So a while back, my monitor would go black, with a “no signal” message, but would come back. It did not happen much, so I didn't think much of it.

Then, then, a couple of days ago, I was streaming a video, and lost internet. It came back after reboot. This happened a couple of times. Then, my screen would lock up, but mouse still moves. It is really random as to when it happens, but generally (75% of the time) everything will eventually lock up. Nothing works...cant click on anything, get task manager, etc...so have to reboot.

A couple of times upon startup I got a message “Overclocking Failed! Please enter setup to reconfigure your system.” I reset to default, though I have never overclocked this PC before.

I checked all fans, and gave a thorough cleaning.
    I have run a thorough Prime95 and 10 passes of Memtest86+ v4.10. No problems.
    Using AIDA32, I noted these:
    Motherboard temp: 36-38C
    processor: 1.3V
CPU core: 2.64V (have seen it roam from 2.4 – 2.9, generally at 2.6)
    CPU Aux: 3.36V
    +3.3V: 3.31V
    +5V: 5.54V
    +12V: 9.91V
    -12V: -11.85V
    -5V: -3.97V

concerned about a couple voltages, I changed supplies. No difference.

    p/s is a 600W coolmaster
    MB is ASUS P5K
processor is intel core 2cpu6600 @2.4G
    graphics card: Radeon HD 2900XT

my initial gut was a graphics card problem, as it seems to be worse when opening a few apps. Perhaps it is Malware that avg is not picking up.

I have had this PC for 4-5 year, trouble free. Any thoughts?

    thanks

what are the odds this is simply the cmos battery?

Seems as though this is your problem, your PSU is not supplying sufficient power to the 12v rail. Please enter BIOS, and check the voltages from there, (just to make sure).

I suggest you get a new PSU, The best for you would be a Corsair TX650, or anything higher wattage in the Corsair range if you are planning on some hardcore upgrades within the next year or two.

I have already changed PSU with no effect.

    the rail/neg 12 is what prompted a psu change for me. I entered bios, and it says vcore = 1.312, 3.3 = 3.296, 5 = 5.11, 12 = 11.760. there is no - readings in there.

    FYI

as I was starting to really dig, I said, mehhh...I am due for a fresh windows install as it has been running a while now anyways. Worth a shot right. seems to have worked. must have been a new malware not getting picked up or something. No idea where I would have picked it up. Never noticed it in hijack or anything. weird

all good though...got rid of a bunch of software I don't need, PC is faster, no longer running avg (wasnt happy with it anymore, using Avira (seems good))

I would like to point out that I have never seen a program that produces the correct viltage readings for a PSU. On my home desktop my -12V is registered as being at -16.5V but when I tested with a multimeter it was dead on -12.

So do not trust these programs for reliable readings.

thanks collins. That is kinda what I was thinking...do you think that now that I have a "baseline" so to speak it could be trusted in the future?
