I see that someone else in this forum got this malware.

Ours was in the limited user account. (We only have 1 limited user and 1 admin). It prevented any other programs from running in that account. It seemed to be removed by malwarebytes. However, the 1st time I ran malwarebytes it didn't find anything. I didn't save the log at that time and when I restarted the computer and tried to open malwarebytes (in order to save the log) I got an error message and it wouldn't open. I reinstalled it and ran it again and it found something this time. After that I was able to run programs from the user account however, windows is not able to find any programs (in that account) now and brings up a window asking which program to use to run them.

We also have an sas log - not sure how to attach it.

    Thanks.

WARNING: The following advice and fixes are specific to this member's problem and should be used for the issue(s) with this machine only.

Hello, somae - please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.

Observation: You need to increase your installed RAM memory to atleast 1 GB to run XP SP3 without having poor system response.

Total Physical Memory ------- 256.00 MB
Available Physical Memory ---- 60.42 MB

    Step 1:
Run the C:\MGtools\FixFA.bat program by double clicking on it. Note: This will run very quickly.

    Step 2:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step3:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 4:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

This problem occurred in our limited user account. After malwarebytes found the malware the "xp smart security" window no longer appeared and I was able to click on program icons but an "open with" window would pop up for all the programs. I have now been able to get firefox and windows explorer files to associate with their programs, but am having trouble with some others like word97 and windows explorer. (I haven't tried other programs yet.)

I previously created a new limited user account which isn't seeming to have any of these problems.

    Thanks for your help.

    :confused

Your newly attached ComboFix log did not contain the expected information - in fact, it's blank except for the usual heading.

*Did you follow my instructions exactly as posted in my post #4?

This appears in your HJT log - Why? What is this "C:\ComboFix\Combobatch.bat" ???
re: Post #4 RE-RUN the steps no.2 through 4 exactly as written.

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

I did have a problem - I forgot to turn off the antivirus and firewall and combofix stalled. I quit combofix and turned off the av and firewall and redid everything.

Also, I don't know why but all the programs in the affected user account are now associating with the correct files. I did create an EXE file type and associated it with "applications" but it didn't seem to help. In any case, the problem seems to have stopped.

I ran combofix from the admin account - I couldn't install it in the user account although I probably could now.

Don't know. There was a message after Combofix finished that it needed to reboot the computer. But our av and firewall start automatically on login so when Combofix tried to run after reboot it stalled. Combofix seemed to be trying to run when I would log in to an account for awhile. It's no longer doing that. I guess I'll disable the av and firewall from loading automatically on reboot this time.

There was an error message from mgtools that "processdll.exe failed to initialize properly".

Also, the combofix.txt file was in the combofix directory rather than in the c:\ directory. Don't know if that makes any difference.

    Aahhh

Please refer to our Windows XP Cleaning Procedure
    * I need to get a complete set of logs from the tools to verify that "All is well" with your machine. After making sure that you have properly configured your pc with the above notes in mind (Do NOT use MSConfig to control any startups) - please re-run the steps from my post #4.

    :)
Your logs look good, somae! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double-click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
