Last night I lost my turn signals and brake lights. Running lights work. I replaced the fuse for the turn signals, and they work now. But no brake lights. The fuse is good, bulb appears to be good, but no brake lights.

Stop light switch seems to be working fine. Any ideas? I tried testing the fuses in the circuit box with a DMM, but am getting no voltage on any of the fuses, even when the engine is running and the radio is playing, I get no voltage on that fuse? :confused Verified DMM is working, tested it on my battery, got like 14 Volts, don't remember the exact amount. Don't have a test light.

What year and type of vehicle Fred? And does the hi-mount brake light work.

It is a '92 D21 Nissan, got it a year before the 3rd light was needed.

Yeah, I am old school... :-D

A "True American" with a Nissan?

    Now I've heard everything :p

I would help out here but but vehicle electics are like the Pyramids to me... a complete mystery lol, but the thread title intrigued me lol

lol Not trolling, just living here I've heard so many people go on about "Buying American"

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that made me laugh "Enjoy being unemployed? Keep buying Foreign"

Personally I'd take a Nissan or Toyota over Chevy, Ford, Dodge any day.

Unless someone gave me a RAM 3500 for a grand :-D

This is a wiring diagram for your brake lamps. It may help locate a bad component. Won't really tell you where to find a broken wire. And for the record it's Ford all the way. If you don't agree, I'll take back my wiring diagram.;)

Hi Fred, sounds like you have a broken wire somewhere, most likely one going TO the fuse box. Follow the wires back, and keep testing until you find where there is no voltage. It for sure sounds like a broken wire, or it lost contact with that fuse. ;)

Thanks for the replies. Bought me a test light, so instead of hunting eggs Sunday, I will be hunting for the 'magic smoke'.:-D

Good luck - had a similar problem with an 80's Pontiac wagon - tail/brake lights suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. Bulbs, fuses - all good. As I recall the dash lights on the same fuse worked also . . . :confused

Finally found a ground strap that should have been hooked to a rear quarter panel via a metal tab had rusted and broken off. Attached it with a bolt and, presto!

I'd taken half the car apart before I happened to pull the interior panel that exposed the problem . . . hope yours proves easier to track down! ;)

Truck lights are fixed!! :dancer Turns out the stop light switch was out of adjustment? Looked fine to me. I would feel bad if I ever claimed to me a mechanic. :-D I fix computers...

Gonna cost me a bottle of wine, but I am happy.

Hey Fred, that is cool! A bottle of wine isn't too bad tho.:-D
Bartering is good too! I use maple syrup as leverage sometimes ;)

Good deal, Fred. Glad you got it squared away.

Turn signals died again. :cry Talked to my mechanic, and he said a bad bulb could cause the problem. (It blows the turn signal fuse, repeatedly). Well, bulbs are cheap, will swap them out and see if that helps.

    Still got brake lights. ;)

Hey Fred! Were your ears ringing today? I had to hook up the trailer, to go and pick up my garden tractor, as they took off the snow blower and put the mower deck on, and guess what? NO R-side trailer light! Yup, got the tester out, and had juice from the plug back, but NOT at the R- side trailer light. Grrrrr. Those field mice have GOT to find something else to chew in the winter!:yumrolleyes

I did a "quick job" of rewiring that one light, got everything working, signals, lights, BRAKES, so went in and picked up JD, then came home. Now, my project will be to rewire the whole thing. I don't think my "short-term solution" will be anything permanent! LOL

Just thought I'd let you know, you are not alone! :-D

Better you than me TeeCee! I have had enough car trouble in the last 6 months.. :-D

I hear ya Fred! The van is no problem, but the trailer wiring, :eek. That is OK, because I can re-wire it. Been there, done that, and even have the T-shirt to prove it! LOL I think that is easier than what you had to go thru tho. The bugger was, I told the guy that called, "I'll be right there......" That didn't happen! Took me a while to quick-connect it! :-D

Have you checked the turn signal flasher?

My sister's newer Monte Carlo has been doing the same thing. She has an electronic turn signal flasher. I've replaced that and she hasn't had a problem since.
