well i didnt even have a browser open when 3 versions of that fake antivirus software popped up.

so i went through all the steps and here are the logs.

alot of the problems have been fixed that is for sure, i am now mainly worried about "MBR Rootkit Detected!" on both partitions i noticed while running rootrepealer. my second worry is this HelpAssistant file under documents and settings. someone said it was the user account but its not visible under users in the control panel so i cant turn it off if it is even on. ALOT of the infected files came from that folder.

next post will have last log files.

i should also mention that i had previously run MBAM before i found this site and took the steps. if you want that log, for whatever reason, just say so and i'll upload it. i ran one quick scan then a full scan.

Ignore the writing on my first post, I tried to edit it for grammar and clarity but I was too late. Here is the much more readable version:

Well, I didn't even have a browser open when three versions of that fake antivirus/antimalware software popped up. The kind that won't allow you to open any programs or visit any websites except their own to trick you into paying them. So, before I found this site, I ran hijack this and deleted a bunch of entries they had made, and then I ran through MBAM twice.

Once I found this site, I ran through all the steps in the READ & RUN ME FIRST thread.

Alot of the problems that it caused have been fixed (for instance google chrome was completely broken and now it works fine). However, I am definitely worried about the "MBR Rootkit Detected!" on both partitions message I noticed while running RootRepealer. My second most worry is this "HelpAssistant" folder in C:\Documents and Settings\. It seems to be almost a clone of my user folder. I read that it was a separate user account and that it's main purpose is for someone to do the remote assistance thing but it was never there before and I don't ever want remote assistance. So, I would like to find a way to disable that, and I would like to delete the entire folder but I'm not sure if it will serve some purpose to you guys. By the way, a very large portion of the infected files came from that folder.

    Next post will have MGLogs.zip.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    mbr -f

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

    helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

No matter what happens with the above, attach the above logs and then immediately continue with the below in normal boot mode!

    • * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
      * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
      * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
      * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
      Code:
      KILLALL::
      File::
      C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$$$dq3e
      C:\WINDOWS\Temp\$67we.$
      Folder::
      C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant

      * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
      * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
      * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
      * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
      * Follow the prompts.
      * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
      * I will ask for this log below

      Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
    • After reboot run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

So, I downloaded HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe, and ran it. It located the HelpAssistant folder and did something to it. Then it found an infection in the mbr and prompted me to type y and enter to fix it, so I did. However it's been sitting at "checking mbr" in the title and "please wait" in the window for about two and a half hours now. I'm not sure if this is to be expected or not. Should I close it and try again? (im posting from a different computer)

Close it or restart your computer ( would like you to do the ComboFIx I gave you first though ) and attach the new logs.

Ok, I cant close the helpasst_mebroot_fix.exe window. So, I followed the combofix instructions with the window open and it never did anything beyond the loading bar. Should I restart and try again?

OK, I was forced to reboot because the computer froze. So, I re-ran combofix with CFscript.txt by dropping it on top as instructed, followed the prompts, and here are the logs. Remember that helpasst_mebroot_fix.exe was frozen and I'm pretty sure that is what was keeping combofix from running, but here is the log it produced anyway. I then ran GetLogs.bat as instructed. All logs are attached.

Here is something weird; opening mirc seems to crash the computer within a few minutes everytime! My problem with searches being redirected seems to have been fixed, but I'm not sure. Also, my google chrome theme is gone, my weather application has disappeared (it was called moxyweather), and everything is slightly sluggish as compared to normal. One thing that appears to have been fixed is that the disk manager is now showing my partitions again. Before disk manager was totally blank as if there were no disks installed.

edit: Forgot to mention that combofix restarted my computer as well.

I don't know what was going on ( you didn't try running both at the same time, did you?), but regardless, it worked. Your logs are clean. :)

As to your other issues, I suggest you post HERE to help you resolve them.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

No, I didn't try to run them at the same time. I only tried to run combo fix after I couldn't close that window that'd been open for so many hours.

All the symptoms seem to be gone. Thanks alot for the help. I'm going to do this last step and hope that everything is completely clean. Do you think I will ever be able to trust this computer with sensitive passwords again?

Oh, also is it safe to run cccleaner's registry check and delete any problems it finds?

Yes. Just remember that you should always use a different computer to change any online passwords.
Indeed, CCleaner's registry check is very good though you should always make the backup when prompted.

You are most welcome.....safe surfing. :)

Sorry, I have one final follow-up question. I noticed C:\ has a few new files that I believe were created during the clean up process, and I was wondering if I could delete them.

    They are:
    devicetable.txt
    Boot.bak
    cmldr (no file extension)
    HelpAsst_backup (file folder)
    MSOCache (file folder)
    img2-001.raw

devicetable.txt --> no idea, but being a txt file, you can probably safely delete it.
HelpAsst_backup (file folder) --> you can definitely delete that folder.
    img2-001.raw --no idea.
    Leave the rest.
