bucks.

I drink as many Cokes before bed as I did before having problems. i.e. Drinking Coke before bed or eating didn't bother me and I slept fine.

Not feeling stressed at work, which is surprising since I work in IT, in an Accounting Firm during tax season. lol

Even last night with the wife gone, and me totally exhausted, I could not sleep whatsoever!

This is one of those things where the more you think about it the worse it gets.
Subconciously you are concerned you're going to wake up , so you do.

Best advise is to go see a doctor but try to avoid sleeping pills if you can.
Drink warm milk before bed and don't have caffine after 5pm
Eat foods with low sugar content.
Avoid ibuprofen in the evening or any form of drug with caffine/stimulants in it.

Make sure you are relaxed before going to bed and make sure you are comfortable in bed.

Hope you get it sorted soon :)

This isn't some weird new age crap is it? lol

I took vicodin the other night, 3 of them and that should have knocked me out, but it didn't.

I'm not comfortable come to think of it. Don't know why.

Save the universe? ahhh yes....got it...

Nope, proven fact. The harder you try to sleep, the more you stress out your mind, which in turn makes it harder for it to relax, "go to sleep mode", and fall asleep.

I personally always sleep better if my room is cool, than if it is hot. Look at the temperature in your house, what the AC is set for, and maybe experiment with lighter or heavier blankets.

Replace all bed linens with clean ones, especially the pillow case, and if you can, switch to a new pillow that supports the neck the way it wants to, so you can relax those muscles better. How tense your neck is while sleeping is a huge factor in how restful that sleep is.

If all else fails, go to the gym and wear yourself out. Being physically tired always helps. ;)

Really, Laura is spot on about reading in bed. It's a boon for getting me over. If you don't read in bed, try it.
Good luck finding your sleepy place again.

Yep. I read every night and fall asleep. Just make sure whatever you do read isn't too good. LOL

Good luck. It's miserable when you can fall asleep.

It really does make it worse to think about it.

sleeplessness is a fact of life for me, try to avoid naps, never go to bed early, and unfortunately, try to sleep alone. going to sleep with the tv on is ok if you use a sleep timer. as suggested, working out and reading helps as well, tiring the mind and body.
Alcohol will help you sleep, but it isn't 'good' sleep, and you awaken feeling tired.

Well, Saturday after getting off here, I went to the church and worked outside until nearly 10 pm. I was worn out.

I SLEPT THE ENTIRE NIGHT!!! wahoo!

However, I could have slept another 7 hours. Last night, maybe 3.5 hours of sleep. ffs.

If it continues and nights are not good sleep and you are tired all the time, need to seek professional help as many symptoms can cause sleepless nights, from just tired, sleep apnea to cancer, if it continues you never know the cause.

I dont sleep well and no amount of sleep makes me feel 100% fit and well (need 6mths out of work with rest to be honest, but that not pay the bills), but I found out I suffer from a mild case of CFS, came out of a virus and basically overwork, took near 2yrs to diagnose and a few good friends to pester, cat scratch me into seeking more medical help on the cause.

Glad you got some sleep. :) Hopefully you can get back into a routine. Do the church and working outside every day until you do, maybe.

Didn't know there was such a thing.

Well, get this. Even after working my tail end off last night for Passover, which I didn't get to bed until after 1am, I still woke up several times last night.

The more you stress about it the more it will happen.

    Thats helpful isn't it :-D

I can only suggest you go to someone who knows about this kind of thing, a doctor or specialist, yo'd probably be better off with a clinic type deal or therapist to actually fix it, as opposed to most doctors who will just give you sleeping pills.

I work at night by choice, and from time to time I have problems sleeping during the day. I try and avoid taking anything, but it it gets bad I will take 3mg of melatonin which is a natural substance your body produces and helps in falling asleep.

At times during really tough weeks, or when I am away from home (I have trouble sleeping in strange beds . . . guess I'm getting old) I'll take some diphenhydramine. It's a common antihistamine component in many allergy medications, and is often used as an anti-anxiety drug. Usually this with the melatonin will put me out.

Sometimes even that doesn't work. There are times when (and this is the only way I can describe it) I just can't seem to turn my brain off . . . I just can't stop thinking. I know that sounds weird. When that happens all I can do is take a walk, work out, read a book, or do anything that will help break my train of thought. Sometimes it works, sometime it doesn't.

I came home from church last night, ate and I went straight to bed. It was nearing midnight.

I slept the entire night and feel like a million dollars!

Excellent! Glad to hear you at least got 1 good night.

With a little lck thats the end of it, maybe it was just a freaky thing temporarily or some sort of rare bug.

Or maybe it was going to church.....that would send me to sleep :-D (j/k, no offense to those who enjoy it)
