    Hi.
I hope someone can help me....I have a bit of a problem here.... I have already read the threads at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=108093

Have an old Optiplex here that I am trying to fix up a bit for the school - it was donated by someone years ago; used to be a "client", and had XP Pro and Office 2000 put on it when it was donated. It was trudging along with 128K RAM and was slower than a dinosaur, so I put some more RAM in, and it worked better. But I've got some other problems:

It only had a 10Gig HDD and windows updates turned off - it's on SP2, and I thought I'd better get a bigger HDD in there before I update it. So I cloned the HDD to a 40Gig using CasperXP. When I put the clone in position 0, and changed the jumpers from slave to master, it booted, then did its auto-login and then I got a BSOD error C000021A Windows Logon Process system process stopped 0xC0000005 (0x00000000, 0x00000000). So, I tried it a couple more times, with the same result. Then I booted into safe mode with networking and that worked. I made sure there was no Norton GOBACK on it (I had read that this could be a problem).

Now I can't even get the computer to recognize the HDD at all. And it won't recognize the original HDD either. I'm in a bit of a spot here, as I had hoped to get this computer all done during the Easter break. When they come back on Tuesday next, they will be needing this computer......

This thing is set up a little strangely (I think) - I had noticed that, even thought there were 2 "users", it auto-booted into the one they used daily. Also, the root (C$) was being shared. I think I saw some sort of authentication logon as well. Every time I would unshare C$, it would share again on the next boot. I am thinking there is some sort of leftover setup from the original owner - not sure if this makes any difference with the cloning - just thought I would mention it.

I had run a full MBAM and it came up clean, before I cloned it.

It won't recognize the old HDD either anymore.

Thanks for any help! I am truly stumped on this one.

Hmmm... power supply? Cables? Connections? CPU?...
Any chance you loosened or dislodged the ribbon cable when plugging in the HDDs (ie, make sure the other end of the cable is in and secure)?
    Do the HDDs spin up?
Are they recognised in the BIOS?
Try removing all unnecessary peripherals and give it a boot.
    I assume you're getting a POST beep.

    Hi. Thanks for your reply.

I decided to remove the BIOS battery and reset everything (including the tamper settings from when it was a workstation). Put the old HDD back in and VIOLA! booted back up. Slaved in the 40 Gig and found Reallocated Sector Count = 1 failure. Evidently these workstation BIOSs won't let you run on a failing HDD.

So I have the computer back up and running with the old HDD ... now I need to find a new larger one, and I should be good to go.

Well done. Thanks for feedback. :)

I wouldn't have thought anything would let you run on a failing HDD :confused

LOL! This thing is so old, I didn't think it even had SMART available. I had no idea the disk was failing, but I have had reallocated sector count failures in the past and run the HDD for quite a while without incident.....go figure....:major
