    Please help!
I've got 2 issues: 1) Yahoo browser redirecting in Explorer when doing a search (although clicking on links in Yahoo news seem to be okay) and giving you random sites. Sometimes the search gives you a "genuine" looking list but when you click it's somewhere else or an error page, and when you click on the backpage the search page looks different and the web addresses look random. This has been since earlier this week when I think I mistakenly clicked on something on a webpage.

    2) HelpAssistant issue: So glad I found this forum, because the there were "HelpAssistant" threads. About a month or so, there was strange behavior -- computer suddenly restarting/saying it needed to shut down and restart -- but just thought it was being annoying. Then I noticed a "HelpAssistant" folder when doing the usual computer clean up. The Internet Explorer cache and temp file folder seemed unusually big, so they were deleted. But then 2 more HelpAssistant folders were created.

I have gone through the Malware Removal Guide (and hopefully did it correctly - not sure about MgTools). I also did the GooredFix and HelpAssistant fix.
    Thank you very much.

    1. Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 18

    2. What can you tell me about these?
    3. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    ucinaj
    Cdtbiu
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\oercrui.sys
    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant.MAIN-1.000
    C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant
    C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant.MAIN-1
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\tmp00002642
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\tmp00004731

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. You already have this downloaded and have run it but I suspect you did not run it as per all of the instructions:

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

    5. Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    6. Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    7. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the NEW log from HelpAsst/HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe.

    Wow! That was so quick!
Sorry about not doing the HelpAssistant correctly. :-o Hopefully I got it this time around. Thanks for your patience.

    1) Java 18 deleted
    2) these are Alyac (virus scan) and Alzip (file compression)
    3) ComboFix attached
    4) HelpAssistant: ran it and it said "HelpAssistant Profile not found" > "tool has completed" new log attached
    5) only current day files present
    6) Java 20 installed

Thank you again for your help.

Do you have your XP CD?

Do you mean the "reinstallation" CD that came with the computer?

Also, is it okay to use a flash drive and back-up CDs made before the cleanup if the virus scan and spyware scan say that they're clean?

    Thanks!

No, nothing to be worried about. Let's do this now:

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    That's a relief!
    Here are avenger and MGlogs.
Do you think that it's finally clean now? And is it safe to use flash drive and back-up CDs made before the cleanup (the virus scan/spyware scan say that there's nothing found).

There's also this big "HP_WebRelease" folder (~986mb) in C:Temp. It might be leftover from when someone cancelled a HP printer installation (there's no HP device installed on this computer now). Do you think it's safe to delete it?

Thank you so much for your time and help!
    :)

    Yes :)

Yes, and to check your flashdrive you could even do this:

For the external Hard Drive and a USB stick.

Insert your flash drive before we begin. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the flash drive until Windows detects it to bypass the autorun feature. This will keep the autorun.inf from executing automatically.

Please have all your removable storage devices ready for disinfection.

Download Flash Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop.

    • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
    • Your desktop and icons may disappear. This is normal.
    • It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.
    • Follow any prompts that may appear.
    • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
    • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • There will be no GUI interface or log file produced.
    • Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.
In most cases anything in a temp folder is safe to delete. And considering you do not have an HP printer now, I would say go ahead and delete it if you want, although it would not cause any harm if you didn't.

    Most welcome :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you for your quick and very helpful reply!

Sorry about this, but just one more thing... I was about to do the final steps when I noticed a folder called "HelpAsst_backup" (the location is C:\HelpAsst_backup )

It looked suspicious so I did a quick Super Antispyware scan of the folder only and it flagged a couple of things... Log attached.

Can this folder be deleted? The contents look like weird duplicates of other user files (like the previous Help Asst folders).

    Thanks so much again. :)

Nothing to worry about, it's from the tool we used, you can delete this too if it still exists:
