    Not that I know of.

Thinking there is or that it's the government you should be concerned with is naive if you ask me.

The only way the internet is private is if you stay off of it.

So basically there is not a way to actually send a private message in the hold World Wide Web.

Honestly, no I do not. Again, this has nothing to do with government either. People always like to talk about the horrible government and invasion of our privacy. You, me and everyone else put it all out there for anyone to see.

Here is a thread that darlene1029 posted today: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=213391

Plug your name in and see what comes up. While a lot is wrong, a lot is right. They get all that info from everything you do online.

don't get me twisted I have nothing against Government it is just in my opinion that we deserve more privacy but after all as you stated it we are the ones who put the information out there for them to hide , Is like throwing meat to hungry lions and expect them not to eat it But what if one day the Gov goes corrupt and we cant united due to the control they have over the Internet and cell phones. them what would we do them ? when the moment in that we actually NEED privacy comes around if it ever comes Around.

Okay, this is where you lost me. You've watched too many bad Sandra Bullock movies.

No one has control over the internet. The government can barely hold Congress together, but you believe them to have control over the world wide web? Please. Whatever you're smoking, it's time to quit.

the right to invade our privacy I think that should be considered a type of controland I don't smoke at all.

I personally think there's some paranoia going on about the privacy thing, I just went to Darlene's link and only found my email addy because I've given it to many different websites so of course it's there, the location was pretty far off too, over 3 hours away, didn't find my name or phone number.

Privacy online is what you make it, if you don't want the online community to know who you are then never type who you are or where you live. Simple as that.

Unfortunately things like Facebook and MSN are the main contributers to lack of online privacy because they say it's safe and people will happily put all their info up there along with pictres of their kids and notifications of where they live, when they will be home, what car they drive and where they work/school.
No website is safe, any site/database can be hacked/cracked etc
Any open public site can be abused.

The internet is a wonderful source of info and communication but as with anything wonderful there are many who will happily abuse it for their own gains.

I agree, but tell that to a website hosted in Russia or China or pretty much anywhere outside of your country. Your governement only has control over sites based INSIDE it's borders.

How do you think so many "Illegal" sites are in operation? because where the site is hosted, there is nothing illegal about it.

The site is definitely hit or miss, but the hits I don't want for anyone to see if they decide to look up my name. I didn't even look up my email. I plugged my name in and it brought up my house address, my phone number and a map to my house. The only websites I have given that info to are sites I've bought stuff from.

I know that stuff is out there. I put it out there. I just have a problem with sites like that one that post it all in a nice little package. Then they go on about how they 'respect your privacy' if you want the info removed. :rolleyes How about asking people if they would like it there instead.

But, no. I agree that no website is safe. The ones you have to worry about are those that can gain by the info. The government could care less about it. I, for one, don't want the government getting more involved with the internet than they already are, though.

Funny I was thinking about that right now because due to the Fact that not all countries have the same political philosophy , therefore leading to a change in Law's as you change countries.

Oh yes I agree 100% about that kind of site, don't get me wrong, any site that gathers personal info for "No aparent reason" should be shut down, but once again it depends where it's hosted.

I would be annoyed if my name had come up but like you the only sites that get my info are either government sites (mainly immigration) and shops, but I only use online shops I know to be well respected.
Also I will never deal with a company that does not have a physical address and phone number. At least then in a last resort I can march into the store :-D

@jbd... Yes, unfortunately changing internet laws requires ALL countries to agree.
Thats why it's called the "World Wide Web"

Those are some good tips , I don't know about you guys but to me the moral of this thread to me has become " you Control how much privacy you have by controlling how much info you give away "
