Ran All Scans! Problems Present

My problems started on March 2nd or 3rd between 8:00 & 9:00 am. I was using firefox to search for some work related information. When I clicked on a link I was redirected to other websites. I don't remember the name of the other websites. The next day I noticed that there were fake antivirus programs running on my computer.

I proceded to run all of the recommended scans from safe mode. Now I have a program called XP Antivirus Pro 2010.

My operating system is Windows XP 32-bit service pack 3.

I was not able to attach the SASlog or the Mbam log because my computer will not let me open them. When I try, my computer asks me which program I would like to use to open these applications.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You don't need to open them inorder to attach them. In the Manage Attachments window you just browse to the folders/files on your hard disk and select them for attachment and then Upload them. The files we need are shown below. There are more in these folders but I only want to see the ones indicated from March 5th.
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Leah Maria\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\"
    Mar 5 2010 5453 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 03-05-2010 - 02-07-05.log"

    "C:\Documents and Settings\Leah Maria\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\"
    Mar 5 2010 4372 "mbam-log-2010-03-05 (02-37-33).txt"

Also go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
You also need to uninstall your outdated copy of Sun Java and update as requested in step 3 of the READ & RUN ME.

Also please attach a log from MGtools obtain from normal boot mode. You should not be running in safe mode unless necessary and you did not say that you could not run in normal boot mode.

Also please rename ComboFix.exe back to what it should be named. You have 123.exe, change it back to combofix.exe

    You're welcome.

Why are you running this PC with NO protection? No wonder this PC is very very badly infected!!!!!

Did you run TDSSkiller exactly as I requested or did you simply double click on TDSSkiller.exe ?

You are way out of date with your databases for Malwarebytes which means you did not update as requested.

Please run Malwarebytes and click the Update tab. Then click the Check for Updates button so you update to the current version of the program and database. Then run a new scan with it too. Make sure you fix the problems found before saving a log. Attach the new log.

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • the new Malwarebytes log
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

NOTE: You are getting low on free disk space on drive C, you should clean up or you should get a larger hard disk since yours is rather small by today's standards. The below is what you have
    Code:
    Drive C:
    Description Local Fixed Disk
    Compressed No
    File System NTFS
    Size 24.40 GB (26,197,516,288 bytes)
Free Space 3.01 GB (3,232,550,912 bytes)

Concerning TDSSkiller, I double clicked two times then I typed it into the run box. I was confused with the instructions at first. I apologize for the oversight.

I swear I updated mbam before I ran it the first time. I am trying to run it now and everytime my computer starts running a process called av.exe in its place. I end the process in the task manager but it always starts running everytime I try to run an application. Also I am noticing iexplore.exe is running when I am not using internet explorer. I end that process and it comes back too.

av.exe is stopping me from opening my web browsers also. I have been coresponding with you from another computer. I have had to use a flash drive to transfer every attachment as well as the scan tools.
How do I stop this so I can run the scan tools?

I will work on getting my desktop cleaned up in the meantime.

I ran the analyse.exe program as requested.

I also copy and pasted the CFscript.txt into notepad and saved it onto the desktop. When I tried to drag the CFscript.txt onto the ComboFix.exe icon it just pushed the Combofix.exe icon to the side. I tried this several times but the same thing happened.

I will wait for further instruction before I move on.

Unplug your cable connecting you to the internet, then try going to the C:\Windows\Tasks folder and deleting all files that say atxx.job where xx is any number like 1,2,3,....10,....60..70...etc. Then try stopping the av.exe using Task Manager. As soon as you stop av.exe try to quickly delete the below files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Leah Maria\Local Settings\Application Data\av.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Leah Maria\Templates\av.exe

Then try to immediately run the procedure given starting with ComboFix. If it will not work, try doing this in safe boot mode.

  8. trebor317

    trebor317 Private E-2

I was able to delete the atxx.job files.

I was able to delete both the av.exe files as well.

Then I tried to drag and drop the CFscript.txt icon over the ComboFix.exe icon but the same thing happened.

I rebooted in safe mode but I got the blue screen and had to power down.

I rebooted in normal mode and tried to drag and drop again. No such luck.

The good news is that the av.exe application does not load at normal start-up anymore.

Okay then let's try this using a different tool.

Note: If the av.exe process comes back at anytime, delete those job files and the av.exe files again.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  10. trebor317

I was prompted once each time by a window that said " the registry editor has been disabled by the administator" during the avenger.exe process and the GetLogs.Bat process.

Notice the capital B in the GetLogs.Bat file. It was the only file extension in the MGTools folder that started with a capital letter. I don't know if that makes a difference but I thought I should point that out.

    CCleaner ran just fine.

Once I finished obtaining the logs you requested I played around a little on the computer. I noticed that every time I opened a NON-MICROSOFT application, I get prompted with a window that asks me which program I would like to use to open the application. I just choose the program that matches what ever application I am trying to open and the program runs fine.

However when I open firefox. a window opens saying "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ff\..\..\..\..\bin\jqsnotify.exe Application not found". I close the box and firefox runs fine.

I deleted the atxx.job files before I started and they are there again.

Also av.exe is still present in the Windows Task Manager under the processes tab but it does not seem to be doing anything.

I'll know more as I use the computer.

    The requested logs are attached.

You are now using an extremely outdated version of MGtools. Please delete all these old copies of MGtools that you have laying around. Then download and run the new version as previously requested and attach a new log.

Also tell me what happens when you do the below.

Click Start, Run and enter regedit and click OK.

If the Windows Registry Editor opens, just closed it. I don't want you doing anything in there on your own but I want to see if it will run.

  12. trebor317

Prior to your last post I searched the computer for any av.exe files and deleted them.

There is another one that I am concerned about named mtg.exe.

I ran an updated version of MGtools.exe.

    The log is attached.

When I try to run regedit, an "Open With" window pops up. So I went to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.exe. After clicking OK, A window pops up with the following message:

"Cannot import C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor."

I wanted to let you know that when I run CCleaner, It removes Internet Explorer files. I don't use Internet Explorer. So why are they being removed if I have not used Internet Explorer?

Chaslang is without power and may not regain it for a few more days. Let's do this:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Note: I made some changes to TimW's fix so please re-read the current fix in the forum if you had an email notification of the fix Tim posted.

I ran TimW's scans before you made your changes. I also ran the scans after you made your changes. I tried to attach both sets of logs. When I click the upload button only one set is displayed. So I attached the later set of logs.
please let me know if you need the first set of logs prior to the changes you made.

After running avenger.exe, when I logged in after re-boot, a window popped up with the following message:

Windows cannot find 'C:\cleanup.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click search.

    I just closed the window.

I am continuing to get prompted with the "Open With" window when I run applications.

When I open Firefox, a window pops up that says:

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ff\..\..\..\..\bin\jqsnotify.exe Application not found.

I close the window and firefox starts. Then I am prompted with another window that say:

You have chosen to open firefox.exe
    Which is a: Application
    from: C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox
Would you like to save this file?

    I close the window.

Instead of my Google home page being displayed in the address bar, the following is displayed instead:

    file:///C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/firefox.exe

I checked to make sure that my home page is listed under the options tab and it is. I then updated to the latest version (3.6) of Firefox. That seemed to have solved the problem until I closed Firefox and re-opened it again. All of the same things happen in the same order and my address bar does not display my homepage.

I was also having mouse button issues. for a while it seemed like my mouse clicks were not working. I would click something and the computer would not respond or not respond right away. But the problem does not seem to be happening anymore.

I want to thank you again for your continuing participation in correcting the problems on my computer. I appreciate you sacrificing your personal time to help me. It means a great deal to me. Thank you.

Run the C:\MGtools\FixFA.bat program by double clicking on it. This will run very quickly.

If you are still having a problem where it is asking what to open executables with, see the below link:

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Scroll down to the EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files) line and run this fix. Then reboot and see if this helps.

The open executables problem has been solved. Thank you very much.

However, there are other problems that have not gone away.

When I attempt to log in to my hotmail account, my password is denied. It takes 3 to 4 attempts before my password is recognized as valid. The same thing happened when trying to log in to my majorgeeks account.

I installed Avira in an attempt to give the computer some protection. The minute I log on to my home screen, Avira hits me with multiple alerts telling me the computer has a Trojan of some kind. But the executables that Avira flags, look to be normal processes. I have to disable Avira in order to use the computer without being hassled by the Avira pop-ups.

Here are some examples of what Avira has been detecting:

    C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\app.dll.dll
    is the TR/Drop.Agent.bquw Trojan

    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\wmpscfgs.exe
    is the TR/Inject.anmy Trojan

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\acrotray.exe
    is the TR/Agent.AO.294 Trojan

What should I do when I am prompted by Avira?

Also, their seem to be new processes running at start-up. The names of these processes change every time.

I managed to send one to the recycle bin named IEXPLORE.EXE-2D97EBE6.pf. I tracked it down using the Windows search option. But in the processes list of the task manager it was named IEXPLORE.EXE.

Whatever has a hold of my computer system is one nasty mother. I will make it a point to keep a written log of the suspect processes in the task manager from now on. I will list them on my next post.

    Enclosed are the requested logs.

    Thank You

Yes these are all things we have been trying to fix. Most of your startup processes have been and still are infected and they keep respawning new infections as we remove them. Infections like this can often lead to a reinstall being required especially since the act of removal may lead to breaking the application related to the files that are infection.

Let's try a couple more things which is going to require us to uninstall a few things.

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:
    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
Now download and save the below installers for the current versions of Adobe Reader and FireFox but DO NOT reinstall it yet.
You will need exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

    Now uninstall the below:
    • Adobe Reader 8
    • FireFox
    • Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run SUPERAntiSpyware and first update it to current definitions. Then run a quick scan and fix any problems found.
Now run Malwarebytes and first update it to current definitions. Then run a quick scan and fix any problems found.

    • the logs from SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Prior to your last post, I temporarily uninstalled Avira.

After running the scans things seem to be operating normally.

I reinstalled Avira and it seems to be working. However, it has quarantined MGtools.exe claiming that it is a TR/Drop.Agent.bsvq Trojan.

I tried to run fixme.reg but it did not work. The message "registry editor has been disabled by your system administrator" displayed.

After completing the scans, I typed regedit into the run box to see if I could get into the registry editor. It worked. Will it still be necessary to run fixme.reg?

I cannot find the avenger.txt file. I executed a search for it but it is not there. The only one that comes up is the one from March 23, 2010 which is contained in the MGlogs.zip file.

I have attached the other requested logs.

I will wait for further instruction.

    Thank you.

Please do not do anything that I do not ask you to do.

Obviously just a false detection bug in Avira. We constantly have to complain to them an other companies to fix these bugs but they don't permanently fix the problem.

    No!

That's because it did not run properly. I will be giving you a new fix below where we will try ComboFix again. Shut down Avira now to avoid having it get in the way of further steps.

Please download and save the current version of combofix.exe to your Desktop now but do not run it until you get to my instructions below.

    O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\5.5.4723.1820\swg.dll (file missing)
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
    O8 - Extra context menu item: Google Sidewiki... - res://C:\Program Files\Google\Google Toolbar\Component\GoogleToolbarDynamic_mui_en_96D6FF0C6D236BF8.dll/cmsidewiki.html
    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: app_dll.dll

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I apologize for uninstalling Avira.

Avira was giving the computer a great deal of difficulty at start-up. Avira's detection boxes were on an endless cycle and would not stop popping up. When I would try to quarantine the detection, Avira would not respond. I tried to end the process in task manager and was denied access. Uninstalling Avira was a last resort. I am sorry if I have impeded the removal process. I will consult you from now on.

After running the scans on March 26, 2010, I attempted to reinstall the new versions of Firefox and Adobe Reader. Again, I am sorry if I was not supposed to reinstall the applications. Here are the results:

    Firefox installed successfully.

Adobe Reader did not. I was prompted with the following message:

    Error 1402.Could not open key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Window
    s\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\IMAIL.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or
    contact your support personnel.

I navigated to Adobe's website. Apparently this is a common problem. Adobe suggested changing the settings in the registry editor to allow the permissions. I elected not to make any changes to the registry without consulting you first. I do not feel comfortable doing this without instruction.

Not being able to view pdf files is a real problem for me. I really need to have this program installed as soon as possible. My work depends on this program. I have many estimates that I need to prepare for Monday morning. What do you suggest as a fix?

Concerning the latest scans, every scan seemed to run properly.

The computer seems to be running fine. I have not tried to boot into safe mode in a while. But last time I tried, the computer displayed a blue screen. I would like to know if this problem is related to the virus'. Would you like me to check this again?

When I run CCleaner, I never know which boxes to have checked before I run the scan. I have never checked any of the Advanced check boxes under the Windows tab and I don't plan on . My main concern is all of the other check boxes in the Windows and Applications tabs. I can't find a default settings button. What do you suggest?

Also what is the best way to handle the detected threats that Avira has detected. Is there a way to check if they are false positives? If so, how should these be handled.

I understand I have asked you many questions. If you have time to respond to only one, please respond to the Adobe Reader question. I can wait on the others.

    Enclosed are the requested logs.

    Thank You

Yes it is best to first explain to us what problems you are having and allow us to make suggestions. That way we are better prepared for changes that will be occurring on you system. It helps to avoid confusion.

Actually I did not want you to reinstall yet due to the fact that you still have startup processes that are potentially carrying the infection and anything installed that adds a startup can potentially propagate the infection. In you last ComboFix log, all of the below are still showing problems:
    Code:
    c:\program files\Brownie\brstswnd .exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched .exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\roxwatchtray9 .exe
    c:\program files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\dvdlauncher .exe
    c:\program files\Dell\AccessDirect\dadapp .exe
    c:\program files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\googletoolbarnotifier .exe
    c:\program files\iTunes\ituneshelper .exe
    c:\program files\Messenger\msmsgs .exe
    c:\program files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr .exe
    c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
    c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
    c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
    c:\program files\Real\RealPlayer\realplay .exe
    c:\program files\Synaptics\SynTP\syntpenh .exe
    c:\program files\Synaptics\SynTP\syntplpr .exe

While some of these can be easy to fix by just uninstalling and reinstalling later with new versions, others may not be so easy. Like the Synaptics files for your touch pad. You may need to reinstall this from your system disks that came with your PC. Also the same is true for the Dell junk that most people don't want/will never use.
    • Do you have your disks for the Brother Printer software ( i.e., c:\program files\Brownie\brstswnd .exe )?
    • Do you use PowerDVD? This should be on your system disks from Dell.
    • Do you use the Roxio software for burning CD/DVDs?
You will need to uninstall the below now if they are still installed since we will be deleting their folders in an attempt to cleanup:
    • Brother HL-2170W - if you have the CD/software to reinstall later
    • Google Update Helper
    • iTunes
    • Java Auto Updater and Java(TM) 6 Update 18 if both show.
    • QuickTime
    • RealPlayer Basic
We will attempt to fix this with my next fix below.

Not until I think we have finished removing all malware.

If you never changed it from the defaults when it was installed then it is fine. If you made changes, you can uninstall it and then reinstall after a reboot. Then make no changes to what it cleans by default.

This one is not so easy. You have to try and determine yourself when something is a false positive. Like the detection of MGtools.exe or ComboFix. Or things in their folders. All scanners have FP issues. Sometimes you will easily know, other times you will have to hunt for an answer. Instead of deleting, using the quarantine is best since you can always unquarantine.

Now we need to use ComboFix again
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.

    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it:
    Code:

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now see if you can re-install Adobe Reader. If not, see if one of the below will work as a temporary solution for your immediate work needs:
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Once we are sure things are okay, you will be able to reinstall iTunes (which will no doubt auto install QuickTime), MSN Messenger if needed and others. We still need to resolve the Synaptics and Brother Software issue.

Thank you for your speedy response.

Before I delete iTunes, will I need to back up the library of songs? They are stored in a different directory than the iTunes program file. They belong to another user on this computer. I would hate to tell her that her songs have been wiped from the computer.

I will download an alternative pdf viewer for the time being.

I will wait to perform any further action.

    Thank You.

I don't think uninstalling iTunes would remove any libraries however I don't know where they have saved the songs. I doubt it is in the C:\Program Files\iTunes folder since that would not be a standard practice (normally you would expect something under the user account name's My Documents or My Music folder but people can still make their own choices. You should check to see where they are saved since the procedure will be deleting the this iTunes folder. Either way, backing up the files ( off the hard disk like to a DVD ) is always a good thing for a user to do anyway since hard disks can crash and malware and the act of removal can sometime make a hard disk unbootable. It is not a totally fool proof process.

I agree with everything you said.

I will back-up all of the iTunes songs before proceeding with the fixes.

I am going to wait to install any pdf viewer. I was able to borrow another computer for the work I need to get done. I thought it would be best for now.

Thank you so much. I will post the logs as soon as I get the chance to run the fixes.

I have purchased an external hard drive and backed up the iTunes files as well as others.

Before I complete the fixes and send you the logs, I do have a concern with not being able to re-install my brother printer right away. It is absolutely necessary for me to be able to use the printer on a daily basis.

Is there any way around this problem?

If I finish my work and run the scans tonight, I probably wont need the printer until tomorrow afternoon. But, I may need it in the morning as I never know what each day will bring. The weekends are not any better.

    What is your suggestion?

    Thank You.

    Your logs are clean now.

Then just try the below fix I previously gave you for each of these account

  31. trebor317

    trebor317 Private E-2

I tried the EXE file fix on the other two user accounts and I get the following message:

Registry editor has been disabled by your administrator.

Firefox is also opening with problems on the other two user accounts.
This is the message at firefox start-up:

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\deploy\jqs\ff\..\..\..\..\bin\jqsnotify.exe Application not found.

When trying to adjust the volume of the computer from the control panel on the other user accounts, I get the following message:

    C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe
    Application not found

When I try to access the volume from the taskbar it does not respond. This is why I had to try it from the control panel.

What do you recommend? Why does firefox work great on my account but not the others?

    Thank You

Try running the fix in safe boot mode on those user accounts. Also try running C:\MGtools\FixFA.bat (also in safe mode) by double clicking on it.

Let me know if that helps.

Uninstall FireFox and then reinstall. If that does not help, next time you open FireFox, just close the error message and then:
    • Click on Tools
    • Select Add-ons
    • Locate and Disable the Java Quick Starter
    • Exit FireFox and try restarting
Do you see the file? It showed in your previous logs.

I ran the EXE fix in safe mode as well as the C:\MGtools\FixFA.bat fix.

That solved the problem with Firefox as well.

One new problem that I have on the other two accounts is that I am getting a RUNDLL Error when I log on to the other two accounts.

I have attached a copy of the errors.

Also, I am having problems logging off of the other two accounts.

I have to logout using the task manager.

I apologize for the delayed response. My work has been overwhelming lately.

    Thank You.

Let's work on one account at a time to avoid any confusion. Let's choose the KCP account first.

Log out of any other user accounts (i.e., do not use Switch User) and log into the KCP account and run a scan with Malwarebytes.

    • the log from Malwarebytes
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

  35. trebor317

    trebor317 Private E-2

I ran both scans on the KCP account as requested.

After the Malwarebytes Scan finished, I did not know whether I should take any action so I did not. I only saved the log.

When I ran MGtools, I got a registry editor has been disabled message.

    Enclosed are the attached logs.

    Thank You.

Do the below on the KCP user account.

Your Malwarebytes log shows that you took no action. Did you fix what it found? You need to remember to save logs after you fix not before.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [notepad] rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\KCP\ntload.dll,_IWMPEvents@0

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

I ran the scans and have attached the logs.

Things seem to be functioning normally.

I am getting redirected in Firefox when I click on a link after doing a search in Google. It doesn't happen every time. I uninstalled and reinstalled, but have not fixed the problem. My ad-blocking add-on does not work either. I am going to try to uninstall it one more time.

Okay! Malwarebytes found the same items as in your last log indicating that you did not fix them last time. I suggest running it one more time just to make sure everything was fix and they did not come back. Attach the new log.

Good but doesn't this contradict the below?

Uninstalling will not help unless you delete all the associated folders for FireFox afterwards and before reinstalling. The folders are:

    C:\Documents and Settings\BRETT\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

Are you still having redirection issues and is it only with this user account?

  41. trebor317

    trebor317 Private E-2

Overall the computer is working fine as far as I can tell.

I re-ran mbam on Brett's user account and have attached the log.

I executed a search for all Mozilla Firefox files and deleted them.

Then I re-installed version 3.6 which was downloaded from major geeks.

The re-direction problem is ever present. Sometimes it re-directs more than usual and sometimes less or not at all. It has been doing this on my account. I am not sure about the other user accounts.

Note sure why you keep saying this and then say you are being redirected which is contradictory. Do you believe that redirections are normal and acceptible?

You need to determine exactly which user accounts have the problem and then tell me.

Meanwhile, also do the below, on the account that you last posted logs for.

Now we need to use ComboFix

I completed your requests on Sunday May 16, 2010.

Since that time I have not had any problems with re-directs in Firefox on any of the accounts.

    Enclosed are the requested logs.

    Thank You

Just a few things left to clean up.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::
    Driver::
McAfee Security Scan Component Host Service

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\BRETT\Local Settings\Application Data\mtg

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
