If I leave my system for a while on idle and then come back to it ALL my memory is used and it takes a few minutes to then become responsive again. No I NEVER EVER see this with XP with the SAME setup.

This make using windows7 X64 Ultimate VERY unresponsive and NOT enjoyably to use.

Here a screenie of Resource Monitor with the items arrange in most memory used and I can not see where it's all going.

The most any 1 program is using is 66 meg and that Nod32, Can anybody give me any tips to stop Windows7 Eating up all my memory as this is really annoying now, as EVERY time I come back to my PC after it being unused for a while it takes longer to get back upto speed than doing a reboot. And I know this cannot be right, I know Windows7 still has some funny quirks and flaws like the searching and sorting. But It's now a must in the light of a few games I have purchased.

    Thanks

Use W7's Task Manager, 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' and choose. Could be browser memory leak as my FF is up to 400MB ATM, I've read that there's IE8 memory leak too. Try TM as it gives everything. Click on the memory header to order by size. Oh, make sure you click 'show all users' bottom left. May have to unhide hidden files too.

BTW, did you install something new recently or it just started out of the blue?

Nothing new, I shut down firefox and thunderbird when I'm not using it. and the largest memory usage in a program is about 66 meg and that's ekern(nod32) in the picture I posted. The reason I asked is becuse the memory isn't shown buy any of the programs in task manager. I can open task manager check my memory usage, which is about 1.5 gig, I then go away from the PC do some bits and about an hour later when I come back I have NO memory left and even opening a WINDOWS explorer windows takes between 5-10 seconds as it's using the pagefile.

The design of any good operating system is to try to use ALL of the memory available, within reason. It doesn't make sense to roll a page out to disk to load another one if there is memory available.

I would doubt that this is the reason for your slowness. Did the machine go into standby?

but when it takes over 2-5 minutes for the system to come back to being RESPONSIVE after not doing ANYTHING surely thats not a productive use of the memory ?????? As you NEVER had to wait about 5 minutes for XP to be usable again?

Is the machine going into standby or hibernate when you leave it? How long do you leave your machine idle before you see the problem?

Is the Windows 7 machine a laptop? Is the XP machine a desktop?

Standby and Hibernate use A LOT of memory. Try leaving the computer alone for an hour, but keeping an eye on it.

Or better yet, take a screenshot of your Power Options control panel box, (the Power Schemes tab)

I NEVER use standby or hibernate. this is just leaving the pc for a while and when I come back ALL my memory is used for god knows what and even opening an MSN messenger window takes 30+ seconds. If I look in task manager I see it's used about 1.5 gig if I leave it alone for about an hour thats another 1gig gone and after about 2-3 hours of not being used thats all 4gig being used. I can use my PC almost all day and this NEVER happens until I leave it alone for an extended period.

your problem has nothing todo with superfetch windows is using ram as intended its doing exactly what its suspost
if you wanna turn superfect off start>run type services.msc hit enter and find the superfech service and stop it full system specs would be nice

Superfetch, readyboost, Indexing are ALREADY off. I could understand windows caching stuff but not at the detrimental effect it is having on the system. Surely winndows should leave at least a LITTLE ram for when you want to use the PC again ? I'm pretty sure I shouldn't have to wait to reclaim the ram back as even opening an MSN window takes well over 30 seconds when i have NO ram left. I can start programs and games in this state but they take AGES and AGES to load. If I boot windows and load firefox it takes about 3-5 seconds to load, If I leave windows alone for around 2 hours and come back to it and start firefox it takes about 1-1.5 minutes to load, surely thats not right ?

    System specs are E6600@3gig
    4GigMemory
2 Samsung 500gig Sata2 HD NOT in RAID
    ATI 4850
    Soundblaster X-fi Extreme

renable superfect and indexing (/me really wishes people would stop spending FUD about these services you DO NEED THEM)
    and please post the following
a screen shot of the windows task-manger IN fullscreen (yes the windows one not the 3d party one)
a list of your startup items
    a list of services

Well, it looks like a process of elimination now. Clean out your startup and re-add them one by one to see which is leaking memory. Also check safe-mode first just to make sure it's not something very basic that's doing it. Tedious but just about the best way, start with a clean machine and work your way up.

Do post your startup as requested as there might be something obvious in there.

    Hi

While I agree with rjc682003 and ram is wasted if not used in a PC, it does seem as if you have something holding onto your RAM and generally its a 3rd party applciation, so a few thougths and questions.

    1. Have you been editing the Services list?
    2. Do you have MagicISO or Daemon Tools, ISO mounting apps can cause this or p2p apps like uTorrent (uTorrent and some others if left on all the time, can cause ram leek)? So uninstall these apps in installed to test.
    3. I see you have Nod32 is it fully upto date with latest client version? also uninstall this app to test as some Antivirus applications can cause memory issues, also please list all the Security application you have installed on this PC?
    4. If you boot to Safe Mode is the PC ok if left for a while or same issue?
    5. Download CacheSet and run it as (righclick run as administrator) and whats the Peek Size?
    6. Download and run Process Explorer and check for high RAM usage from an application, you will need to add the columns for this right click the bar where it says PID and choose Select Columns and then click Process Memory and choose Virtual Size and Peak Working Set Size and see whats using alot of ram and take a screenshot of that area.
    7. When you come back to your PC is the power light flashing? if so just press the power button once, just an in out quickly, dont hold it in or you will shutdown the PC.
    8. Are all your Drivers, Windows 7 compatible, by that I mean are they listed as Windows 7 drivers or did you have to install any Windows Vista ones? (what is your motherboard make and model?)

I found my answer here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0a-5efe-43c8-b9c3-5d0ecb2f39af&displaylang=en and Microsoft know the problem but havn't a REAL fix for it, rather they issue a bodge for it, but it works.

1, YES- stopped indexing, superfetch and readyboost as they are NOT needed by me or the system.
2, I have none of them installed
    3, yes fully upto date
    4, yes
    5, 86972k
6, taskmangager/process hacker/process explorer, the largest amount of ram used by any 1 program was Eset(nod32 FULLY upto date) and was about 66 that tated in my first post.
7, NO the PC is NOT in hibernate or ANY kind of standby mode
8, all drivers I can think of are windows7, Mobo is MSI P35 (latest intel chipset drivers installed, as well as intel storage drivers(just had a name change))
