Sorry about where I'm postig this, but I don't know where else to put it.I have 2 computers, and one is fairly old ( as in I bought it new in 2004 ). I run regular defrags and disk cleanups, ( one a fortnight ) and disk checks ( once a month ). When I went to run the ChkDsk program, and rebooted the computer, it found a very large amount of corrupted files, which is strange, as it doesn't normally find that many. The computer has a 1.8Ghz proccesor and 1gb of RAM. It has a 30gb hard drive, but I have dedicated that to windows and have a 350gb harddrive for all my program needs.

I knew it was going strange when the mouse stopped working, and so I ran the ChkDsk utility and restarted the computer. As I said, it found lots of corrupted files, and while looking for more, it froze ( the harddrive stopped working, and it didn't move an inch in 14 hours). I tried this several times and I don't know what to do. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Probably should go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download the diagnostic tools for the drive just to be sure. But considering this:
it looks like the drive has been doing down hill for some time and finally failed.

There could be other reasons, hopefully some one will come along with a better idea and prognosis.

OK, thanks, I'll go check that now. If the harddrive does fail ( the computer is a laptop ) how would I then fix it - I'm new to computers, as you can see. I can't run it off the external harddrive I presume.

While you're visiting the manufacturer's web site look for the documentation for your laptop model. Hopefully there will be diagrams of the system(I need pictures myself:-D). Then you would have an idea of how to remove the old one and replace it with the new.

You could also post the make and model of your laptop here and some one will probably come by that can explain the procedure. I have little experience with laptops myself.

Sorry for last short post(had a minor emergency). If you will post the make and model of your lap top I will try and find out what I can in the way of what type of hard drive you can put in. Then you can visit a site like NewEgg to see what is available that fits your needs.

All of this depends on what the results of the hard drive diagnostics turns out to be. If the drive tests don't show anything wrong, then we'll have to look elsewhere for the problem.

Well I have spent long enough trying to find the diagnostic tool for a Toshiba hard drive. Can anyone tell me where it is ?

The first one only lets me scan my hardrive for programs - my external one. It won't let scan my internal hardrive. The second one is DOS, and the third won't even boot up. I don't know what else to do.

I'm afraid I'm not being of much help here but try taking a look at this:

    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT

"DFT"= "Drive Fitness Test". Seems Toshiba didn't make a hard drive diagnostic tool available, but supposedly the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test will work.

You will need the ability to burn iso images to a CD-RW to make a bootable CD so you can run the diagnostics. A free, easy to use and reliable program for this is ImgBurn. Instructions for burning How to write an image file to a disc using ImgBurn.

On older Toshiba laptops, the hard drive is under the dvd/cd rom, and usually one screw holds the dvd/cd rom in and when you remove it the hard drive is looking at you, on others the hard drive has a small cover about 2.5" wide that is held in by one screw, and the hard drive can be pulled out. You need to look all around the sides of the laptop to find it.
