firewall states "new network found"

Okay, my firewall started popping up with a message telling me "new network found" every time I started my computer, without any option other than to choose "public, home, work" profile for it and then click okay. I always chose home because that's the most secure option, and that was what the firewall program (PCTools) recommended. I tried going into the program profiles, but there was nowhere to delete the profiles. Also, recently there have been no profiles there when I've looked. :confused

After I ran the XP Cleaning Procedure last night and shut down my computer for the night, I got no message when I booted tonight; so, maybe that problem has been solved, but the procedure found another one that concerns me greatly...especially because Avast has never caught it, even though it's supposed to.

Question: Why does my external hard drive continue to develop these issues whenever I try to save any data to it? It's fine until I save something to it. After the last issue, I formatted it; yet, the first time I save something to it (tools from your download site that I hoped would help my laptop), it develops a malware issue. What's the deal?

My first set of logs is attached.

Rootkit Found Was (Re: Kiwee Toolbar Found...)

I put the Root Repeal log with this message because I included a screen capture of it. In the lower lefthand corner of the window you will see I have circled that the program found 7 issues. I circled this because the log report does not indicate this.

Thank you again for all your help. I'm damned near banging my head against the wall.

Well you certainly didn't get infected by us or our tools ;)

I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

The rootkit that was reported is nothing to worry about because you do not boot from the drive it said it was hooked into.

Quite frankly I do not know what you are referring to regarding the kiwi toolbar. Firstly it is not malware, secondly, it does not even exist on your machine according to the logs, and you have been told this in the past.

I see you had a thread quite recently with Chaslang, and he told you that your logs were clean. That fact still stands, as I have reviewed the logs and am seeing nothing much to do.

Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 19

Did you set the below proxy?

If not then please include it in our fixables.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

No site should be placed into your TZ.

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

FYI: Any non malware-related issues you are having will have to be resolved in the software forum as Chaslang also suggested to you.

That was from a previous recent thread with TimW ( Kiwee Toolbar Found on Machine That's Been Off for Weeks ) . These two new messages were incorrectly posted in that thread instead of a new thread being started. I spun off the two new messages into a new thread and changed the title to: firewall states "new network found"

Not every problem that occurs on a PC is malware! ;)

:confused TimW told me in that very thread that if I had anymore probs to go ahead and post to the same thread but if it was more than 2 weeks later to please post a new set of logs...so that's what I did!

You see what happened, here. This person had no idea what was going on. Had it been left where it was, Tim would've remembered the situation and understood. I've worked with him many times before, and he knows me and my mental disability. I worry that anyone else here will be disrespectful.

I honestly have no idea. I was working for an online transcription company until August of last year. They messed around with my host/server/what-have-you settings all the time, setting me up on various VPNs and DictaPhone voice/data servers when I was put on new accounts.

I did this, as well as the other related MS addresses that should be listed there, at the instruction of MS because I couldn't access Microsoft Update. I did what I was told to do.

Let me know what you think about that proxy situation, and then I'll proceed with your resultant instructions if there is any change.

    Thanks,

Yes you are correct that Tim said something about requiring new logs after 2 weeks had passed; however, what Tim really meant was if it was the same problem that reoccurred. This has nothing to do with what was in the previous thread and he made that statement over a month ago.

Your issue with a new network being found by your firewall software should have been posted in the Networking or even Software Forum.

The issue of concern, once I'd done the XP Cleaning Procedure was the rootkit that was found on my WD hard drive. That's malware, is it not? That's the only reason I'm here. I know how choosy you guys are about what goes where.

It would be if it were real but it is not real. Some external devices and even some hard disk are partitioned using non-standard information and can make it look like a problem with the master boot record. If an attempt was made to fix this using a standard Windows boot record, it could potentially make your external device unusable. This same detection was in your previous logs posted in the thread with Tim and he also ignored it as we are.

Do you have a Windows installation installed on this drive that you are going to boot from? If not, it is also a non-issue.
