To those who know JOTS(Joey off the streets) He has just lost his Dad-in-law who was like his own father more then an in law. He and his wife are wonderful people and have gone through a lot in over 6 months and now they have lost a close loved one. My Heart hurts with yours Dave.

I am so sorry for the loss of yours and Lorna's Dad today.I know it is hard for you two but you will see that as the pain goes the memories get stronger.I'm here for you Buddy.

It will be the little things
    that you will remember,
    the quiet moments,
    the smiles, the laughter.
    And although it may seem
    hard right now,
    it will be the memories
    of these little things
    that help to push
    away the pain
    and bring the smiles
    back again.

Many thanks for the kind thoughts, everyone. It hurts, but what makes it easier is that he went peacefully and didn't suffer.
There are a lot of reasons to mourn his passing, the main one for me being his sense of humour. He never lost that even when he was in considerable discomfort. He made me laugh right up to the end.
He had a big heart and helped us out in many different ways. There's a sense of disbelief that he's gone and his favourite chair will always be empty.
It's tragic to think that he gave so much but went away so soon. If there is a Heaven, and an eternal peace, that's where he's at. No doubt making somebody wet their pants with laughter.
Darlene, your sig is really apt on this occasion.
I do regret I didn't know him for longer. But I don't regret I knew him at all.
    R.I.P. Brian. God bless.

I am sorry for your lost. It sounds like he was a really funny man to be around and hopefully is in a better place. And its really good to know he didn't suffer like so many people do. Be thinking of you and wishing you get through the best that you can. Memories last forever.

You have my most sincere sympathies Jots, my father in law die just 6 months ago, he was 93 so had a good run but that does not make the pain any less for my wife who was very close to him so i understand your sorrow.

Words are never enough at a time like this but it helps to know you have friends out here in the ether.

Once again, thank you for the support and kind words.
I seem to have a permanent lump in my throat at the minute but I think mostly about the pain he caused in my side by making me laugh like a drain. I got his humour but others never really did. I would sometimes sit and LOL at his take on things and a roomful of others would sit and look at me as if I was insane for laughing at his 'serious' views on the world.
That's what I'll miss the most. His humour was drier than a Saudi Arabian off license (liquor store to the heathens among you) and he would have fit in nicely here. Unfortunately, he didn't rate technology much. He often had trouble using his TV remote :-D
Memories like that make me smile and I feel a bit better.
He will be interred at his small country church on Monday and I'll raise a glass on behalf of the Geeks to his memory at his wake.
Thanks again, we really appreciate it.

It sounds like he will forever hold a special place in your heart. I believe should be the goal of everyone's life while living...to make a positive impact on those you care about. He seems to have done so.

*hugs* going out to you all, Dave.

My ancestors, crude though they might have been, had this notion that on a man's funeral they celebrated the life he had lived, rather than the sorrow they felt at his leaving them. There is something to be sad for that... this man left you a lot Joey, lots of good memories and lots of good things to remember and learn from. Remember the good things. The pain will lessen, eventually... as much as it can.

That reminds me a bit of my grandfather before he passed away. He was always a comic, with probably a similar dryness. He had mild dementia, but his personality made it almost impossible to tell if he was being serious about something, or just trying to be funny, and cause you to think about something.

There was one time, he called down to the office here (it's a family business, that he retired from) and told me that it was cold in his house, that the clear plastic cover had fallen off his thermostat, and he couldn't see well enough to put it back on, but he was sure that it was causing a malfunction and wanted to have someone come snap it back on for him.

One of the guys went to his house and helped him out.. Turns out, the cover was on, the heat was turned down, and a lens was missing from his glasses..

I'm pretty sure he was lonely, that was right after his wife of more than 50 years had died.. But he didn't like asking people to come around.. It was funny though, I still get a kick out of things like that.

Again, my heart goes out to you and your family Dave. I hope you're healing well. It seems to me, that the people who offer the most help to others, often suffer the most when there's nothing left that they can do. Trust that your pain comes from the positive that you've been able to offer to myself, your father-in-law and I'm sure countless others. :cool

1.That is so true Pax with a lot of people and the sad thing is that some of their families are so caught up in their own world that they don't see it.
2.JOTS Pax is absolutely right.I'm sure you will be doing the same for others as others have done here for you.

Brian was laid to rest today. It went very well, weather was good and all the family were together. It was solemn but brought forth some engaging stories about him. He has apparently had a colourful past, not the staid and boring life I thought he'd lived. These stories of his past weren't shared while he was alive, not out of shame, I hasten to add, more out of modesty. He weren't a braggart and I think he would have wanted it this way.
    Hellraiser, drinker, fighter :eek
Of course, that changed gradually when he met his future wife. Then he became babysitter, DIYer, cleaner :-D
He didn't become a saint overnight, but he was a good man while I knew him.
I'm glad he had a good send off, he would be happy with the way things went.
    One more chapter closed.

I'm glad that the Service went well under the circumstances. To live a good and full life, have children and to be loved and remembered by family and friends - one couldn't really ask for more. I'm dealing with a number of close losses through death in recent years, and I just try and think of the friendships and laughs rather than the loss.
-Wishing you peace and strength through the time of mourning, Dave. Take care.:)

My ancestors would have approved. :)

You were lucky that you got to know a good man and good friend like that. Though it hurts to lose good friends, they never really go away as long as someone remembers them. And from the sound of it, he did his part--he left you lots of things to remember him by.

A chapter closed... but what a chapter it was.

I think the best anyone can hope for is to have stories about our "colourful past" told at our funeral. How neat that you learned some new things about him while celebrating his life as you knew it. :)
