Stephen Hawkins on Aliens

Every morning I check my email and whatever news is going on, a couple of weeks ago, maybe last week Stephen Hawkins made a statement (I think it was an extract from some documentary he was doing) saying that he's pretty sure Aliens will not be friendly if they turn up, we should expect less of E.T. and more Independence Day.
He also said we should not try to make contact with Aliens for this exact reason.

NASA have just replied with, "Too late, we've already sent several messages"

While this is all very interesting and baring in mind I respect the hell out of Mr.Hawkins and his enormous brain, the notion of Aliens being hostile has been around since 1947 and I fail to notice why this is such a major revelation.

    Odd really isn't it.

    That is all.

I think the Discovery channel is putting a slight spin on things to get more folks to watch tonight.;) I think all he's saying is don't assume that they'll be a benevolent and amicable bunch. They might notice us and think, hmm a world wide infestation of humanoids in a resource depleted planet. Let's get on with fumigating this place so we can come back later to a proper planet.:-D We'll also get rid of that infuriating Lucy who beamed us the nonsensical contact info 50 years ago.

Most likely, we are considered so small and out of the way planet, and Homo-Sapiens so primitive and insignificant, (they haven't even come close to leaving their solar system yet. That, as fantastic as we like to think we are, we are of little or no interest to super-sentient beings. It would be like us trying to have diplomacy with an Earth Worm.

Hawking is wrong and some of his statements are stupid-

What's astounding to me as physics laymen is listening to a physicist let his imagination getting the better of him while ignoring the physics. If they have massive ships that can traverse galaxies then they have a power source and means of propulsion that makes all other 'resources' fade into insignificance, food, water, natural resources ect. ect. if you have an abundance of power all of these can be produced from any of the building blocks found abundantly in the universe,if we found an abundance power source tomorrow water, food, starvation all become a thing of the past and there be no reason to leave our planet and neither would the aliens.

What are they gonna come here for?Our oil? for their gas guzzling SUV space ship?:-D There are thousands of life supporting planets similar to ours and much closer if they wanted somewhere to live but again if you have an abundance of power and technology you can make any planet your home.

I think Hawking as just been to see Avatar,we traversed the galaxy in huge ships that can travel at the speed of light then jump out of the ships and attack the aliens with machine guns and C4 :-D for the all important natural resource unobtainium . rolleyes

LOL Rikky, maybe Hawking's working on a hard sci-fi novel or screenplay!:-D Just don't take those few words out of context is all I'm saying. Michio Kaku said much the same thing on Larry King Live on Friday to which the whole hour(minus the 25 mins. of ads :banghead) was devoted to.

I'll watch it because it's Hawking, because it's about space and because it's about aliens. Now that's my cuppa!;)

Ah, Hawkings was just scared by that 1950's movie where the aliens come to earth and give the leaders a book called "How to serve mankind" and just as a whole crap load of people got on board their space crafts, mankind translated the book and realized it was a cook book!! :-D:-D

It's all bollocks. I've come to my own personal conclusion that extraterrestrial tourists are as likely to land as hard arsed tooled up Predator type beings.
The point being we can only guess at what could arrive on earth from α Ursa Majoris 5.
I could say, "we really shouldn't try to make contact with alien life forms as they might head to earth and take some nice photos of Sydney Opera House." It carries as much weight as Prof Hawking's argument.
It also makes as much sense as Prof Hawking's argument. None. :)

Don't ya just hate that, Augie! They promised to show that here as well, but had some crappy repeat on meteor disasters instead. Disco Channel sucks at times! :mad

It was on here, and it was okay, but this has always been an interest of mine and I can't say I walked away with any "wows".
My biggest beef is the frequency and duration of the commercials on Discovery! Any of the cable stations for that matter, 5 minute commercials, gets rather tiring. :wave:wave

Hmmmph! 5 minute ads?!!!!! What was the total minutes for the program by your estimation? We liomit the ad time to 12 minutes/hour. One of the reasons why the McKenzie Brothers roflmao was made, to fill up 2 minutes of ad time time when the states were broadcasting hockey.

How could Stephen Hawking not believe in Aliens or that they are friendly. They seemed friendly enough when playing poker on the holodeck with Einstein, Newton and Lt. Commander Data.

Of course there's always the hitchhikers guide possibility...

"They crossed vast reaches of space in a journey lasting thousands of years before reaching their target where they attacked the first planet they encountered, Earth. Due to a terrible miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was swallowed by a small dog. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy states that this sort of thing happens all the time."

I have the ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Even though I am a religious person, I found it hilariously funny.

I believe, that they exist not that they're a danger. :confused

As for Discovery, they're giving Sarah Palin a show, to me they've lost any credibility. :(

lol I was reading TIME magazine last night and she was on the list of the 100 most influential people in the world. I could not freakin believe it. The article was praising her for absolutely nothing except for being a publicity slut. Was so sad to read kinda made me not wanna renew my subscription.

So to you two last posters, Sara Palin is just another dumb beauty queen?

Beyond what you have read on the blogs, have you delved any deeper into what she actually has accomplished for her state?

One of the big questions regarding civilisations and technology is whether a civilisation becomes socially adept before they become technologically advanced.During the cold war it could be argued that we came within a bugs genitals to destroying ourselves but did we?The way he universe has been designed you have to discover electrons and radio waves before you know what's inside the atom and hence a nuclear weapon so it seems obvious to me the universe is set up in favour of civilisation, you have to learn to communicate before you can wipe each other out.

But even more obvious to me is how socially advanced a civilisation has to be before they can journey between the stars. You can't have science programs or space programs without schools, you can't have schools without advanced social practices and you can't have any of that until a species begins to put what's good for the group ahead of what's good for the goose.

If you think how afar we have come socially in the last one hundred years imagine how far we will have come in the next Five hundred if we begin to explore the stars?

I think what they are trying to convey is how technologically advanced and alien race would be compared to ours which I agree with but they aren't looking at the whole picture, especially how a technologically advanced civilisation gets to become that way,not with big brains but by looking after each other and working together.

Not really because it doesn't concern me. What concerns me is her bid to become President of the United States which I do not believe she is qualified to be. No doubt in my mind she will be running again but I think Americans as a whole would never let her get elected. Again this is my personal opinion. If you read the article then you would understand my previous comment. Nothing was mentioned about what she has accomplished it was all about praising her for becoming the media's crush.

but anyway back to the topic at hand... Aliens I definitely believe in and I believe they do have the capabilities to be violent in nature if provoked or wanted something we have.

Which one's just out of curiosity?

As for her getting elected, she's not electable. I don't think she will run either, because like Rush says "pay cut" comes to mind. lol

I wasn't happy about that either -__- regarding the Nobel Peace Prize anyway.

As far as his current status, he was and is getting a lot of unnecessary attention based on the fact he is an African American president such as Palin did for being a women but even more so. I didn't vote for him in the primary either. I am not saying Palin is a terrible person I would prolly invite her into my bed if she'd let me for some fun but I'd never vote for her.

Back on track though we could easily start a new thread on that but political and religious debates tend to get nasty around here so I am going to stay outta it now lol
