There is probably a thread somewhere about this, but in my searching I can't find one.

I am working on an a1410 HP Pavilion with Asus A8N-LA motherboard. My friend after an HP update that upgraded the BIOS, now has crazy fast fans. When the pc is just sitting there or using the internet, all of a sudden the CPU bolts into high gear and the fans starting running like a jet engine.

Have downloaded the bios from the HP site, flash bios with this download to no avail.

Does anyone know of any place to get old version of BIOS?
Have tried reset with CMOS battery, Motherboard jumpers. Still has the new version. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

The noise is annoying and my friend can't stand to use the pc because of the fan noise.

Checked the CPU temp and it is normal 68º, but fans are spinning out of control.
    Thanks in advance.

    68 C or F?

if 68 C it's to hot. I would blow all the durst out of it if you haven't already.

    Clean as a whistle.
First thing was to clean every orifice.
Under the f1 setup screen>advanced>hardware> tab
    67º c and 150ºf
    Is that too hot?

The fan just speeds up the slows then speeds then slows.
It did not do this prior to BIOS update from HP, a year and half ago.

    Idle that's WAY to hot

    should be around 40c idle

What is the RPM of the cpu fan?

    Varies from 4800 - 5200.
Right now it is full gale force and has been for about an hour. So loud I can here it from the other room.

Is the heat-sink clean and free of dust?

Clean as can be, with new compound.

CoreTemp is running now. Temp is 35 c.
TaskMgr show CPU spiking every few seconds. When it does fans jumps into high gear.
Ran BIOS update again, and rebooted.
    SP3 is installing now.

    35c is much much better

it seems like a bios issue

Yes that is what I indicated from the start. All this started after an HP BIOS update.
Wish there was some way to go back to older version. Oh Well.

I guess it is time for my friend to buy a new pc.

Not necessarily. Before jumping in and recommending a new PC, I suggest you recommend to your friend to purchase an inexpensive laptop cooling pad. At least with one of these the laptop can be cooled when on a desk, and they are a lot cheaper than a new laptop and may just solve your problem.

That might be a good idea if it was a laptop.
I thought I had mentioned it is a HP 1410 desktop.

I have today downloaded a BIOS update from ASUS, as that what the MB says that it is. THe hp site says that it is an AWARD BIOS on an Asus A8N-E MB. I flashed the BIOS with this download and it still has the fan running full speed. When I check the temp with CoreTemp it is 45 c or less and the Process explorer says that the CPU is spiking at 100% every other second.

Not sure what to try next. I was going to do a full system restore/recovery from the disk, but if it will not fix the fan issue it is hardly worth my time.

More suggestions are welcome, until tomorrow night. As I will give it back to my friend as it is. She can get some ear plugs for when she uses it.

I'm not sure if this will be at all useful. Maybe install speedfan

and see if you can gain control of the fan.

I'd also email HP support and report the problem with the newest BIOS. Ask if you can be sent the BIOS that was working properly. They might email you a link to grab the needed BIOS.
