    Hey guys,

I'v just bought a new ATI HD 5850, which i am so pleased with.:-D

Now when i first installed the card the system booted i installed the drivers (v10.3) no problem. Once they installed i re-booted and as windows loaded i got a BSOD. I decided to try once more to boot into normal mode and success the system booted fine.

Once im in, im having no trouble at all. The sytem runs really well. Then the next time i reboot i go through the whole proccess again.

Somethings not quite right here, any help would be greatly aprecated.

    System specs:
    • Intel Core 2 Quad - Q8300
    • Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L (I know :-o)
    • 4Gb PC1600 RAM
    • ATI Radeon HD 5850 (Power Cooler)
    • OCZ 600MXSP 600w PSU
    • Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Fully up to date)
note: All components are curently at stock speeds.

Please also find attached four .dmp files from the crashes. If you need anything else just ask.

    Thanks again for your time.

Hi, by experience I know that those 5xxx cards are reaaaaally fastidious about the rest of the components.. it's like: "Hey, I'm the boss here, obey my needs" ...

I would absolutly recommend new mo/bo and a couple of (ALEAST) ddr2 RAM's .. the PSU and everything else looks great, you even have the same CPU as myself :)
I'm running a ASUS Striker II NSE DDR3 motherboard
with PC3-12800 1600Mhz RAM's =) that might be something to consider, I also have win 7 x64. I just think your mo/bo might be bottlenecking the whole computer..

And just for the record, I would suggest something nVidia-ish gfx, since you're running a Gigabyte mo/bo. ATI, as I said, is really needy, and doesn't quite get along with intel etc. =)

Yep, that motherboard is, well, :crap :-D

Upgrade that, to a DDR3 MB if you can, and some DDR3 (1333Mhz or higher modules). Then you should be good to go.

    Thanks for the input guys,

I know the mobo is crap but im not sure thats the issue here. The system runs really well once up. Bad Company 2 plays at highest graphics at 1680 x 1050, without so much as a stutter.

The issue only happens at startup, once, then she boots fine. As for buying a new one, I'v decided the next mobo i spend some proper money on will be a 1366, which will also ofc mean DDR3 memory. Slap in an i7 and I'm sure it will resolve the issue.

Unfortunally thats a few paydays away. :cry Untill then I just need to get to the bottom of this. Its just so annoying.

But the MB could be the very problem.

You could try running memtest for an hour, just to make sure?

It's nice to another manc on the forums!

Yeah, it could as well be the mo/bo, since it only happens once, it could be that the motherboard isn't really sure if it really supports the gfx or not..

I just thought of something.. is it an AGP or PCI-E?

My old ATI 5850 was AGP, that totally screwed everything up :-D

The more i think about this the more i feel like its a software/windows issue. The mobo is cheap but that only really reflects the features of the board.

What it does it does well, it meets the min req for the card (which is basicly just a PCI-E x16 slot).

Burrell im gonna try running mem test tonight and see what that says, but again it just dosent seem like a memory issue.

I'm going to try re posting this in the software forum and se what they think.

    Thanks for the input guys
