Ready to burn computer! DVD not working!

    :-oTrying to burn avi hard drive files to dvd-r discs.Have dell dimension 4600c with dvd/cd-rw (D:) and dvd drive (J:) drive. Was able to burn cd-r discs but have tried several free burners and get replies like - insert disc (it already is) and no dvd writer. These same programs burn cd-r's and I can't figure out why they won't burn dvd-r's. Is the Dell hardware capable of burning the dvd's with the free software or am I missing something. I am a novice but I feel it must be something simple that I am overlooking.

    There are 2 devices listed in "my computer"-(a) HL-DT-ST RW/dvd gcc 424 in and (b) OLKPY IF 4 pe zi scsi cd rom device. I have no idea what these mean.
    Do I have the needed hardware to burn dvd's or do I need something else?

    What do the above drives (D:) and (J:) mean? What are they etc?

    Not familiar with the nomenclature of the drive, but I got my free DVD burner software from filehippo.com . Its cd burner XP, give it a whirl and let us know.

    Hi

    Asset tags lists a CD burner (read and write) and DVD rom (read only) drive as plodr had mentioned in your other thread, would have to grab yourself a CD/DVD RW IDE drive, they are not that expensive these days.
