Cool - they are really coming down in price! I got my eye on a 120gb . . . but it's still way, way to expensive to justify buying yet . . . :(

I could make so many quips about this comment . . . all of them wrong on a host of levels.

Cool, been playing with SSDs for the last year have 2 of them Raid0 at present, need to get some 2nd generation controller ones though, some good tips on speeding tem up out their, but Windows 7 is geared up to SSDs natively, whereas the others are not, need alot of Windows built in apps and a few tweaks to get the best out of them.

How much faster are they? roughly.

More reliable as well I take it since no moving parts.

    Hi Ned

This is a quick test I did after some tweaking on Windows 7 beta, not tested lately as need to rebuild the PC that has the SSDs in at present or more so move them to my main PC with an i7 CPU and 6GB DDR3

but the transfer speeds pass my current 2xWD Raptors in Raid0, mostly in read which is what SSDs do very well, mine are 1st generation so not as good as the new 2nd gen controllers which come with TRIM built in, that really does help.

Newer ones will be quicker than mine as these are over a year old and may actually end up as data storage and I will get newer SSDs with TRIM function.

    @Ned

the new generation like the Crucial RealSSD-C300 SATA-III 6Gbps SSD are lighteningly fast but expensive still, I'm waiting a while as prices are dropping all the time on these, just noticed they are $100 less than they where a few weeks ago.

An SSD would go really well in a laptop, quietness as well as speed, need Windows 7 to take advantage of them fully, as its geared up for SSD, I just need to rebuild that PC that they are sitting in now, or as I mentioned move them to this core i7 PC.

Oh I wouldn't put it in this laptop lol, I just ran the test on here because the missus is on the desktop lol

And I looked at the prices, little hefty at the moment but I was thinking in a few months I may be able to get a 160gb drive for use soley in gaming for around $100-150
I was looking at the 15k rpm raptor drives but it would seem ssd are faster still.

Couple of 15k raptors in raid0 would give a single SSD a run for its money, just remember when looking for an SSD make sure it has the TRIM fuctionality, mine dont but I did early adopt without thinking, but as you see the tests show how old SSDs work and the newer ones will be much better, TRIM keeps the drive fresh and stops the data blocks becoming junked up.

As soon as my employer starts selling SSDs,I'm getting one. I've seen them run in the test lab... it's like going from dial-up to T1 on a hard drive!

I got it installed and it's beyond awesome

Speeds work as advertised 175 MB/sec read and 42 MB/sec write for me

Just curious to what Windows version you using? will likely add posts to your other thread in the tech areas on defrag and tweaking though over general chat here, just need to know OS?

I'm getting one! I'm getting one!!! :celebrate

So I mentioned my company is going to start selling SSDs, right? Well, our team supervisor has listened for months to us bit-, ahem, expressing frustration that whenever they release a new product it never occurs to anyone to tell Tech Support, or to provide us with any other info than a spec sheet, but still, we're supposed to do in-depth tech support on the things. It annoys us. This morning, we got called into a meeting with the supervisor and his boss, and they explained that since they understood where our frustration was coming from, they had requested and been granted the right to give us one SSD each, for "testing". They will become our property and we can do whatever we want with them. :hyper:hyper:hyper

Now, I just need to get that stupid computer functional again... but that's a whole other story. :)

The boss' boss says we'll get 128GB drives. :)

Oooh, that's a great idea! I should buy a second one and RAID them! :hyper
