MBR Rootkit and Mirar remnants

Hi. I'm so grateful that there are people like you taking time to address the issues of the somewhat "less clueful" such as myself.

My issues involve Mirar in my add-remove programs list, a presumably orphan Type Lib Ref that CCleaner thinks it has deleted but which keeps showing up, and MBR Rootkit detected in C and D drives during a RootRepeal scan.

About two weeks ago our browser got hijacked, and, when I was resetting everything through the "manage add-ons" tool, the Mirar toolbar wanted to come along for the ride. I deleted it from the add-ons, and temporarily everything seemed to have returned to normal. But I discovered that things were running slower, popups were--well--popping up, and sometimes the internet connection would freeze up. A few Norton scans reduced the number of incidents, but things still weren't perfect.

That's when I discovered Mirar in my add-remove programs list, although the uninstall tool (which I presume belongs to Mirar, and they don't want me to uninstall in the first place) says it can't find Mirar on my system.

So I decided to run CCleaner, including the registry cleaner. But one entry, which the registry cleaner keeps telling me it has deleted, keeps showing up on the next subsequent scan. I don't know if it's related to Mirar--or if it's even a problem at all--but its persistence is puzzling. The line reads:

    Missing Type Lib Reference
    Data: IWinPwdSvc-{BD726167-A7B6-48d7-BC7F-165855EDF956}
    Reg Key: HKCR\Interface\{C0282E26-E060-44c9-B0FF-1AC71180D653}

I then decided to consult you folks, and first followed the instructions in the READ ME FIRST post. That's when I discovered, during the RootRepeal scan, the message that, in Volume C:\ and Volume D:\, "MBR Rootkit detected!" All the other sectors (1 through 62 in both C and D) said "sector mismatch" (huh?).

By the way, I ended up running MGtools from the desktop because the computer said only the administrator was authorized to create a C:\ file, however the user name I was using is also the administrator, so, again, "huh?". Oh, well.

I'm attaching the first four logs as per the READ ME FIRST post, and will attach the fifth log to a second post.

Thank you for whatever help you can provide and for the time you spend doing this stuff for all of us.

By the way, I had to ru

    Your logs are clean.

You don't have an MBR infection so ignore what RootRepeal is saying.

CCleaner is not a malware detection tool and just because it is showing you a registry key, does not mean you should remove it. In fact if you read our instructions again in the READ & RUN ME, we specifically tell you not to run the registry cleaner ( the Issues button). We only requested that you clean temporary files and DO NOT recommend registry cleaning.

The key you are mentioning is likely part of Symantec or another security program that you have installed and it you removed it or anything else related to it, you may have to reinstall Symantec.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you so much. I guess I'm stuck having Mirar in my add-delete programs list, since there seems to be no way to remove it, but at least I know now that, as with the RootRepeal report, the scary implication is invalid.

Vis a vis the registry cleaner, I ran that before I came to your site. I was hoping that if the Mirar title in the programs list was actually an orphan, the reg cleaner might remove it, but no such luck. I gather you don't recommend registry cleaning at any time.

Thanks again, from another happy "customer".

No! The below should be able to remove it unless the registry key is locked.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Yea, I received a success message, and yes, Mirar has disappeared from my add-remove programs list. Thanks again.
