I will get better sites one day, but damn. I am not a very good shot with a rifle, and this was my first time shooting the Smith and Wesson M&P-15. Did some site adjustment, need to find a 100 yard range, the indoor one is only 25 yards, bit short for a rifle.

Zero jams, zero problems. Gun just shoots. Nothing like cranking out a bunch of bullets to make me feel better. :-D :guns

To put the picture into perspective, if I center the bullseye on my nose, the highest round would be in my forehead.

I plan on a much tighter group in the future. On another target, I did 5 rapid fire shots. 3.25" group. :drool

If that is a 25 yard grouping, every single one would still be a hit out to about 250-300 yards. Possibly a little farther.

  6. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Would be an approximate 25 yard group. The indoor range is 25 yards, I don't run the target all the way out. Close to 25 yards. Unless you want to come measure it... :-D

I used to laugh at heatshields on guns. Damn, this one has a need for one. ;)

Upgraded my ancient hearing protectors to Remington 30DB headgear, with some ear plugs as well.

Shotgun jammed, epic fail, so now this is my go to gun. Feel pretty confident with it.

    What is the caliber?

  8. Fred_G

5.56 NATO. Shooting mainly .223 rounds because they are cheaper.

Looks and probably shoots like the M-16 I used in the infantry.

Out of curiosity, what caliber was the M-16? 5.56 or 7.62...

  13. hrlow2

    hrlow2 MajorGeek

5.56. .223 cal. 20 rounds in less than 4 seconds in full auto mode.

I have got to go to one of the gun shows where you can shoot a full auto gun. :-D

I am really impressed with the accuracy of this gun. I am more of a handgun, shotgun shooter. I got 5 shots off in around 7 seconds. Not bad for a nooblet. Especially with a 3.5" group. Really want better sites for it, the rear site is just an iron ring. Will get some later.

Mine has 30 round mags. :-D

If you ever do get to fire one on full auto, remember: Pulls from lower left to upper right.

The only problem with the M16 was that the round was so small and travelled at such speed it had no stopping power, wheras the the 7.62 self loading rifle would stop any thing including a truck. (if you wanted to stop one)

Yeah, I was looking for a 7.62 or .308, but the ammo is just too expensive for it. Maybe Santa will bring me another assault rifle. :-D

I priced out a Wilson Combat 6.8 SPC yesterday and got some sticker shock going on. But I still might buy one.

Very interesting. This it? http://www.wilsoncombat.com/68project.asp I wonder if they make an upper that will fit on my AR-15 lower.

  24. Burning_Monkey

    Burning_Monkey MajorGeek

that is the very one and yes they make an upper to fit your lower.

it is a bit pricey too :-D

I have seriously thought about just buying a stock M-4 and then kitting it up to what I want, but that ends up being more expensive.

  25. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Call me stupid, but I could not find an upper for my gun. Help a nooblet out with a link for an upper for a S&W M&P-15?

  26. Burning_Monkey

    Burning_Monkey MajorGeek

That M&P use AR parts or is it completely it's own weapon?

If it can use AR Uppers the info is buried on that same page, it you have to have S&W special parts, you might be out of luck. (a quick search of a couple of other forums leads me to believe that the SW M&P uses standard AR15 parts so you might be able to swap uppers)

    http://www.wilsoncombat.com/68project.asp

Just do a search for "Upper" with out the quotes and it will give you the prices and model numbers for uppers

Yes, it uses AR parts. M&P is Smith's 'Military and Police' line of rifles and handguns. That is a nice looking weapon though.

You aren't the first person to say that, Fred. I tend to look at it as I like really high quality. Which is not to say your M&P 15 isn't high quality, it's just the difference between factory made and custom or small lot made.

I love this, 60+ rounds, at 25 yards, shot from the shoulder, no bench rest. If I center the bulls eye on my nose, only 4 are not hits. Center body, they are all hits, one clip was fired as fast as I could. I love this fooking gun! :-D:-D

My friend and I just recently found his grandpa's old German Karabiner 98 Kurz...that thing is a beast, really fun to shoot. It's one of the original nazi Karabiners, all the original markings are still on it.

Fred: sweet groups!!! i looked at a couple of rifles similar after the other thread and the sticker shock knocked me outta the race :cry:cry:cry just too rich for my blood. on the other hand, my new 1911s? grouping around 3.5 inches at 25 to 30 yards! and since i can't get the really big nice kit like your rifle i've gotten into reloading :-D loads of fun, bad pun intended :major

  35. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Come on, I usually have a grin on my face when I lay out the bullets to load the clips. Not to mention how you feel after blasting 100 or more bullets down the range in a couple of mins... :-D

Dude, I want pictures of that posted!

The 1911 is probably my second favorite handgun. They are a classic! And 3.5" groups, hell, that is good at 10 yards! The AR platform is not cheap, you can get them new for $800 for some models. You might look at used guns, but they can be addictive.

The bad part is the add ons. I want a extended lower trigger guard, and a Trijicon front site. Already got the Houge Mono grip and a few mags. And a case....

Ammo is pretty reasonable, have found FMJ's for $36 per hundred, and Soft Points for $34 per hundred. And sometimes FMJ's in the $20 per hundred rounds.

How much cheaper is reloading? I am thinking about that as well.

You should have seen us at the range last Sunday. 3 guys, one 9mm pistol, 2 .40 pistols, 2 12 guage shotguns, 2 AR-15's, and a Ruger 10/22 .22 cal with 50 round clips. 3 guys with Sh.. eating grins on our faces. :-D

Geez, is funny but damn, learn to shoot. Very dangerous how they are not using proper form. Dropping loaded weapons? I would hope my local range would kick me out if I did that. Am curious what they are shooting.

    Funny link, thanks. ;)

Yeah I didnt want to add to the funny picture and ruin my laughter. But I agree those people aiming and shooting at a range in the USA Ive been to they'd take the gun away and tell you to get the hell away. Gun Ranges Ive been to around here.. take it pretty serious and I agree.. Always point gun down range never towards people or crowd.. but 1st time warned.. second boot out.. but here its get the hell out!

I am all about learning, but those folks have no reason being on the range firring live ammo.

I love to shoot, but I don't like the idea of an errant round from the next lane hitting me.... :-D

from what i can find that round is the .577 t-rex. monster round, comparable to the 600 nitro. no wonder it kicks like mule. i wanna shoot one!!!!!!!!

Fred: costs? alot. well, components not so much. $4 box of large pistol primers (100), hornady xtp 200 grn $22 (100), powder less than a tenth of a &30 bottle. so 100 rounds cost me 28-29 bucks? trying to remember if i left anything out, but i don't think so. gets cheaper the more bulk ya buy (left over brass from factory rounds, don't know how much 100 of them would cost) 45 acp all. box of 50 federal fmjs is $16, hornady xtps are jhps, which factory are around 30-40 dollars per 50 round box.

I don't even have to go to a range, just out my back door. it has either been raining (like it will be this weekend :cry ) or I have been super busy with helping out on the farm.

Interesting. I can get .40 FMJ hollow points for around $12 for 50. The .223 rounds usually run around $30 or so per hundred. Bought reloaded soft points I am going to try Sunday. Now that I think about it, the .40's are factory reloads also. They shoot great, no issues.

As long as I can do it slightly cheaper, I would like to get into reloading soon, I like the idea of custom ammo.

Oh, got my Trijicon sights ordered. :-D
