I followed the instructions concerning setting up FAH ect...

I put in the MG Team code 12072

But when i click in user stats, it says im "The DVF Grim Rippers (51205)"

i dont know how this has got there, any suggestions how to get rid of the "grim reapers" and back to MG?

Probably not the end of the world if a stay a "reaper" but id rather be part of the MG Team!!

Welcome to folding!:cool Now, I found your stats on the team that you mentioned and their team number is 51205. Right click the client again and check the team number in the 'configure' option. That ain't right at all. heck, it should never do that.:confused

Actually, after doing some digging and actual thinking, rolleyes you don't seem to be the same burrell who started folding 3/3/09. Which client are you using on what hardware? You will have to wait to show up on MG's list after your first WU has been completed, sent and recorded. Depending on your machine, it could take days.

i clicked configure, it says team number 12072,

is it possible that there is another Burrell?

I am using the client that i downloaded from the folding@home webpage

    I have an

    Asus M4a78-E
    AMD 620 @3.2Ghz
    3 Gb ram
    GeForce 9600 GSO

Ooohh, a quad with a decent video card too, we can get this baby to rack up some real points!:drool However, we won't push you past your comfort zone, at least for now.;) You have to learn your way around first, though if you're feeling brave...:-D

OK,. so it sounds to me that you grabbed the single CPU core client which is the most stable and easiest to use. It's basically a set it and forget it type of client which is also the smallest point getter as it only uses one core out of the four that you have available.

Yes, it's definitely a different burrell and since you don't show up on MG's page yet means that you haven't completed your first WU(work unit) yet. Hang in there, it could take several days as these are the slowest.

To find out where the crunching is at, see how far along you are by checking your log. Right-click the icon and click on log and you'll see at how many %(or frames out of a 100) you are at.

It says i am at 66%

I have been folding for around 16-18 hours.

    Is this a good time?

Thankyou for the reply, as im am very new to all this stuff! But i'm more than happy to help!

Just out of curiosity.. how much bandwidth does "folding" require?
I have unlimited internet, but was just wondering!

Good, so your first WU should finish in less than 11 hrs. for a total of 27hrs./WU so that should be around 5AM your time assuming you live in the UK. Ya, that's a pretty good speed for a single core.:cool

As for internet usage, the WU projects are not that big at your level. Perhaps 5MB compressed each way. However, once you get into multi-core folding(SMP) folding big units(you get the best points for these), it'll be around 50MB each way for each WU and will use a big chunk of your internet speed when the completed WU is being uploaded.

I have a 768KB/s upload rate and that takes around 3 minutes during which time surfing is very slow. However, it's only once or twice a day but SMP folding is fodder for another thread and should probably be undertaken after you have successfully set up folding with your graphics card. This gives the best points per day(PPD) on any machine except for the Intel i7.:)

@burrell (thought you might want to know)

    What is a passkey?

The passkey, a new feature beginning with the v6 FAH client, is a unique identifier that ties your contributions directly to you (not just those with your username).
The use of a passkey prevents others from cheating in your name. Obtain a passkey from our web site (see below), enter it when you configure the client, and the client and servers will do the rest. You should keep your passkey secret.

What is the purpose of a passkey?

Previously we have not had unique identifiers in Folding@home (usernames for example can be shared by many people). One main benefit of passkeys is that if someone cheats, we will not need to zero out the points of everyone with that username -- only the offending party and those without passkeys. Perhaps more interestingly, we plan to institute points bonuses, which will be tied to passkeys. Finally, the existence of passkeys opens up future possibility of displaying your individual credit and other information, rather than just by username.

thx. for joining up if I haven't said so before and welcome to the fold...

    Hi there again!

I have completed my first WU!!! :-D

I downloaded the gpu client and i am 65% of my way through my first one on the gpu!

Now i have completed my first WU i should soon appear on the MG Team, yes?

I have just realised that the second WU i am doing seems to be much smaller!
When i hover over the f@h icon on the task bar it says it out of 500, whereas the last one was much bigger old one was 1,500,000, new one 500,000

I dont know if this matters at all, but thought i should say something as i am new to this

Hmm, you should be showing up by now but you're not for some strange reason.:confused Good show on getting the GPU folding on board!:major:cool

Please check your log to make sure the WU results were sent to Stanford and there's a message near the end saying 'successfully sent, thank you for your contribution' as firewalls sometimes block these things.

EDIT: BTW, if you just completed your WU, which seems late to me according to my calculations, then check your status at Stanford, if it's there then EOC will pick it up in a few hours.:)

No problem there. WUs come in different sizes due to the differences in the size of the protein being modeled.

Stanford is doing a stats update right now and Donor stats are unavailable. Can try a little later in the AM.

I think it has sent, from what i can see in the log, so yeh, it must be that they are updating.

You might not see it on the next EOC run in about an hour and 45 minutes because they don't usually pick up a run at this time but I'm sure you'll be up there 3 hrs. after that!

Hehehe, sorry but it's always exciting to see someone's first unit get posted, at least it is for me.;):-D

    Welcome to folding.:)

    LOL :-D!

I'm figuring that when you get everything setup properly, you should be getting at least 6K PPD as I'm lowballing both your CPU and GPU, I'm not familiar with either though I'm sure that I'm in the ballpark.;)

you are a fast learner burrell as I noticed from viewing your log file (.txt posted) you have changed settings to allow as little interaction as possible, which is good as it allows production and points to Not wait on an end user response.

yes I remember my first WU a combination of anticipation mixed with a joyful feeling :-D

    @nprob

Thankyou :) i just had look through the advanced options and optimised to my liking

My score now shows on the MG team

But i have similar scores as people who have completed 10 or more WU's, why is this? when i have only completed 2? I dont fully understand this point scoring business yet!

Stanford releases WUs that are assigned a point value from a reference machine that they use as a basis for the point system. If you finish a WU (in CPU folding) before the deadline they assign, you get the full value. In GPU folding, the technology is more expensive to have, (since the GPU units are only available to be folded on more recent video cards) so a higher point value is assigned to a completed WU. These are usually finished quite rapidly by the GPU and more WUs can be completed in a shorter period of time but again the investment is more from the end user (you) so Stanford assigns a higher relative point value since you are providing more of your resources for free. Also folding 24/7 rather than just part of the day allows people to complete WUs faster.

The point system has no intrinsic value for folders other than to measure your contribution to the science. You do have some of the higher teams that have made a conscious effort to be the "best" and do more to follow the science and beta project releases to achieve higher point totals.

Also, in the breakdown of the Stanford stats, you have a team ranking that shows the total points contributed as the highest and you also have the top producers ranking who are contributing a higher point average per day. With the advent of GPU folding, a relatively small machine can amass points faster than what a CPU farm of folding machines could do which was the prevalent type of mass point production earlier in the science. That's one of the reasons you have a higher point total for fewer WUs.

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Just to add to lbmest's post, I used to CPU fold with a single core 3800+ and got maybe 400 points per week, I can't really remember, but it was a pitiful amount in comparison to today's much faster hardware and WU coding.

So, just one more step to maximize your production left.:) Virtual machine folding using all 4 core of your CPU with a Linux client. This is fairly easy to set up with explicit instructions but is a bit harder to maintain just because it's Linux.

Welcome to the fold from another folding newbie! I have both the cpu and the gpu folding running all the time unless im playing a game and even with my lowly E5400 dual core and my decent Ati 4850 card, im already over 20k points and i dont think it took much more than a week or 2. (oh forgot also have my ps3 folding when not playing games).

I expect youll surpass me one of these days and i look forward to the challenge of keeping up with you.....not that its a race or anything.....

(runs out of the thread to find more folding)

just a little question, is pressing ctrl-c the correct way to shut down the mpi smp folder?

After finishing a recent WU, it stalled, so i left it for 30 mins, then decided nothing was happening, so pressed ctrl-c (i read somewhere that it closes it down) and restarted, now it just stops on
If you see this twice, MPI is working
If you see this twice, MPI is working

    Any ideas?

  25. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

You can either ctrl-c or stop the service if you installed as such.
Have you checked CPU usage and log files? Make sure you don't have the -configonly flag as an argument.
You could also try deleting the cores and let them download again if nothing is happening.

  26. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Best thing I found is to save your work folder elsewhere first and then cancel with ctrl-c to try and save the WU and then restore it. If you don't see your CPU being worked using TM, then that WU is most likely toast.

  27. Burrell

    Burrell MajorGeek

Sorry if i sound stupid here, but how would i "replace" the WU?

  28. lbmest

    lbmest MajorGeek

What augie is referring to is the work folder in the folding folder. It contains all the checkpoint information that is generated as the process works.
Put it into another folder or your desktop, then stop the CPU. Put the work folder back in where it was and restart the process and check CPU usage.
If it is trashed, stop the process again, delete all the files in the work folder and restart. This will make the process download a new WU if it sees no work files.

I don't think this question is worth it's own Thread so here i go resurrecting this one yet again.

Is there a way that i can put this Folding Stats image below into my sig?

I think it would be good to raise the folding awareness, as most people don't even know what folding is!

I could change the link when you click it to a page about information about what folding is and hoe you can help ect.

Get special dispensation from one of the admin/mod team. They are the only people allowed to have links in their sigs.

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Ya, Halo is taking care of this forum so ask him. I'm not sure of what he would say as some or many folders will ask for the same thing and then others will ask for whatever they will ask for like benchmarks etc. I'm not saying he won't but these folks don't want these types of auto-sigs, first of all for the size and then perhaps a drag on the server plus extra work for the mod/admin. I for sure would not want to.

Hey, give it a shot man, the worst he can say is no.:) Maybe even someone can write a script just for the MG folders but...

PS - (Oh and BTW that reminds me about a question i had a while back about the server, does the server/s for this forum backup around 7:30AM GMT? Because some mornings when i come on here at that time, nothing works, at all, not a thing)

I recived your PM but I can't reply to PMs because I don't have the 50 posts needed before you can send a PM, although I have been a member for 8 years rolleyes

I'm trying to catch and pass Dark Winter but that will take about 6 mos.

I passed augie yesterday :wave you need to get back to folding

I ought to switch my main over to 32bit Linux for those 50,000 point bonuses and try to catch LBMEST

augie does the majority of his folding for another team. He just tests out new configurations here. (I want to see his i7 testing when he gets that rig built. A good long test of about 6 months ought to suffice.;)) http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=140887
I've been trying to catch up with his points for the last year or so.

OK, I'm up for a little competition rond36. Bring the heat on.;)

OK, one would think that after 8 years here I'd be able to use the multi-quotes but nooo! Aaarrgghhh!!!:D So I'll answer in order of presentation.:)

Good stuff in passing me rond36 but then you should have passed me in a week if you have an i7!:confused

Uht oh, lbmest outed me!:p:-D My secret lair is no longer secret!;)

Things are looking good for an i7 this month or May. I know I want a four header mobo so that I can have good space for some nice GPU's eventually. Between the costs though, aside from the GPU's, I'll need a couple of PSU's to power all that.

So that means a new power box which I could easily connect to my existing electric baseboard 220V line as my current line( no jokes here :p) won't be able to take it. At this point, I think I'll forget about a full tower case and get the nitty gritty working first on the tabletop. It might not look nice but heck, who cares if it's working.-D

Hehehehe, nah I'm thinking long term here too.;) ATM I have a GTX260 and a pair of 9800GTs which are working just perfectly fine but I eventually want to reduce the CPU's to one for power considerations. There is no point in wasting power/heat and I'd still get an i7 regardless of that.:-D

I'll have to follow your tut on multi-quoting again tomorrow. I did spend 10 minutes on it today with no obvious success!:-o:-D:confused
