So, I'm looking for suggestions. I have a lot of time to kill (a lot if time) and am looking for something to fill it with. I absolutely love RPGs, it's almost to the point that I can't seem to really get into any other genre. :/ Something about 'em.

Thing is, is that I'm all out of ideas on what to try.

Here's a short summation of what I've played - sorted by "like", and "not like" to help (the hypothetical) you.

I'm looking for pretty much anything with a decent emulator (excluding the PS2), NDS, XBox, or PC.

[PC Specs: Xeon Quad Core 3.06, 1GB DDR-2 SDRAM, 3GB RAM, Windows XP]

    --- LIKE!

    • World of Warcraft
    • Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited
    • Star Ocean II - The Second Story (PS1)
    • Seiken Dentsu 3 (SNES)
    • Diablo II
    • Fallout 2
    • Oblivion
    • Morrowind
    • Tales of Phantasia (SNES)
    • Nostalgia (NDS)
    • Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
    • Dragon Quest (Any)
    • Neverwinter Nights

I've played everything that can even remotely be described as an RPG on the SNES, and Genesis ...

    --- NO LIKE!

    • La Tale
    • Free Realms
    • Golden Sun (GBA)
    • Gothic III
    • The Witcher (is this wrong of me?)
    • Knights in the Nightmare (NDS)
    • The World Ends with You
    • Etrian Odyssey II - Heroes of Lagaard (NDS)
    • Neverwinter Nights II

I think my problem with the NDS is that I'm lazy, and I <3 console-style RPGs. Down with the stylus! -effectively rallies no one-

So yeah, ... I hope that's enough information (without being too much) and some people(s) are willing to help out. Thanks in advance! :D

Uh oh, there appears to be something wrong with your post, people are gonna shout at you :-D

Well, I'm not a huge RPG'er but based on your "Like" list I would certainly say ...

    Fallout 3
    Dragon Age: Origins

Also definitely worth a look is Mass Effect 2, it is an RPG but it's a different style of RPG, it basically incorperates a 3rd person shooter element which works fantastically. I personally thought it was awesome, the first Mass Effect was apparently great too but had a lot of little niggles and flaws, although the story does follow first to second.

Of course there are the Final Fantasy's as well, I personally liked Viii and X.

If you're going to recommend Mass Effect 2, you should probably recommend playing Mass Effect first... ;) The sequel continues the story from the first.

    Recommendations:
Knights of the Old Republic, 1 and 2
The Older Dragon Quest games that were just released for DS.
Planescape:Torment (old and different... people either love it or hate it)
    Baldur's Gate, of course

    Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (2004) was alot of fun;

    Dragon Age I'm playing right now and it is turning out to be really good;

    Knights of the Old Republic I & II are must plays if you never have;

Fallout 3, Dreamfall, and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey have all been recommended to me, and are on the to-be-played list.

lots of folks suggest fallout 3 and nobody plugs fallout or fallout 2? come on folks they're great games. yeah, they're old and not that pretty, but still amazing story in a great setting. stay away from fallout tactics brotherhood of steel though, its terrible. oh wait, ya've played fallout 2. ya gotta play fallout ya just gotta :-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D

and if ya just love an amazing story, these aren't really RPGs in the classic menu sense but indigo prophecy, condemned: criminal origins 1 & 2, and the silent hill series are a-bleeping-mazing

edit: and good luck getting it to run, but the predecessor to morrowind and oblivion, daggerfall is pretty hardcore oldschool

AH! Our puppy growing up was named "Mimsy!" <3 After all, all mimsy were the borogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe.

Thank you everyone, for all of your suggestions! ^^

I never bothered with looking into any of the Knights of the Republic - I had assumed because it was Star Wars, it'd be ... you know. :tired

Wasn't sure if there had been some new Dragon Quest releases, based on what Mimsy had said so I looked it up - I've played Dragon Quest IV, V and I'm really stoked for VI and IX (ones TBA while the other won't be released until 2010 Q3.)

Forgot to mention it, but I had played Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and yeah - it was nifty fun. I got it set up with a controller and it made a good game even better.

I tried getting into the original Fallout, and I'm not sure whether it's because I'm too accustomed to having games hold my hand to a certain point, or just sheer laziness, but I couldn't really get into it. Also, you're right - Brotherhood of Steel was /horrible/.

    --- UNSURE IF LIKE!
    • Knights of the Old Republic 1 + 2
    • Mass Effect 1 + 2
    • Dragon Age: Origins
    • Fallout 3
    • Dreamfall 1 + 2 (I had never heard of this before.)
    • Indigo Prophecy (another new one to me)

Groovy. That's a decent list to get me started ... thank you again. You're all fantastical.

gggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...... must.... resist..... urge.... to..... rage...... at knocking of star wars..... arrrrrgh.... okay, whew...

while i am a star wars fan (massive understatement) many will tell ya KOTOR and KOTOR II they're better (storyline) than most of the movies and they're on a stripped D20 system, which if you've done any table-top you'll be instantly familiar with.

To be fair, it isn't so much that I dislike Star Wars (as a concept), but I've tried a few of their other games ... and I gotta say, I wasn't entirely impressed. I don't know whether it's because I'm not interested in the mythos, or what - but I couldn't ever get into them.

However, if the game mechanics themselves make a decent (good) game, then things like a storyline become irrelevant. :p Take Sailor Moon: Another Story (SNES RPG) ... even though I read EVERYTHING, I still had no idea what was going on. I'd recommend it, though, because the game itself is actually quite fun.

The KotOR games are not anything like any other starwars game I have ever played. I am a big, big fan of starwars, and that being said, I still don't like the vast majority of starwars games out there. Seriously the last one I really enjoyed before KotOR was X-Wing vs Tiefighter and that was what, mid '90s?

KotOR has a great storyline, excellent character development and player involvement, the flexibility to change the course of the game and the characters around you via your choice of interaction, and an awesome mechanic system that lets you really get into 'physically' being one :major jedi.

Play it. It's like a $10 dl on steam or the same price wherever else you can find it if you don't like steam. Definitely worth a try!

I gotta second scooby here, he says it perfectly. only other starwars games i've enjoyed are a couple of the rouge squadron flight sims similar to X-Wing vs Tiefighter (which i sadly never got to try out :( ).

    I did! Kind of :p

Just for clarification on that point, I said the stories do follow one to the other but I kind of meant the story of the second one works very clearly and well on it's own, it was aparently intended like that because the errors that ME had it put a lot of people off, including me, but the second one works fantastically. So basically what I could have just said is, you don't NEED to have played the first to nderstand the second :)

As for the KotOR star wars games, I've had these recommended to me a few times and mst admit I'm relctant de to playing several SW games like the Xwing fighter and laser'em up slasher type platform games. But I'm slowly starting to think about giving it a shot :-D

    Beware the Jabberwock. Beware.

First off: First KotOR, Dragon Age and both Mass Effect have pretty much the same development teams as Neverwinter Nights. Most importantly, a lot of the writers are the same, and the voice acting is just outstanding.

If you want to play some of these "older" PC games on Vista, www.goodoldgames.com sells them DRM-free, at very decent prices, and guaranteed compatible with the new OSes. They are working on adding 7-compatibility, and are telling members that they will announce it as soon as it's available. The community on that site has a list of tested to work in Win7 on their forum as well. :) The recommended Dreamfall games are available there, for example.

OH! I almost forgot! Jade Empire! Bioware's best unknown sleeper hit ever! There needs to be more epic RPGs in non-traditional settings... this one is based on mythological China, and play as a martial arts wielding monk, fighting the curse on the land that prevents the spirits of any who die from passing on to the after-life. Instead they hang around where they died, frustrated and angry, and eventually go homicidally insane. It is awesome. Absolutely worth getting.

    I love Jade Empire. :cloud9

Xwing vs Tiefighter is a good bit different from what I have seen of most modern starwars games too... I'm talking 1994 or '95 here iirc, and it was the type where you would log into a server and start a game against others that was almost as much strategy in selecting ships and weapons as it was hand-eye coordination in the fighting.

KotOR on the other hand is unlike any other starwars game I have ever played, far more similar to tabletop roleplaying than any type of button mashing laser frag.

Mimsy, Jade Empire? You have me looking up another game now lol... thanks!

    You're very welcome. :)

You're not on Win7, are you? It takes a little bit of work to make it work in that OS.

I am actually, ya- 32bit pro. I'll check it out and if I decide to give it a try (likely), then I'll get back to you on fixes if you don't mind, which will be added to the list right by Torment mods lol... I'm into Dragonage atm and I just confuse myself if I get more than one rpg going at a time!

Nice, ... thank you again - you peoples are great. Also, just so put it out there - I started playing Titan Quest: The Immortal Throne while waiting for responses, and I gotta say ... it's pretty good.

Visually it reminds me more of Nox (I loved that game) than Diablo II (though you tragically can't jump.) The play style is rather generic and linear, but the character customization more than makes up for that - making each time through a little bit different. (I have three characters I'm juggling. I'm too ADD, I want to try EVERYTHING. :/)

Speaking of games that feel like Diablo II, did you get into the Mytheon Closed Beta?

The team behind Mythos shut down that game and started Mytheon instead. Looks outstanding, especially for a f2p MMORPG with hackety-slash elements, and is announced for Q4 2010. Closed Beta launched about a month or so ago.

First i want to say that both KOTR are unlike any previous star wars games. They are rpg's in the truest sense. You got levels, char development, skills to train etc...

Second theres alot of good rpgs out there. You might try kings bounty which is one you can download off the net. it was a good one and a long one. Its something like heroes of might and magic except you dont have different scenerios just one long story with different areas. Theres more but atm i cant think of them.

Actually, I've never even heard of that. I shall look it up. For want of MMO, I've started playing World of Warcraft again - I haven't played since Wrath of the Lich King was released, so it's interesting seeing what's changed. I had to start a new character 'cuz I had no idea how to play my old one. <insert tragic sigh here>

@geekahertz: Heh, claim there's a lot of good RPGs, but you can only come up with one?! >< FOR SHAME! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look it up. :D

Kind of like Mythos... it reminds me of Guild Wars but with better story. If you're interested, I think mmosite and a few others still have beta keys to give away. FAir warning: It's in closed beta. Expect glitches.
