64 bit ie works, but 32 bit ie will not start, won't start in no addons mode, won't start if right click and run as administrator is selected, won't start in safe mode, and if you double click a internet shortcut on the desktop it takes about half a minute and then an error comes up saying "there was a problem sending the command to the program".

i have tried reseting ie in control panel, i have tried disabling and enabling ie in ad/remove programs, and i have tried several restore points with no luck. i have not run into this problem before and google only gives up posts that are resolved by trying one of the things i have already tried.

i am afraid i may have to just format and reinstall, but i would like to try find an answer before i take the lazy way out.

Please enlighten me, I usually read posts on this site in hopes of gaining knowledge. Why the need to run 32 bit IE on a 64 bit operating system? MS web site says most 32 bit programs will run on 64 bit with the exception of some antivirus programs, while 64 bit versions won't run on 32 bit. And drivers are a no go...Imagine my next new, used machine will be 64 bit, pump up the RAM :drool

because plugins like flash don't support 64 bit ie.

and to update the original problem i have also tried creating a new user and ie won't load in that user either. just for laughs i scanned with security essentials, mbam, and spybot all came up clean.

From an elevated command prompt, try SFC /scannow
Note the space before the /

forgot to mention it, but yeah sfc was one of the first things i ran.

thanks for the link, unfortunately no help in this situation.

right now the next step seems to be an in place upgrade (aka repair install).

In step 3 it says to put in the Win 7 INSTALLATION disk, so you had the install disk? I ask because I just posted a thread asking about how to get the install disk with a new system, ( I am looking to get one). And I was pretty much told that it isn't likely/possible to get this anymore. How did you end up with one?

you may have to jump through some hoops and pay a few bucks, but you should be able to get a copy of 7 from your computer manufacturer (assuming that is the os that came with your computer). if worse comes to worse you can always get it from a retailer like newegg.
