Poll: Talking geek with your peers

Out of curiosity, how comfortable is everyone here with talking "geek" with their peers? For example, are you fine with raving about how awesome or bad Bad Company 2 was to your buddies? How about when it comes to more technical stuff like modding your console? How about really technical stuff like compiling code with PYTHON?

    - Very Comfortable
    - Somewhat Comfortable
    - Somewhat Uncomfortable
    - Very Uncomfortable
    - No interest in talking geek with peers

    Further explanation is welcomed.

Bwahahahaha! All my friends eyes glaze over when I talk geek. Like gushing profusely about the i7's!:-D I just don't bother anymore, it has nothing to do with being comfortable or not, they're just not into it just like I shut my brain when they're talkin' cars. Same difference.;)

Have you ever thought about getting them "into it" like you are so that you COULD talk about that stuff together though?

    Hi

Find it ok talking to my bosses with "geek" stuff, some of it they know ok but alot they dont about computing etc, kinda like when they talk to me about medical stuff, my eyes glaze over and I just smile and nod.

Friends dont mind at all as if I fix their PCs they are OK, but I do dumb it down alot unless in the company of other "geeky types" that dont mind the technical stuff, as your average user doesnt care for the technical explanations, so long as their PC or Software works.

    so

    Very Comfortable

No, never unless they ask and these are friends that I've had for a long long time and I'm not interested in trying to switch them, if at all even possible! Some folks like mechanics and others like electronics, that's just the way it is. Sometimes you'll find a grease monkey like Halo or MA that likes both. ;) If I really wanted to talk geek with like minded folks then I'd join a computer club and have some geeky friends there.:)

BTW, there's lot's of geeky things in a car these days from precision engineering to computers in cars.

I talk about what ever arises in conversation. Should someone mention something that pertains to PC's or games then I will move forward with the conversation because it's something that interests me and I can easily join in the conversation.

I have had 1 or 2 people call me a nerd or some such in a derogatory manner, to them I simply reply something along the lines of "How much money do you spend per year on having your PC fixed?" usually shuts them up pretty quickly lol

I speak my mind and am not embarrassed about my interests, if other people feel they have an issue with me speaking about these things, then the issue is theirs, not mine.

I'm not a real techie, just something I enjoy participating in and learning about.

But the people I talk tech to usually look at me intently and nod their heads ever so slightly, as to communicate they are "getting it".

Sometimes I'll ask if they understood what I was saying, the answer is inevitably "not really".

(But I already knew that. :-D)

It's kinda fun, in a sick way.
    :p:-D:-D:-D

My friends, for the most part, freely admit that they don't know about PCs or how things work.
I usually break it down into examples that they can understand.
1 had not defragged his drive since he got the machine. Didn't use the defragger because he didn't understand what it did. I used a deck of cards as an example.
Straight from the box, new fresh install.
Scatter on the floor(52 pickup) then put back together.(drive after several years use). Took him a while to find a certain named card.
Had him sort the deck into suits. (Windows style) Easier to find the card.
Then had him put each suit into numerical order. (third party style) Much easier to find any card needed.
After that, he defrags every 1st of the month on a schedule.

I tend to point out the difference between a Nerd and a Geek.

Nerds get beaten up in the playground and Geeks can turn your life to hell in 30 seconds :cool

Yep. Often Geeky - never Nerdy.:cool:major People say they don't comprehend, but then they always ask for more, so all's good in the end. :dood As more or less said, it's like when they talk Aussie Rules football, I listen, but my brain is really thinking, "W.T.H., 30 odd grown men fighting over a pigskin, and the ball aint even round!".:confused

My friends are geeks. That should be enough of an answer. :)

roflmao Actually, I don't have Australian Citizenship, just British and U.S. from my mom's side when we lived in that part of the globe, (well I haven't been told any different, so I'm assuming it's still valid). Re: Tech-talk:-Yeah, usually people want to know about tech stuff, but then don't really want take the effort to learn it - so whaddaya do, eh? -I'm good with regular chat, anyway.

@ Ned:- Well I have no idea how many guys make a football team over here. All I know is that there are a heap of dudes and someone nicks the pumpkin looking thing and all the other guys get really mad and beat each other up for it. And the goals are just posts in the ground. It is rather odd, i.m.o. ;)LOL

(Edit:- Okay, so apparently it's 18 guys per team. Still don't make a lick of sense to me.:-D)

My friend Carlos is the only friend I can talk geeky with. People look at us strange when they hear our convos but we have a blast. If I try to talk geeky with any other friend they just stare at me with a blank look or just smile and nod. :-D
